The Dordogne...Can't wait....Who Knows it well?
      #172408 - 19/08/2008 16:43

It's only two weeks and 3 days now till we go on Holiday to The Dordogne, the area has come well recommended by close friends so I know we'll love it, we are staying in a little Village called Saint Vincent de Cosse near Sarlat, does anyone know it, or that area of the Dordogne?

OH used to do a lot of caving in that area so we've been there many times. We used to camp in St Amand de Coly. There's certainly plenty to do and see in that area and some lovely places to walk. The caves at Lascaux near Montignac are very interesting and full of cave paintings - you actually walk through a man-made replica of the caves (copied so that the cave paintings in the original never get damaged). The copy is actually so good that even very experienced cavers could be fooled by it if they didn't know.

I'd also recommend a visit to Les Eyzies about 25k from Sarlat (http://www.leseyzies.com/accueil_gb.htm) - it's a real sun trap in the afternoons and there are plenty of cafes to sit outside and just watch the world go by.

If you google Sarlat you should get plenty of websites in English with information about the area.

Hi Sunbeam

My daughter lives in the Dordogne, just a few miles south of Bergerac. I have been there several times and am going again next friday. It really is beautiful there, there are some lovely little villages, although I dont know the village you are going to. Plenty of vineyards too if you like wine, many of them give tours and tastings.

The weather is still very hot at the moment so hoping it stays that way for a while...I need some sun!

We loved the Dordogne, too! Its beautiful.Chrissi knows her stuff, the caves are lovely at Montignac, really worth a visit.
If I remember rightly Sarlat's nice too, lots of cobbled streets and shops. Thats if I've got the right place, it was a while ago.
Have a lovely time anyway Sunbeam. Envy you we are not going away until November, a while yet!!

Sunbeam,

OH says to tell you to take a trip to the Gouffre do Padirac (somewhere he's never taken me but keeps promising) http://www.france4families.com/dordogne/RegionsDordogneCavesPadirac.htm and the village of Rocamadour http://www.northofthedordogne.com/rocamadour.php (I've been there and it's lovely - I remember it was a very hot day with lots of pistache icecream to fight off the heat!

We went canoeing on the Dordogne one year (not as strenuous as it sounds) which was good fun and you see places you'd not go near otherwise. There's so much to do you'll have problems fitting it all in...

Sarlat itself if absolutely beautiful and so is Rocamadour. The latter is particularly busy with tourists but of course, there is a reason, ie it is so pretty.
Have a lovely time. Envy you the sunshine

YOu lucky thing; we were a bit south of there about 3 weeks ago. We had fab weather and were lucky as it's been dicey since, so be prepared to take a jumper/ sweatshirt or 2 , especially if you are staying in an old place with thick walls! It can be a bit touristy in the Sarlat area.

If you're interested in the cave paintings, the main caves have a limit per day of visitors so you need to ring 3 or 4 days ahead and book. They are amazing. The cave of 1000 mammoths, Rouffignac, is great...you go about a km inside the cliffs on a little train. We went to Pech-Merle this time, which has great paintings and also lovely rock formations.
Canoeing on the Dorodgne is fab...but make an early start as the river gets very busy. Take a picnic as there are lots of little beaches you can pull up on. We used www.canoe-kayak-dordogne.fr/ who were really punctual picking you up at the end of the trip and taking you back to the car.
Fab food, wine, countryside...enjoy. Make sure you visit local markets too.
P
