Arthritis
      #115909 - 16/05/2008 14:12

I have arthritis in a few different places. I find it is worse at night which surprises me, as I thought if you were not using the particular joint, it would be better.
However, my worst is in the back of my neck. It is there in the morning and still there at night. I have nights where I cannot sleep with it.As you can imagine it just gives you a dreadful headache - permanently.
I do a lot of knitting, sewing and digital photography on the computer, so I am sure they dont help.
Does anybody know of ANYTHING one can take for arthritis. I would be most grateful.

Have tried glucosamine (large doses, no obvious benefit) cod liver oil - think it helps a bit, and anti-inflammatories - more helpful. I find a couple of paracetemol last thing at night can help with sleeping.

Hi there...have you had X-rays to confirm it is arthritis???......How about some relaxation techniques or trying some sort of head/neck massage....how many pillows do you have?.....are they hard or soft?...maybe trying different alternatives may help...otherwise its anti-inflamatories and paracetamol...you can take brufen with para as long as tolerated..No asthma stomach probs etc..There are prescription drugs for arthritis some in the form of slow release patches....so you get a steady trickle throughout the day..but you would need to see your Gp....

God luck!!..x

My OH has had bad arthritic pains in right foot for many years, which are worse in the winter with the damp cold weather, but has started taking Seatone supplement which contains green-lipped mussel extract, and swears that it's improved amazingly. A previous X-ray revealed, in the words of his GP, that he had the toe joint of a 70 yr old, and he's not one to be hoodwinked by hype or marketing.

Similarly, I've been taking a collection of cod liver, rose hip extract, glucosamine and evening primrose, and the intermittent pains I was getting in my right hip have completely disappeared, and the joint pains in various fingers have also lessened, though not disappeared completely.

It is also suggested that chondroitin can help, but this, together with the Seatone would have to be avoided by those who are known to experience seafood allergies.

I took glucosamine for ages with no effect. Then I read (on this forum) that I needed to take 1500mg a day. I've been doing that for 3 months, and it is starting to kick in. After a game of golf, my knees only ache, whereas before I would have been in agony.

I also use voltarol gel, which helps.

You say you do a lot of computer work/sewing, etc. Are you sure it's not muscle ache/spasms? I would go to the doctor and try and get some physio and exercises

Thanks for your advice. I have decided to go to the doc. next week. I have had it x-rayed - in 1984. Will ask for physio too. At the moment when it is really bad I pop along to the local golf club spa and have a massage. Hasn't worked this time.
Taking Glucosamine with chondroitin. Just upped the dose. I also take ginger which is supposed to be a natural anti inflamatory.
I need the sun I think, although do you find that weather has anything to do with it.

I certainly find heat helps. I'm also finding acupuncture quite helpful - if you don't mind the needles.

I have read that greenlip mussel extract (you can buy it in Holland and Barrett) is the answer and apparently immediate.
