flaky scalp
      #181993 - 30/08/2008 11:48

Every now and again I get an itchy, flaky scalp. Head and Shoulders clears it up instantly, but strips the hair colour! Anyone know of a gentle but effective alternative please?

You could try Ketocanazole shampoo. It's available over the counter although a little expensive but it does work well and you don't need to use it every day. Alternatively you can try getting it on prescription. My boys use it without a problem.

When you are using the dandruff shampoo, just rub it between your palms and them massage onto your scalp without rubbing it all over your hair - got this tip from my hairdresser and it works! Maire

I use nizoral - it always works.

It may be worth thinking whether there is anything that is causing the flakey scalp - diet? stress? for me its yeast in foods or too much bread - same thing. also for me i get it if i'm stressed

Nizoral is the trade name for ketocanazole and so might be cheaper if asked for under that name.

Thanks maire- makes sense, will try it!
Thanks bellan- yes, a combination of work-stress and citrus fruits have done it, but just can't resist navel oranges every now and again!

I get this from time to time - like now and the whole head becomes inflamed as well. Everything seems to aggravate it - at the moment I have a silk band tied round my head to keep the hair off the back of my neck where it is particularly red. I think it's mainly caused by stress, having just had a stressful time but am now out of the stress so hope the problem clears itself up - it's driving me mad!

This could be related to yeast intolerance. I find when I'm under stress and allow myself to get tired or run-down that I tend to eat more sugar (esp. chunky PB KitKats) in an attempt to get a wee energy boost. I know that I'm yeast intolerant and that yeast feeds on sugar. And so, when there is more sugar in my system, the yeast goes wild. Patches of scaly skin on the inside of my elbows and insanity-creating hot itchiness along my hairline at my nape. It takes about three days of being vigilant (no bread, alcohol, fruit, sweets) to get the sugar out of my system and my skin back under control. It also makes my face less 'old', if you see what I mean. My skin looks fresher.
