sorry, didn't quite know where to post this. S has a venus fly-trap which he loves (???) and even collects rain water for it because "he prefers it to tap water"!!! S has now gone off on hols with mates and I have borrowed it and placed it in my kitchen as we seem to have a plague of flies at the mo. It (he?) is doing a stirling job munching all the flies but I wondered why some of its 'mouths'/'heads'/whatever are drooping and turning black?
It was doing that a bit before the fly feast and there seem to be plenty of new heads developing - is this normal? I would be grateful for any advice or just sharing of experiences with these weired yet facinating plants.
I am a bit worried that I might be killing it somehow (as is my way with plants!)

Out of sheer fascination I got myself a baby Venus Fly Trap, and lovingly tended it. Went alright for a while, and grew some and produced three stalks with flowers. But unfortunately all sorts of things got in the way..... that shop I now wish I had never considered joining, took over too much of my time, and the poor thing died! One thing I do now know about this particular type of plant, that nothing is allowed to touch the "mouths". Touch it with your fingers, or something else, which makes it close, so, in fact anything but a fly, then the "mouth" closes but has nothing in it, and it dies off. The only thing that is allowed to land on or touch these mouths are insects. So, perhaps something else touched it??? It is a bog plant by the way, and its feet should stand in a tad of water, and not allowed to run dry - which was my "sin".... the poor thing went dry and died. Good luck!!

Thanks for that girls. This one hasn't flowered yet but I think you have given me an insight into the reason for the dying heads. Methinks my son has not been able to resist touching them to make them close - he's 18 but a big kid and I think he would find it too tempting. I will warn him when he gets back.
Chatelaine - I love your 6 headed kitten - I wonder if they sell them at my local garden centre lol!

sorry chelsea, but have to say this...on the 'front page' as it were, it looks as if this is a post about a 'our venus fly-trap loo'
I've been imagining all day that you were having trouble with your loo seat...I thought to myself, well, it must be the loo seat...maybe it keeps dropping down suddenly and so it's a bit like a venus fly-trap...
caused me no end of mirth!!!!!!

Yes, it's a big green loo and every time you sit on it, it snaps shut and scratches your b*m with it's spikes!!!
Do you think I should call a plumber?
