Cough
      #172933 - 20/08/2008 10:55

I've had a cough for 9 weeks and goodness it's a pain, people that don't know me say "that's a smoker's cough" - I've never smoked in my life. It's horrible. Had x-ray, tests etc and there is no bacteria in the cough so antibiotics won't touch it and the doctor says not to take cough medicine as that will suppress the cough and that's bad. He just said I have to (apologies for the details) cough it up and don't swallow (gross). And take a bit of exercise. Have read the article in W&H and am aware that this cough seems to be doing the rounds too, not just me.

Have any of you lovely ladies have any other remedies or advice?

I have asthma had it for 30 years I also was told last year I have a lung problem called Sarcodiosis which is rare. This causes me to have a cough I have tried the lot over the years, but the only thing that stops me is my late mum's remedy that she used to give me when I was small, it's horrid but works for me it's butter vinegar and sugar just mix an ammount to fill a table spoon and warm it to swallow. Oh and have a mint ready to suck after. Good luck xx

Oh goodness, sounds horrid. I'll keep it in mind though, you'll try anything when you're desperate.

It's the phelgm that I need to remove, does it work on that?

put a few menthol crystals in a bowl of boiling water and then inhale, you really start coughing and bring stuff up sometimes to the point of being violently sick which is great because it brings up a lot of phlegm, good luck!

This is my first posting, but I had to respond to your cough. I have had a cough for more years than I care to think about and have visited doctors, consultants, x-ray departments, etc. all to no avail. I think more in desparation than anything else, my GP finally decided it must be a habit cough. This I could live with if only he could tell me how to break the habit which of course he couldnt. Now I am living in France whose health care everyone tells me is one of the best in the world, so I thought I would have a word with my French GP, He immediately prescribed Néo Codion which actually worked and I was able to visit the theatre for the first time in years without ruining the performance for everyone else. However, the tablets do not appear to be a cure, more a suppressant but they do offer some relief. I also find if I do not eat for at least two hours before I go to bed, I do not lie awake half the night coughing.
