waxing
      #181317 - 29/08/2008 17:02

hello, I have recently started waxing the leg, bikini and underarm area (at a salon) but was dismayed to find out that I now apparently have to exfoliate, instead of just washing with soap as I do, or else will get ingrown hairs.
In fact, I have bought said exfoliating scrub, takes ages to do and mucks up the bath tub terribly as is so oily, I now have to scrub the tub for ages to get it clean! Extra work, when I was trying to reduce the workload I had before with shaving at home. Plus, I've got bumps everywhere which seems to indicate ingrown hairs nonetheless. Disappointed...any one comments?

Hiya- i've been getting legs waxed for years , rarely exfoliate and haven't had ingrown hair. Although it may be a good idea every now and again for buffing etc, can't see it's essential.

Hi

I have tried both waxing and sugaring and find that sugaring is much better. Waxing takes the top layer of skin off, which sugaring doesn't, so you are less likely to get ingrowing hairs.

I make sure that I moisturise regularly and do exfoliate from time to time, but rarely more than once a week. I have tried loads of different ones and find the Clinique Sparkle Skin Body Exfoliator to be really good. It is a bit expensive but lasts for ages as I don't need to use it so often. It doesn't leave that oily film either!

Good luck!

I use one of hose shower puff things that are made of lots of layers o nyon net, like a big pom-pom. It works a an exfoliator, and you just use normal shower gel

have waxed for years at salon. Never exfoliate unless I want to use fake tan type products, when you need to exfoliate to stop streaks. If my skin looks dry/flaky I use the nylon scrunchy things or a Sanctuary (get it at Boots) product with little beads of 'stuff' that rub the skin. Only ever had one ingrown hair on biki line, but popped it out before it caused a problem. Easy!

Have had my legs waxed for years and have never suffered ingrown hairs. I bought some exfoliating gloves from Tescos. Easy to use with ordinary shower gel.

I wax my own legs at home using the microwave stuff. I too use the scrunched up net curtain thingy - someone told me it was called a lather builder. One thing to watch out for though is fake tan. I was building up a nice golden glow on my legs using the moisturiser with a bit of a tan in it. Decided my legs needed waxing and ended up with really stripey legs where I'd taken the tan off! Then I really did have to exfoliate as I only wax the front below the knee, so the backs of my legs and my thighs were still tanned! I had to make the whole lot pale again.

I've had my legs waxed for years - very rarely have any problems with ingrowing hairs. I use those scrunchy things for exfoliating and normal shower gel most of the time.

Spanish Lady, the first time I got my underarms done I said never again, but you get used to it! It is definitely worth it.

I was told that people with curly/wavy hair are more prone to ingrowing hairs. No idea whether that's right or not?
