Has anyone been recently and have any tips to pass on?

We're thinking of going to Oia for two weeks next year but are concerned that two weeks on a small island might get boring.

AHHH Santorini,
Yes Maria came back a couple of weeks ago. Visited Santorini just for the day, (was on cruise at the time).
Very pretty place once you get to the top that is. The only tip I think I can give that is useful is stay away from the donkeys! Told OH that I will never set foot on that place again unless I land at airport on the island. (is there one?) Three ways to get to the top from quayside. Cable Car
on busy days you can wait for two to three hours for one, ride the said donkeys! or as we did vie for space with donkeys and climb over 500 steps. Watch out when donkeys return down steps unladen as they stop for nobody. Still you pay your money and take your choice. I think you might be right in that two weeks on such a small island may prove just a little boring. Any other info required just PM me.

Ladylou

Hi Maria, We also visited for one day from a cruise ship. We climbed to the top in a vehicle.....small bus I think. I believe there are some taxis also to avoid the steep climb.
I think maybe two weeks would be too long but friends of ours stayed for a week and did lots of walking which they enjoyed....so if you are into walking then a week would be good. We would certainly go back again but not for more than a week. It is worth doing some 'homework' first about the history which is fascinating.

have a good trip

We're thinking a week will be ample. And no donkeys! It's animal abuse in my opinion.

I've done some research about the volcano that destroyed Crete and the Minoans, and it does seem fascinating. However, these days, people go for the stunning caldera views and the blue roofs and white buildings so famous in that area. I am prepared for crowds though....the cruise boats at Santorini get a lot of criticism on Tripadvisor!!

Hi Maria,
I originally went on a day trip to Santorini and decided to return for 2 weeks, with the intention of going over to Paros in the middle of the stay.Unfortunately that didn't work out because rough weather meant we couldn't travel to Paros and for me 2 weeks in Santorini was definitely too long. The best part of Santorini really is the approach by the sea and the main town.
I agree that the way the donkeys are used is abusive. It really distressed me seeing how they were expected to run up and down that very steep approach ,in extreme heat, often carrying very overweight tourists.I can't understand how anyone would use them.We used the cable car, fortunately no long wait the day we went.
I prefer Paros and Naxos in that group of islands for a longer holiday.

I spent my 21st birthday on Santorini - all of 30 years ago! We slept on a beach, and my cake was a large tomato with a candle on top.
I went back with my family a few years ago - truly beautiful island - but the memories of 30 years ago could not be outdone! Yvonne's page

Hi Maria
Haven't been to Santorini recently, but went for two weeks about 18 years ago. Absolutely fab. What a dramatic place. I have to say that the black sand is not to everyone's taste. However, I love volcanic islands - I adore Lanzarote too. Santorini is small and so it really depends on the type of holiday you are looking for. If you want a relaxing time in a really beautiful place you should love it. I recommend hiring a scooter to get about.
Have fun.

Ada
