Too Fat to Toddle V The Olden Days
      #111255 - 06/05/2008 21:38

We had a discussion at work today, we were talking about my friends mum who is almost 90,and is very fit and active. We decided aged people live longer and are healthier because they had a better diet when they were younger during the war, when rationing, and walking everywhere was the norm, ( my mum,at 14 used to walk to work, about 10 miles each way ).I know other aspects of thier lives were very hard ,my mum had a particulary hard life as a child. What do you think, easy living, junk food, will these kids live untill they are 90 ??

AS they are holly,I doubt it, may be 2 in 10 children will live long enough to see their "old age".
My OH is 61 this year, and from his senior class back from 1963 of 36 children, there are just four survivors.! Were they fat,no,not many, but they grew up with the thought that to have a good life, they had to work hard and play hard.
Long hours of work and too much activity!!,so even back then the balance wasn't right.

I watched To fat to toddle last night and was horrified. At least their parents had seen the light and were prepared to change to help their children. I would like to return in a year's time and just see what has happened.

When I was at school there were a few fat children, but looking back now they were probably just plump rather than fat. There seem to be lots more fat children now. I think it is all the additives and prepared food. I make sandwiches for me and Mr F. each morning to take to work. It is a bit of a fag at times but at least I know what we are eating. It is also cheaper, so more money to spend on other things.

I was also horrified recently to find out how many calories there are in a typical coffee shop coffee and muffin. Having a coffee and muffin every morning would soon show on your body.

I also think it is the sheer availability of food 24/7. I can remember when restaurants served lunch between 12 - 2.30 pm and then did not open again until the evening. Nowadays it is possible to get food at any time of the day or night.

We've just got back from the States and I am convinced it is the sheer availability of food that causes the obesity problem. You can't move more than 100 yds (if that) before there's another 'dunkin donuts' 'wendys' 'taco bell' there is food everywhere and most of it except the donuts, is covered in cheese. The portion sizes seem to have reduced a bit since I was last there but they're still enormous. (or is it that UK portion sizes have increased and I've got used to it)

I feel really sorry for anyone in the US who wants to loose weight, it must be torture. There is food everywhere you look and most of it available 20 if not 24 hours a day. You'd have to have remarkable willpower to resist such a constant onslaught.

Having lost nearly four stone a few years ago I know how difficult it is to get it off and keep it off, I'm glad we moved to France as I'm sure this has helped me keep it off - even with the wine and cheese, but supermarkets close on Sundays and for lunch - restaurants open for lunch and then for dinner - very few are open all day everyday. One springs to mind - yes you guessed it - McDonalds !!,

Annemari that is soooooo spooky. We were chatting to our Town Crier the other day (the way you do!!) and he quoted almost exactly the same figure; although I think he was talking about 1958. He said only the non-smokers had survived.

Didn't see the prog but can well believe that youngsters aren't gonna live to a ripe age with modern diets.

Like you, my grans walked many miles to work. My gran thought nothing of cycling 20 miles on a weekend before taking part in sport.

I had limited access to food - we just couldn't afford it and I was stick thin in my teens. Not so for us now. We are all chubby and eat far too much!

Saw it advertised...couldnt watch it...I was fat as a child..Loved my food and didnt exercise...blame my parents for allowing me to eat so much...
Soon grew out of it..and got an eating disorder through all the bullying...think it is such a shame those kids had to be paraded for all to see??..... Isnt that going to lead to bullying...although it is probably too late anyway!!!...
