DAY 101, Running On Empty??
      #146344 - 09/07/2008 09:03

Good morning girls, its horid here again today, I didnt get wet on my walk yesterday, but I probably will today.

After reading Sallys thread yesterday about having no motivation to do ANYTHING, and being rushed and pulled in all directions, and being tired all the time, it got me thinking.

ARE YOU GETTING ENOUGH???

TOP ENERGY FOODS???

One of the main reasons people reach for the sugary/wrong carbohydrate foods is because their running on empty, they need that quick fix to boost them thro the day.

Well we can change all that, you neednt be tired and irritable any longer. To maximize energy we need to include certain foods in our diets, especially those that boost the metabolism and sustain consistant energy levels.

The most important nutrient, required for production are the B complex groups of vitamins. Deficiencies in B vitamins can often be the underlying cause of poor adrenal gland function which results in energy slumps. Other metobolism-boosting nutrients include vitamin C, magnesium, zinc, iron,co-enzyme Q10 and the herbal plant Astragalus.

Top Energy Foods:

All type of sprouts - (seeds of legumes or grains that have been germinated) are high energy, life-enhancing foods that help improve, revitalize, strengthen and regenerate your body. They contain a high concentration of antioxidents as well as all the trace minerals, plus protien, enzymes and fibre. When seeds are sprouted, their nutritional power swells.

Grains - release energy slowly and give you a steady flow of energy instead of a quick high follower by a low. They are a good sourse of B vitamins which are needed to assist the spleen, your energy battery. Without the Bs you will definitely need a "jump start",

Oats - are not only packed with energy nutrients, but they help keep blood glucose levels at an even keel to maintain concentration and alertness. Enjoy a bowl of porridge in the morning for the perfect release of sustained energy throughout the day.

Parsley - is a nutrient powerhouse. It contains high levels of vitamin B12, more vitaminC than citrus fruits and just about all other known nutrients.

Raw vegitables - The range of B Complex vitamins, plus energy nutrients magnesium and iron, can be found in fresh veg, such as broccoli, asparagus and spinich. Broccoli is a good sourse of co-enzyme Q10, a critical nutrient for energy production at a cellular level.

Peache - have a high water content and have a laxative effect. They are wonderful in alkalinizing the blood stream and can be used to regulate the bowel and build the blood. Peaches are one of the best energy fruits because the body assimilates them very easily, giving an instant boost. Great in fruit smoothies. They are also great in helping eliminate toxins from the body and are a good food to eat in a weght loss programme.

Grapes - The theraputic value of grapes is thought to be due to their high magnesium content. Magnesium is invloved in the stage of the process that converts energy to glucose,

Mung beans- To feel full of beans, means you are busting with energy. And thats just what mung beans can provide you with; bags of energy.

Yams and Squashes - are packed with energy minerals and loads of vitC. Yams are also detozifying and balancing to hormones and blood sugar levels, ensuring that your energy supply is constant. Squashes motivate the circulation of energy meridians, especially strengthening digestive function.

Seeds - sunflower seeds are packed with with energy nutrients, get in the habit of carrying sunflower seeds around with you for when you need an instant energy pick-me-up.

Thats just a handful of foods that will keep you going thro thr day, enjoy!!

Good luck everyone, and welcome to the new starters.

xxx

Well mjm, that is certaintly "food for thought" pardon the pun. You have inspired me and I am going to try and make a mung bean stew today. I have heard of these little critters but have steered clear as I am not sure I would like them. Anyway it is dreadful weather here in Cornwall, wind, rain, mist, well you get the picture, it sounds COLD, and it looks COLD, I dont think it actually is COLD but it is as good a day to try mung bean stew as I am going to get this side of the black stump. Now I just have to venture out and source the mung beans!!

Hi mjm,
Thanks for compiling all that great information about energy foods. I have read in a magazine that one of the best types of food to eat for your skin are dark coloured ones eg blueberries, red grapes, blackberries, purple plums, strawberries & raspberries. Apparently, these are best for skin regeneration and are very effective against free radicals. I will try anything that stops me feeling hungry and looking wrinkled!!!!!!

mjm - thank you for all that info. re. the foods we should be eating.

honeybunny - how is the mung bean stew coming along? Do you use the beans just as you would any other beans? What else do you put into the stew? (sorry about all the questions!)

I often sprout mung beans and other pulses to use in salads or sandwiches or just to eat as they are - they're lovely and so easy to do.

Have a good day everyone x

Good for you honey, another fantastic bean is the ADUKI bean, its high in nutrients and low in calories, it burns fat and balances metabolism for weight management. Let us know what the stew tastes like.

A great tip Anne, I bought blueberries, strawberries, red grapes and apples yesterday, I just wish I had a local market where they would be grown locally and alot cheaper, its a pitty the fruit has to travel half way around the world before we see it.

Alex, Ive just bought 2 boxes of sprouted mixed beans from my local health food store, I too love them in salads and just to nibble at, yummy!

I think if you buy the dry beans in packets you have to soak some of them, but it will tell you on the label. I am too lazy and unorganized enough to plan, I get the tins, rinse the contents out in fresh water, and then heat up, much easier a lazy person!!

I dont want to turn this into a DIET because its not, its just giving your mind and body what it needs to function in our busy, busy lives, without the energy slumps we often get if we run on empty.

You still have to stick to the golden rules!!

Mung bean stew
Ingredients
Serves 4

250g mung beans soaked for at least 6 hours
1 onion, peeled and finely chopped
½ tsp turmeric powder
½ tsp cumin
1 wheat-free vegetable stock cube
2 carrots, trimmed, peeled and chopped
half a butternut squash, peeled, deseeded and chopped
1 celery stalk, trimmed and chopped
1 tsp tamari sauce
2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves
Method

Rinse the mung beans thoroughly and drain.

Place the onion, mung beans, turmeric, cumin and vegetable stock cube in a saucepan with 750ml water and bring to the boil. Simmer for 30 minutes.

Add the carrot, celery, squash and tamari and simmer for 10 minutes.

Serve with brown rice and sprinkled with coriander leaves.

To turn this into a soup for the next day, add more water, extra fresh herbs of your choice, some more stock and blend until smooth.

I can highly recommend this, its the first time I have tried mung beans and I just added extra herbs to suit my taste.

Me again, I forgot to say, I used tinned mung beans as I did not realise you had to soak them for so long. They seemed fine to me but then I did not know what it was supposed to taste like anyway!!

That sound fab Honey, really healthy too, I like the idea of the soup the next day as well.

No sign of Sally yet, do you think she read the thread this morning, and dashed to her nearest super market to fill her shelves with energy foods, yes, I think she has!

Hope your feeling better today Sal.xxx

Great ideas for food mjm, thank you and honeybunny, the thought of that stew is making me hungry!

I know that feeling tired is my downfall - I've resolved to deal with it more sensibly - partly by recognising that if you're tired, the bet thing to do is not eat, but rest, but also that if a qucik fix is necessary, "superfoods" are the way to do it! Ive just stocked up on muesli and alos microwavable porridge - not as nice as the real stuff, but easy to prepare and very filling!

Have a lovely trip SL!

Bon voyage, Spanishlady.

I've got parsley and coriander in the fridge but not much else. Must go shopping tomorrow. I have got some eggs so I could make a persil omelette. When we were on holiday in Malta many years ago, "persil omelette" was on the menu. I asked the waitress what that meant and she said it was an omelette made with persil! After much discussion, it turned out that persil was parsley, not a well known brand of washing powder.
