Hi pollymay This is a recurring thread on the forum and it just shows how difficult it is to get a good hairdresser who listens.
I don't live near Winchester so can't advise on specific hairdressers, but several forumers suggested asking someone in the street whose hair style you like. Everyone who did this said the person was pleased to be complimented and willingly shared the name of their hairdresser.

Hi Foxie,
Another hairdressing dilemma..... I have been going to the same hairdresser for 20yrs plus, apart from when living in USA, came back to her too... no matter what style I ask for it usually always looks the same or similar. She is a great girl and of course we are friends after all this time. Really would like to try somewhere new and a bit more trendy, dont have the heart to tell her, what would you do, anyone any idea,s ?

If you are happy to travel try Maxine at Utopian in Bicester. A really good cutter of fine hair (mine is too), Prices reasonable also. Just up the A34.

Fiona,
if you go to the hairdresser wearing the same old clothes, same old make-up, she'll assume you want the same old style. We all tend to go to the hairdresser in the same jeans, top, not too much make-up.
Dress up in somthing a bit different, make more effort with the make-up, a bit of mascara, a brighter lipstick. Tell her you want to revamp your image, you've done the clothes and make-up, now what can she do.

Hi Fiona Why don't you look out some pictures of what you would like from a haircut. Say to your current hairdresser that you want a change and make this really clear. Give your hairdresser a chance to do a new style. If you have known her for over 20 years you must have a good relationship with her.
The alternative is to change hairdressers. There are two ways to do this and it depends on you which one you use. Either be upfront and explain, which is difficult but at least you get all the difficulties over in one go. Or, if she is at a salon, and only works certain days say your life has changed and you can no longer make the days she works.
If she comes to your house, when it's time to make an appointment say you haven't got your diary to hand and will ring her. Ring her at a time when you know she is working and leave a message on her answer phone. Say you find this difficult after 20 years and still would like to be friends, but have decided to have a change of hairdressers. Thank her for all her help and skills over the years.
The bottom line is that, it is your hair, you are the customer and life is too short for OK styles when you could look fab! I know it is difficult, I have been there myself. For this reason I would never have someone who comes to my house although it is cheaper.
Good luck Foxie x.

Hello to all,
Thanks for the advice re"change of hairdresser", take on board all advice, and next time at the salon will tell her in a nice way that the hair has to match the image, and yes by wearing different clothes/make up etc this should help to make a point. But think Im just going to have to change salons, 50 this year so need to feel good and look good.
Have a nice day everyone.

Hi Fiona Let us know how you get on. I know it's difficult, but at the end of the day it is your hair and your money!
