soya milk- an aquired taste?
      #170817 - 17/08/2008 20:28

Every now and then I think I should try soya milk but always seems to have a bitter after taste - is it me.
Do you know of a brand that tastes like milk?

Is it just me - do you get used to it??

Hi Dippy

Yes it is rather an acquired taste, but now I have it all the time over cereal and in tea and coffee.

I like the Alpro brand (in blue carton)

Sue x

I like the Alpro brand too Dippy. I have it on cereal and now no longer enjoy cow's milk on cereal, but I don't put soya in tea or coffee - it just doesn't taste the same. You can get the Alpro in half litre cartons, so it doesn't go off before you finish it!

I agree that soya milk is an acquired taste. Now, I don't like the Alpro brand, and much prefer "So Good", which I use to make my porridge every morning; however, I have good old cow's skimmed milk in my tea - tea with soya milk just does not taste very nice at all.

How strange, I bought some Soya milk taday as my teenage son has developed asthma this year and the doc advised to reduce as much dairy produce as possible. He tried it for the first time tonight, his comment was "this is disgusting" so I have not felt tempted to try myself so far!

Hello dippy
I have had soya milk since the early 80s and it does take a while to get used to .
However you need to try both types. There is a big difference because one sort is sweetened - often with apple juice- and the other is unsweetened.
I cant remember what milk tastes like but some people prefer the unsweetened.
They are both made in all makes but you may find you prefer the unsweetened one on cereal.
So dont give up until you have tried both - and stick at it for about a week.
Personally I buy the sweetened as it tastes better on cereal to me.
Mind you the makes taste different too, the cheapest ones are Tescos own brand. They always produce their own type when they spot something selling well. In my opinion doesnt tast as good as the main brands tho.
good luck!

Faithfulone

Thankyou _ I felt it needed to be sweeter - I did not know you could get a sweetened version!

I am told you have to try some thing 10 times for the taste to becoem accustomed - will get some today and let you all know how it goes!

I am on a dairy free diet and have also been told to steer clear of soya so now take Oat milk with my porridge in the morning. It has a lovely creamy taste and I prefer it to soya. Worth a try if you are avoiding dairy.

I like the Morrisons sweetened version - I can drink it "neat" and on cereal but I don't think I could have it in tea though! It takes a while but you do get used to.

Well it's stotting down today (you'll know what I mean!) so not very nice.

As for soya milk - I'd rather go without. Ditto butter v spread.

Hi, I have tried Soya milk in the past but never quite got used to the taste. I have now been on Rice Milk which is really nice. It looks like skimmed milk but it tastes sweet and is far nicer than soya milk. It's called Rice Dream and most of the supermarkets sell it as do Holland & Barrett. I can't bear cow's milk on my cereal or porridge now.

just out of curiosity Is Rice Milk, good for lowering cholesterol/your diet? Also I have given up buying Bertolli,(as instructed by dietician) as its soo expensive, now buy light version of butter. tastes a lot better as well.

Been using Waitroses Organic soya milk which is sweetened by apple juice so quite a pleasant taste. Great for cereals, white sauce etc. but not good in tea/coffee as it curdles.

OH has dairy allergy so this is ideal solution.

Hey Dippyduck
Just read your post. Yes takes a while to get used to but we are lucky here as you get it fresh, that makes a difference as well.
My tip for you is to make a power smoothie with it. I blend a cup of Soya with 1/2 cup oat flakes and dash of honey and a banana and I whiz it all together then poor into my cup and drink while walking to work. That keeps me going till at least lunch time.
