I'm thinking of taking my kids to New York next May and want to know the best way to go. Am I best to book a package through someone like Virgin or is it cheaper to go independant and if so has anyone got any hotel reccomendations? Don't want to spend a fortune, but don't want to slum it either and need to be in an area I would feel safe in alone with 2 children. Thanks

I've been to NY and it felt pretty safe, appears to be a policeman on every corner (in the main tourist areas). We stayed practically in Times Square at the Paramount (basic but clean). We had a package with Expedia, flying Virgin from Gatwick. Try this site by putting the dates you want to go and watching the price over a few weeks/months - the price changes. We walked everywhere so don't know what the underground is like. Do the boat ride with Circle Line but check the times before you go as I loved that & I've heard that the bus rides with entrance paid for certain attractions like Empire State building etc are good value.
We had teenagers with us and they loved it. They walked around by themselves, as they wanted to go to Nike Town, Apple, Abercrombie & Fitch (actually worth going to as they had a gorgeous male model displaying a 6-pack on the door).

Hi Anne Found expedia good too. www.dialaflight.com sometimes have good offers on flight/hotel combination. I think its a safe city, I assume you intend to be in Manhattan. Enjoy its a fantastic city. Loved Chicago too its more modestly priced.

I've been to Chicago too, Barney. Less frantic that NY. Did you go in the winter or summer? Actually the food was better there than NY but that might have been coincidence.

Goodness, could have bumped into you. We went there for 5 days late Nov, early Dec, agree it's was clean and friendly. The wind coming off the lake chilled the bones.
They couldn't quite get our accents (welsh).
Ate at the 90th floor (I think), in the Hancock Tower - it was cloudy so couldn't see a thing.
