I fear I have missed the window of opportunity here!
I am now 50 and look - I think - the best I have for years and years - due to weight loss, improved fitness and lack of stress. We moved to the Ribble Valley and I went p/t.
I now want to wear pretty things instead of hiding in baggy grey and black and wear heels instead of sensible flats. I am off on holiday and want to take shorts and fun caps to wear. Can I ? Should I?
Well , actually I will - but how far can I go - what exactly will cause me to step over the boundary into mutton land?
Advice please!

I wouldn't worry too much about it if you feel good then show it off, be sexy and pretty and enjoy your holiday!
Go shopping with an honest, and good friend! Ask for advice in the shops you go to.
Look at helen Mirren she was in the paper recently in her bikini!
Good luck !

Zara have some really great new clothes in at the moment - pretty and not all a size 6! Brilliant sexy shoes too. Principles too for lovely holiday pretty dresses and separates...
Bet you can't wait although sometimes I always see things I love when I cant afford them, and when I am seriously looking, I cant find anything I like.

Same here Mollymandy, can never find anything when I have money to spend or need something for a wedding etc.
I think as we get older we got more confident in ourselves and especially if we manage to lose weight
Have a great time Janmac and enjoy shopping, lots of summer clothes and swimsuits are reduced at the moment !!

Ditch the baggy grey and flats immediately, do you hear! Of course you can wear pretty things and heels. Okay, maybe not mini skirts, even if you have the legs, the knees will give you away! Nothing wrong with shorts if you can wear them, just be sensible about the length. Caps are very sensible, unless it is me, who looks a complete wally in them! I think the older we get the more important it is to look good.

I bet you look fine the way you are. And good on you to feel more confident to try other styles. Unfortunately all the magazines are full of autumn wear so have a look at W&H spring/summer magazines if you can. That'll point you in the right direction.
Good luck and have a nice holiday

Why not book a personal shopper at Debenhams - its free. I did it once when desperate for a posh top and she came up with something I would never have taken off the rails and it looked fab. She can look at you with a professional eye. There are other shops with personal shoppers too. Even a couple of new things would make you feel great good luck faithfulone x

Well done on your life changes - good for you. Go for it. Go for what you feel comfortable with. Get the Gok and T&S books out of the library and have a flick through. See what suits your shape. I love Next, Wallis, Principles and the big stores (especially when the sales are on!) and having a mooch through the named stuff. I'm 50 next January and have joined a gym, going three times a week and I'm loving it. My shape has changed and I can't wait to reach my goal and go shopping for new stuff. Nothing is going to hold me back now.

Just been reading the funny posts on health and well being about embarrassing moments. Seeing your heading "when does lamb become mutton" I got all confused and Was gong to put "when puppies become dogs" Opps sorry.
On a more serious note, I have been 8 stone and almost 18, nearer the 8 then the 18 now! i would say, "where what ever you feel comfortable in, if you fell good then you'll look good"

I was trying on a bikini in a store. I thought it looked good but was concerned it might be a bit skimpy for someone of my age - I am a tanned and curvy size 12 but 52 so I asked the woman in the next cubicle what she thought - not skimpy enough came the reply so I bought it - everyone says how great it looks so glad I asked! Most of the time I think you know what's right but sometimes you need confirmation

List of personal no-no's
Too short skirts Too tight tops - I always, always check the back view Too much jewellery - I always wear earrings, watch and wedding and eternity rings and add one extra piece (cocktail ring, bracelet or necklace) Too tight trousers with vpl No smudgy lipstick or mascara blobs (I have a magnifying mirror I use for putting on makeup)
Trends / things I would wear A pair of flat sparkly ballet pumps (I have a gold pair with peep toe and pompom on front) Cocktail rings Long chain with a large heart or similar on it Something in purple (hot colour for this season) Converse style trainers with patterned socks and straight leg jeans at the weekend
And finally, get measured and ensure you are wearing right size and style of bra. Nothing says OL (old lady) more than a bolster type front.
Good luck and good for it!

Foxie - just had to say how much I agree with your list of dos and don'ts!
On the lipstick, I only use very light semi-gloss type textures now I'm older (but not too sparkly!), so less risk of smudges. Also think too bright colours and powdery textures best avoided. But still better to check in mirror as well. And I have my lashes dyed and - when I can afford it - permed, as I have a horror of any obvious-looking mascara - very aging.
I too love interesting ballet pumps, with sparkle etc. and the other trends you mention. My son (23) has tried to ban me wearing Converses (not sure why) but would certainly be up for trying a pair. Also fancy a cuff - I'm a necklace not a bracelet person but do like some of the styles around. Have also bought some purple, which I really like (a couple of tops).
My other 'rules' have to do with being large - wearing flattering V neck tops, etc - rather than age. But I don't stick to all the old original don'ts for larger women - have several stripy tops in this summer's nautical style for example.
And I'm 110% with you on the bra - that and hair cut and colour are the most important investments of all, in my opinion.

Thanks girls! Have slimmed down from a 14 to a 12 this year - a daily swim has definitely helped and defined my shape and helped me build up the tan slowly.
Agree, good bra and haircut/colour are essentials. I always think puff sleeves are a bad look for anyone over 12! As it's hot here we do have lots of ladies of a certain size and age(non Spanish) who dress in very tight vest tops (often without any bra ) and equally figure hugging shorts, usually in pastel colours. As we are not a beach resort, being about 30 mins from the sea, this is not a good look and doesn't go down too well with the locals. I never go into town in shorts, size 12 or not!

The older you get, I reckon the trick is to remember less is more, definitely don't look as though you're trying too hard ( although you are!), keep the look clean, simple fresh and modern. Agree completely re good bra and good haircut. I reckon then you can get away with most things (just not all at the same time!). Oh and stop believing everybody else is scrutinising every inch of your body. If you've got good legs and 50 year old knees, so what! An above the knee shift dress with tanned legs is a fab look. The rest of the world is getting on with it's own business and definitely not interested in the age of your knees!
