HELLLLLLLP ME PLEASE!!
      #176697 - 24/08/2008 23:28

One of our cats has taken to scratching the wallpaper off. It is below the dado rail and so she has a good stretch and then rips it off. OH going CRAZY. I have had to strip 5 sections off and he has re-papered them today.

Any suggestions? How can we solve this problem??

waiting anxiously

Your cat must love the texture of that paper. Get down to the pet shop and buy a scratching board for her. Anyone else with a better suggestion?

Hi ejane

As much as we love our cats, they like children, must be taught no means no.

A scratching post is a very good idea, but I think issi is right that it is the texture of the paper that it attracting the cat to it.

As much as I don't personally like them,so as to avoid,my furnishings being damaged in the past I have used mothballs, cats hate them completely and being a wall I'm not sure where you could hang them.

The other thing you could is when you see the cat near the wall, clap your hands loudly and shoo her/him away, it will take a few times for the 'association penny' to drop, but eventually it will, alternatively, have to hand a plastic carrier bag (like the ones from the supermarkets)and flick it open in front of the cat, they really don't like the noise.

I used this one on my first cat,it never hurt her of course, but as soon as she saw me reach for a bag she was gone like the wind.

My cat can be a complete nuisance so a good job we don't have any wallpaper!! She refuses to use a scratching post or anything like it. Having replaced two sets of sofa covers because she shredded them I got tough and broke the habit by spraying an air fresher (from a can) near her whenever the claws were out!! Apparently they hate the 'hiss'. It worked (fingers crossed!!) and the room smelled lovely.......

They hate being splashed with water too. I have used a water pistol to good effect in the past - it may seem cruel but it doesn't hurt them and they don't have to get wet if they keep away!!!

You need to be a good aim though, your OH might not appreciate you soaking his handy work!

Our dogs love water pistols but squidging an empty lemonade bottle has one of them heading for cover!

I am not sure whether you can still get aerosol dusters (use them on computer keyboards) make a really loud hissing sound, but no liquid!

Could consider not having wallpaper under the dado rail and putting on a paint glaze - that should fool the naughty boys. (or girls).

My boy thankfully just likes clawing the coconut matting doormat.

Uur dog used to lick the wallpaper near where his bed is right down to the bare plaster - we were told it was because of the smell of the wallpaper paste - we tried lots of things and eventually we bought a thin sheet of perspex and screwed it onto the wall - obviously you can't do that for all your walls.

You need to try different aversion techniques until you find one that works or stops him doing it.

I've heard that a weak solution of lemon juice squirted at them is a good one.

I too had a cat that used to lick the wallpaper, for some reason they love the taste, although many pastes contain a fungicide which is poisonous to cats. I used the plastic bag method, they hate them! Its a very good way of stopping them doing things which may be harmful to your house or themselves.

I now have 3 cats and NO wallpaper in the house. Problem solved.

I've used the plastic bag thing, or with one of my cats he was terrified if I got the cooking foil out so one rattle of that and he was gone. I also pinned some to the kitchen door it stopped him scratching at night.
I had trouble with a neighbours cat spraying our front door (nice!) I sprayed polish on the door he hated the smell so stopped dong it, could be worth spraying something smelly on the skirting board to put Polly off?
