As some of you might know, we are flying off to Italy in the early hours of tomorrow morning. House is spotless, Maxie going to the kennels this afternoon, husband harrassed,, case still not fully packed, cant get use to the limitations on how much you can now take as hand luggage, and what can go in your case in the hold.
You are all such travelled ladies, and I wonder if you could give me any handy tips, and anything else that I might have forgotten.
I havent flown for five years, and all the security etc, has increased beyond all recognition, what do you carry in your handbag on the plane for instance?
I think next holiday is definitely the cottage in Devon.

Hi have a good trip ...don't carry any liquids more than 25ml (I think, I'll find out myself soon when I go away) in your bag. And definitely no tweezers and scissors etc . I got my manicure set confiscated on the way to the US a couple of years ago.

Hi Plasmo,
I'm going to Italy this week too!
In my handbag, as well as passport, tickets, driving licence and purse, I'll have tissues (never without them), a fan, and a flannel (for those tropical moments), wet wipes or anti bacterial gel, lip balm, emery board, pen, pencil, sudoku book, specs, packet of Werther's originals (to suck during take off) mp3 player and headphones, and of course, W&H!
Anything liquid, and this includes lip balms, I put in a clear plastic zipped bag, and have them out of my handbag to show the security folks.
Before I travel, I empty my bag completely, and put my nail clippers and leatherman tool into my suitcase, otherwise they might be confiscated. It also gives me a chance to get rid of the clutter!
I've found it best to take a big leather handbag without too many compartments. I used to think compartments were good, but now I can never remember where I've put anything so compartments take a lot ot time!
Have a fabulous trip. We're going to Lake Como, what about you?
Arrivederci, Sella

Hi Plasmo - if you are doing such a quick flight, my advice would be just pack everything into your luggage and that way you won't be giving away anything to the officials. Don't forget that anything sharp such as nail scissors and knitting needles (yes! I kid you not !) also need to be packed into your luggage. The limit on anything "liquid" is 100ml but things like hand cream will need to be packed into one of the little plastic bags which you can get at the airport. Even water is disallowed but guess what? You can spend your money buying another bottle once you have gone through security.
Passport? Airtickets? Credit Cards - need I ask?
Have a wonderful time and log in if you can for an update.

Girls,
What angels you are, thank you so much, all your tips were great. Does that mean that make up eg. lipstick, mascara, perfume, has to also go in the see through plastic container?

If in doubt, just put it all in the plastic bag Plasmo and that way you won't risk anything.

Yes anything even vaguely liquid has to go into the plastic bag. You can buy anything you like once you get past security so the duty free shops are making a mint! I have one large handbag, which I only use for going away, as it holds so much. Drives me mad as everything falls to the bottom of it but it does the trick. Make sure your airline will allow a handbag as well as a piece of hand luggage. I've never had that problem but I know people who have. You can always squeeze it into your hand luggage bag and get it out when through security.
However once through the farce they call security, everything will be "back to normal". Have a lovely time.

Hi Plasmo
I flew in and out of Gatwick a few weeks ago. All the messages above have given you all the info you need so I wont repeat it.
But what I wanted to say is dont worry to much about the changes in security. It does take a little longer but it's not too bad. The best thing to do is plan to arrive at the airport as soon as your check in opens, then you can get rid of your luggage and go through security into departures. Once you have done that you can go and find one of the restaurants and have a nice meal or drink and relax.
Have a wonderful holiday. I for one shall miss your posts while you are away.

Change of underwear, flat pumps shower proof jacket, infact anything you can think of that you might need if the bags go astray and take three days to get to you.
I hope it doesn't happen.
Have a great time

I always have
spare knickers. a pashmina - acts as a shawl if I get cold, or as a pillow a book paracetamol - OH invariably gets a stress headache a fan - planes can get too hot before take-off, and foreign airports can be too hot with no air-conditioning
