It's Bad News
      #143947 - 05/07/2008 09:25

Good Morning Everyone

I did not post last night when I got back from the Isle of Wight because it was late and I had had a very long and traumatic day. So here is an update on my dad following on from my post earlier in the week.........

Dad has his tests yesterday, and unfortunatly it looks like he does indeed have bowel cancer.

They found an area of the bowel that was abnormal with what they believe to be a growth. They have taken biopsys to confirm what the consultant thinks he has found (I am clinging on to the vague hope that he is wrong). From what I understand the biopsy results will confirm if the growth is banign or malignant. But either way he will need surgery.

We wont know until the 17th July what the treatment plan will be, but depending on the results it will be surgery and kemo, or mabey just surgery.....dont know.

Dad took the news very calmly...cool as a cucumber he was. Me on the otherhand, thats a different story. I felt like someone had smashed me over the head with a brick.

Anyway, I am not going to let this get me down. I had plans today to go to a hotel overnight on a work thing and we are having spa treatments and dinner etc and I have decided that I am still going to go. And of course in 3 weeks I am going on holiday which dad has told me I had better go or else!!

Sorry for the depressing post, but I promised to update you all. Have lovely weekends whatever you are doing. I hope the sun is shining.

Love Bluebell35xx

Bluebell I am so sad to hear this. Your dad is right, of course, that you should continue with your plans. If he at least needs surgery you will need these times away so that you will cope better with the worry and travelling. Also it will make your dad feel beter that you are still getting on with things. Thinking of you and sending hugs, xxG

Bluebell, I'm so sorry - but your father sounds wonderful the way he's taken the news so calmly and insisted on you ahving your holiday. He sounds a lovely man and obviously cares a lot about you.
You are quite right to go for the spa and the break - you need to be strong and well to support him - and if he is worrying about you, that won't help his recovery.

Will be thinking of him in my prayers.

Hi Bluebell,

I'm so sorry to hear the news about your Dad, but he sounds like he's taking it all in his stride and that must be of some comfort to you.

Keep doing as much as you can of all the things you have planned, as that will help to keep your mind busy and make the time go quicker. (Although we will all understand if you do not feel up to going to Covent Garden.)

Thinking of you and sending you lots of big hugs.

(Let me know if there's anything I can do.)

So sorry to hear your bad news but try to keep your chin up and be strong and positive for your dad; bet he's worrying more about the effects on everyone else rather than himself. My mum had bowel cancer seven years ago when she was 70. It was a horrible horrible time but she got through it and is fine now.

Thanks Girls

valaber - yes he is a wonderful man and I am very proud that he is my dad.

Heady - dont worry I am absolutely coming to Covent Garden. I am so looking forward to it and it will be a great distraction. I have even bought a new dress, although have not found anything yet to go over it. I might pop in to the ashford outlet tomorrow on my way back from the hotel.

I really ought to go and get ready to go to the hotel I have to be there in 2 hours and I am still in my nighty and have not packed.

See you all tomorrow evening when I am back (unless the hotel has internet :-)

Bluebellxx

Bluebell, sorry about your news, hope its not as bad as your are thinking, which I guess is natural.
You and your dad are so right for you to go to your weekend and any other outings you have booked, you need little distractions and breaks. Take care, x Anj

Hi Bluebell
So sorry to hear your news. The forum is here for sad news as well as happy tidings, so I'm really glad you posted.

Your Dad's attitude is fantastic and so typical of his generation. I hope I don't sound patronizing, but I truly admire their stoical acceptance of life and what is thrown at them. He is absolutely right about you going on holiday.

Hugs Foxie x.

Hi Bluebell
I just came on to check how your Dad was and I'm sorry to hear it is not good news. My Dad has always been very matter of fact and calm about all his hospital visits and it sounds like your Dad is doing the same - this is the best way through, and it will help you that he is taking it in his stride. Be prepared for the operation - it is quite shocking to see someone you love after an op, with tubes etc. but before you know it he'll be on the mend and out and about. You are a strong woman and I know you can be strong for your Dad too - he must be so proud to have a daughter who cares so much about him.

Hope you can enjoy your hols despite this.

Manc Girl x

Blubell, so sorry to hear about your dad.

I remember the day my dad first told me he had been diagnosed with cancer. It was approximately ten years ago and it was just before Christmas. I was just rushing through the door to go and meet an old friend when the phone rang. I picked it up and it was my dad phoning to give me the bad news.

I got in the car and cried all the way to my friend’s house. She lived about an hour’s drive away, but when I arrived on her doorstep I couldn't remember the journey.

The good news is ten years later at 82 years old; my dad is still very much alive and kicking and is enjoying a very good quality of life! Sometimes when we hear the word 'cancer' we think of impending or inevitable death! But thankfully it is not always the case! Far from it in fact!

I really hope your dad is as lucky as mine. Take care of yourself and enjoy your holiday in three weeks time!

Jane X

Hi Bluebell35, have just got in and turned my laptop on, so sorry to hear about your dad, I know its hard but you must all keep positive, sounds like as its possibly on a small area that surgery will be the answer, nowadays cancer is not a death sentance, yes, something that has to be got through but if your all strong enough you will all including your dad come through this. We are all here for you as you know and above all have a great time tonight just enjoy yourself. x
