Hurricane Gustav
      #183880 - 01/09/2008 18:20

As Hurricane Gustav bares down on New Orleans, has anyone else ever had the misfortune to be caught in a Hurricane whilst on holiday or whilst living over seas?

I lived in Houston Texas in the 80's which is in the Gulf of Mexico. Hurricane Alicia hit Galveston on the Gulf Coast,Houston felt the effects of it, as its only about 30mins drive from Galveston. We were lucky enough to get away with just a few tiles off the roof and a fence panel down. But as we drove round the area afterwards some people had faired less well. When the eye went over it did become very quiet and eerie, and when it had passed over completely all the neighbours came out and sat on their driveways with a stiff drink in hand!Galveston Island (connected to the mainland by a bridge) didn't do so well, and the storm serge caused a fair bit of damage.

We have a cyclone season here and there is a special protocole to deal with it when we here the first warning everyone gets ready collecting supplies, candles tinned food, make secure building collect kids from school etc. Gradiually things build up and when its class 3 you stay home your car is not insured to drive etc. Once everything dies down there is the clean up operation which can take days or weeks depending on severity.

We used to do the same Stella, going to Kmart and buying all the batteries for the radio, and tinned food, and we'd brown tape the glass in the windows. Don't know about you but I've always been fascinated by Hurricanes and Tornadoes eversince, it was scary but so exciting too.

We went to Houston in September on a motorcycle tour and got caught in hurricane Ike! Very exciting but it cut the biking a bit short. 4 days instead of 8! We really enjoyed ourselves despite not having electricity, petrol, water, phones, mobile phones or much food!

Biker Babe, what made you choose Houston to do the bike tour, just out of interest??

We met people from Houston a couple of years ago when doing a tour in California and they invited us. Hoping to go again just without the hurricane next time. We had never thought of hurricanes, I was just worried about snakes.
