I know it is a current trend and possibly fashion to be on a diet but I personally have never been on one. I was bought up to eat regular meals each day and have always felt that one should eat what they feel like eating but of course within reason and being sensible.
Am I alone in this idea or do others out there feel like me and generally eat what they like when they like?
Best wishes to those who are trying to loose weight right now. I don't wish to knock those who diet I just think there is another side to this issue of 'Food and Dieting.

Hi there Susie
I must add that I am an active sort of person and like my mum who is on her feet and active most of the day. She rarely sits down during the day and for more that half an hour at a time.
For example yesterday I was outside by 9.30 a.m I cleared the whole of the summerhouse out and did a spring clean on it. After this I painted two garden benches. In between doing these I hung out washing and weeded some of the vegetable plot then was on to making the evening meal for 7.30 p.m Phew no wonder come the end of the day I personally feel worn out and no need to diet

Good for you dbvc, I dont believe in diets either, they just make you miserable and you end up putting all the weight back on, and they can actually damage your health.

I think my problem is that I was brought up to clear my plate ("starving children in Africa", "you'll stay there until you finish", "no pud until you've finished your main" etc). This was at home and at primary school in the days of school meals consisting of stodge and veg boiled to destruction (no chance of chips every day so I still see chips as a treat). It's a hard habit to break but I think I'm getting there. I too think 'diets' are ridiculous - you end up longing for everything that's banned even if you'd not normally want it and are constantly hungry.

You're quite right dbverycherry that good habits and an active life are what we all need, but sadly it's all too easy to get into bad habits and not so easy to break them without support (ask any smoker).
Many of us find it hard to fit in as much activity as we should, for all kinds of reasons.
It's also a sad fact that the amount of food which would have kept you slim in your 30s and early 40s is more than you necessarily need once you're menopausal or after! So yes, what you've suggested is the ideal and that's what those of us who've got overweight are trying to get back to... Meanwhile, well done you for keeping your eating uner control.

Fighting ones cravings. If one is on a diet I am sure one is doing this all the time Sella_Vee! Yes I like food and love a good cream tea. I am strict with myself and only treat myself to one cream tea and one yummy Cornish pasty once a week during the summer while holidaying in Cornwall, three weeks this year Yippee....
