Putting on weight
      #170637 - 17/08/2008 16:38

Hi friends

Dont you just hate it when someone comments 'have you put on weight' ?!! knowing full well that I have lol !!

My mothers carer told me yesterday as I sat next to her, even though I valiantly tried to 'cover' my tummy and 'overhang' over my jeans lol.

Oh dear !!

Not very tactful of her Lillie!

I hate the fact that I have gradually put on weight since starting the menopause about 18 months ago. I used to be naturally very slim when I was young and constantly being told I was 'too thin'. The up side was being able to eat whatever I liked without putting on an ounce.

Now I only have to look at a biscuit and on it goes! I wouldn't expect anyone except perhaps very close family or friends to comment though - what's the point of that? It's not as if you don't know and you need it pointing out.

Yes I have to admit I was a little 'taken aback' when she actually came out with the comment ! But me being me - I just mumbled yes I have actually and just tried to change the subject. Some people are like that, which can be very hurtful to sensitive people such as myself. She said a similar thing before when I had grown my hair a little longer into a different style - she said ' Do you like you hair like that ? I much prefer it short as it was, it suits you far better !' I was very upset with that comment I can tell you !

When my ES was 3 and at playgroup, he walked up to the one of the staff and asked her if she had a baby in her tummy. She relied that no she didn't, to which he said "well why is it so big then?" Hoped the ground would swallow me up. Thankfully she laughed and said "No, its just because I eat too much"

How rude some people can be, lets face it we all know when we have put on weight and dont want people to confirm this, we feel bad enough about putting on those extra pounds !! but how nice it is when people tell us we have lost weight !!! - thats allowed x

My sister has the perfect answer for anyone who makes an uncalled for personal remarks. She smiles sweetly and says "do you know, I was thinking exactly the same thing about you!"

Chelsea Morning, you don't look old enough to be menopausal! I remember seeing you at the Covent Garden lunch and you looked perfectly okay to me!I'm in my early forties and am certainly finding it a lot more difficult to keep my weight down as I get older - why can't I be one of these people with a mega fast metabolism? Still, life's too short to worry about it too much, so I guess it's just all things in moderation and crawl to the gym when I feel in the mood! Another thing - don't you think that "you're looking well" is another way of saying "you've put on the pounds!".That really is one of the most irritating remarks ever invented!!

Not just me then!!!! I hate the way I look now....I have a very glam friend, who mentions little things from time to time that I could be doing. I'm not offended, she means well, anyway it's true. I just bought that book "How Not to Look Old" (after seeing someone recommend it on the forum)...boy she's (the author) got her work cut out!

I'm glad its not just me, have put on nearly 2 stone in the last 3 yrs, weight is now steady but I dont seem to be able to lose any either which is frustrating to say the least.
My sister has gone up 2 dress sizes and so have I, so all my size 14 clothes that I bought 10 yrs ago when I lost nearly 3 stones have all gone to the charity shop, if anybody knows of a miracle cure for menopausal weight gain, I'm sure us ladies would like it.

Yes, I've ordered the book from the library Ozziekez. Long waiting list so must be popular.

Feel sorry for the woman who made those comments too. Social skills often elude me too! Must try harder.

My much beloved, though tactless, grandma and several of her friends bumped into a friend of mine years ago. My grandma said how lovely it was to see her and then turned to her friends and said ' You know it's true what they say about fat girls - they have such pretty faces!!' My friend said she felt kissed and slapped in the same sentence!!! LOL

Oh Anne, how could people think they are complimenting someone when they put it like that?
I was sitting with a few neighbours a few years ago having a coffee, and we were talking about dieting, one lovely neighbour said to me, "Oh you're fine, you always looks lovely", to which another neighbour replied, "Don't be silly look at the size of her legs"!! How I wished I had had Foxies sister's line ready to use then!

Love this forum!!! A lot of amusing lines - especially the one saying (approx) "Just what I was thinking about you".
PS To Spanish Lady - are you Spanish and where is Torrevieja?
