Bad Hair!! (well - old hair I suppose)
      #153164 - 22/07/2008 08:48

Can anyone advise on hair that seems to be getting coarser by the minute? And strangely it's on one side rather than the other which is not necessarily a good look. Should I just get it cut short or are there any miracle products out there. I'm in my 50s.
Or even advise a good hairdresser in the Southampton area???

Wow, wish mine was getting coarser by the hour, let alone the minute! Can suggest anything I'm afraid. A good cut will probably even it out. It is probably not quite as lop-sided as you think. The only other option would be a hair consultant, who deal with hair and scalp conditions - can't remember the posh word for them but yellow pages have them as hair consultants!

Hi Bellini

Only advice I could give is start with a hair appointment at a nice salon with an experienced hairdresser. The type of salon that have shampoos and treatments for sale as that may be just what you need.

If that doesn't work take susieblue's advice.

My hair's quite thin but the shampoos/treatments I get from my hairdressers plus using straighteners everyone thinks it's thicker.

Haven't been to the New Forest for years, are the horses still there?

I've just found some hair products that I absolutely love. I have fine hair so not at all like yours, but they have products for all different types of hair if you want to take a look at their website:

http://www.kevinmurphystore.com/

The shampoos are all sulphur free and everything smells really great. The conditioners are wonderful. I can see the difference in my hair when I don't use the products. (I don't work for them - I just discovered them recently when my son bought me some to try - and I fell in love!)

I'm also a major fan of Kerastase - particularly their hair masks - their products really work. Well worth the money. And of Aveda .

The Kevin Murphy shampoos sound interesting, Marg444. My hair is still fine and fly-away - and coloured. Do you recommend any particular one of the KM shampoos and conditioners?

Hi Dotful - I use the Angel Wash and Angel Rinse (shampoo and conditioner) and the Anti Gravity for styling. My son is a hairdresser and over the years I've tried dozens of products (had a cupboard full!) and these are the best I've tried (for me anyway).

I visited him a couple of weeks ago and got the absolutely most amazing treatment that has changed my life. My hair in addition to being fine is also fly away and especially in humid weather where it puffs up and goes a bit wavy and sticks out - not a good look. I'm not sure if you can get it done there, it's a hair straightening process using Keratin which has no chemicals, just restructures your hair so that it is straight (but not dead flat ironed straight). I can go out in the horrible humid weather we're having just now and it looks fantastic all the time. The good news is he did it for nothing, the bad news is I'd never be able to get it done otherwise because it costs $400! It lasts 3 months, and I love it!

Hi Bellini - you can get the products delivered in the UK - just go to the website www.kevinmurphystore.com

You can browse to see what products might work best for your type of hair.

marg444, thanks so much for coming back on this. Have had a look at the site and see they recommend the Balancing Wash for fine hair, but the Angel Wash looks lovely as well. They seem to have some good offers on the site (buy one, get one free), so may try more than one.

I know exactly what you mean about hair kinking in humid weather, but as my hair is short - I'm guessing yours is long/ longish - it's not a major problem so I don't think I could justify the investment in the treatment you describe, which sounds amazing.

Dotful - I have the balancing wash as well but use the angel wash more. I stocked up on everything when I was visiting my son (half price!). My hair isn't long - comes to a couple of inches below my ears. I would never get the treatment if I had to pay for it - it's so expensive. But I'm loving having it done for free. I don't know what I'll do when it washes out in three months - I'm spoiled for life now.

Bellini,I think the straightening treatment marg444 mentioned is available here.I recently admired someone's hair
which is at present long and straight and so shiny,I was amazed when she said it's actually curly. She has a treatment done at the hairdressers which lasts a couple of months. She gave me the number of the man who does it.
He is based in Westbourne ,which is not so far from you.Pm me if you would like his contact details.

I hope you both love them as much as I do. If you don't, please don't tell me! Just kidding....

I think I've tried every product out there - and these are my favourites, but of course everyone is different. I look forward to hearing what you think.

Sad to say the Kevin Murphy products didn't work for me.
I think I'm going to go back to Dove Pro Age products, having also tried Philip Kingsley.Tony and Guy,John Freida etc. Dove have given the best results and they are the cheapest too.
Boots ,Sun ,Swim and Gym also seems to give my hair a really good clean and leaves it shiny when I've used it.So I think I'll just accept what I've got and get on with it.
Thanks for your help Marg. It's not your fault I've got weird hair!

Clairol do a conditioner that is really great. It's the one that comes with their hair colour, but you can now buy it separately - 98p, and it does 3 sessions, one a week. Blonde, brunette and redhead. You can get it in Sainsbury's

You're supposed to leave it on for 3 minutes, but the longer you leave it, the better it is.

We're all addicted to it at work!
