Had my hair cut today - I thought it looked great (just a little bit shorter than normal, feels fantastic - really light) but now, when I get home, I'm not so sure ... It's not a bad cut, but it's like when you buy a gorgeous top in town because it makes you look like all sylph-like, and you get back home and you look like a sack of spuds. Plus the OH kept saying 'what have they done to your hair?'. But a) at the mo I don't give a toss what he thinks, and b) he's p*ssed. And hopefully by the time I sign off he'll be asleep.
I'll have to hit the serum/gel/mousse tomorrow and do something with it. Hey ho, at least it'll grow back!
Anyone else had this kind of experience with a new do?

Take heart it will grow. I once had my hair cut and highlighted. I was putting the world to rights with my hairdresser and didn't notice how much he was cutting off. It was really short. When I got home my now ex husband said'mm you look a bit like a bantum with your hair that colour and that short' With it being short the colour soon grew out and after a couple of weeks it didn't seem that short.

I bet if your OH had said "Wow you look great, it's taken years off you, very sexy, fancy going out for dinner" You wouldn't be feeling so flat about it.
Take heart, if you liked it at the hairdressers, the chances are it looks great !!

I agree with Betty R, I am sure you look lovely. What do husbands know. This is going to lead to a whole new husband post , but not tonight, because it is late and I have an audience. A new image takes courage but is well worth it. Congratulations!

Wash it yourself tomorrow and it will be fine. I love the way my hairdresser cuts my hair but don't like the way he blow dries it. However, the next morning, when I have washed it and blowdried it myself, it looks absolutely fine. If it is only a little bit shorter, you will quickly get used to it.

Oh Poor you-I really do sympathise, this has happened twice in my life, once when I was 17,my hair as straight as pump water and the hairdresser cut it so short I looked like a boy,I was so embarassed, I would not go to college for a couple of weeks!!and secondly about 16 yrs ago, I asked for a bob and came out in a style replica to that of a German Helmet. Worse still, a neighbour who I barely knew, asked me what I said to upset the hairdresser so much. Again very very embarassed. Still as you say,at least it grows back. My present hairdresser who I have been with for seven years knows EXACTLY which length to go. I'll even let her experiment with different styles, just so long as they are no shorter than my desired length. Cheer up,everyday that goes by it will get longer.

I came back from the hairdressers this evening feeling exactly like BC40. I took in two style photos that I liked and asked my hairdresser to choose which one would suit me best. I've come out looking exactly like I did at 9 years of age (except with wrinkles). Nothing like either style and yes, reminiscent of annemari's German helmet!
I know it will grow but oh... the embarrassment on Tuesday morning at work. My hair does grow quick but the quicker it grows, the more the grey roots show! http://www.womanandhome.com/forums/images/icons/frown.gif

I went to the hairdressers today and she razored loads of my hair off. I asked for it to be off my face, it looks so thin and flat, plus it's not level at the back. I rang her to say I wasn't happy (couldn't do it face to face) she will redo it on Wednesday. I could have cried when I got back home. Nothing like the picture I gave her. I don't think I have ever come home from any hairdresser happy with what they have done.

Ive always had trouble getting the hairdresser to understand what I want/dont want and often come out wishing i hadnt bothered. But the worst was when I decided to go for some highlights (which I imagined would be multi-tonal, youre worth it, very natural, etc) but actually looked like Mallen with several blonde chunky patches... aaagh. I was horrified and phoned my sister in law (she used to be a hairdresser but lives 150 miles away from me) and she said I should ring and tell hairdresser and he would put it right. The receptionist said they couldnt fit me in for next three days... oh no ... so I rang other hairdressers and they didnt want to know saying I should go back to where Id had it done! So off I went to Boots and bought their own brand colour (firt time for that too) against sister in law's advice. Did all tests and thought it would be good. But I came out looking like a gough (daughter and son said very gently as they knew I was about to get it all shaved off) Oh no, never going out again. so off to Boots again for lighter shade... thinking Im sure it will end up green if not careful so decided to opt for the natural lightening route and bought lemons. Washed my hair several times in the shower but to no avail. Really really clean hair and shower though. Kim and Aggie would have been sooo impressed. Had to wait for it to grow out. Will never do that again... cos Im worth it!!

I really dont know what it is about hairdressers. I had a great hairdresser in Derby, he was gay, and a faboulous colourist (which I need) we got on so well and then he went and took a job in Dubai. I found another really good hairdressers, an Aveda salon, the girl who does my hair is so nice, and once again we get on great, but I have to say she never really does my hair how I want it. I always say "Oh that looks nice", but to be honest, a lot of the time Im not happy.
I dont think it really matters what you tell them they just do exactly what they want. Plasmo x

My husband rarely notices or says oh you've had your hair cut not it looks nice or even it looks horrible. I find if I feel fed up my hair is horrible (my percpetion) even when it isn't. You will soon feel better about it.........and it does grow and you can change the colour, your husband needs to change his ways, which might be harder!!
Lots of luck

Hi Everyone Just to say I have been there and got the Tshirt. I decided that this would be the year I got my hair sorted out. I took advise from the forum (big thank you to dotful) and I finally have a style I like and I can manage myself. RESULT ! The Fox finally turned!!
Plasmo - it's your hair, you are paying do not accept second best, you are worth it!
Coldtoes - insist on speaking to the manager when you go back and explain exactly why you don't like your hair. And do not pay for this visit.
I will now get down from my soapbox.
Good luck girlies and let us know how it goes.

Hello, I've had a problem with my haircuts/colour since moving to a new area. I used to go to a brilliant place for 8 years and always pleased, unfortunately it's too far to go to even occasionally. Now my OH asks which hairdresser's reputation I'll be ruining next as I come home from yet another disaster in tears. The worst was in January when I almost had two different hairstyles at the same time - a chin length bob and a shoulder length flick; the fringe was cut so short that, even though I didn't summon the courage to go to a hairdresser until the end of April, it still didn't need a trim. The owner seemed most offended when I complained and I was terrified to let the salon try and rectify it. The colour was too dark and the 'lowlights' a banana colour. When I got home even my son noticed and said ****! Before my holiday 3 weeks ago and after grilling a famous salon about its best stylist/colourist etc I finally coughed up the equivalent of the cost of my holiday and had a restyle ...and its ok and only that I'm afraid. I'd like W&H to run an article in which experts will give advice on how to rectify salon disasters. PLEASE! P.S I'm going to show OH this post so he knows it's not just me

I hear you!!! Been there and done all that aswell. I thought it was just me that had a problem with hairdressers until I read the forum and what all you girls have been through, why do we put up with it? I agree entirely with plasmo, I always get the feeling that no matter what you ask them to do they will always do their own version of it and there's the rub, it doesn't always match your version. I sympathise with those of you who have always been relatively happy with your hairdresser then move away or they move away. I have been an Toni & Guy officianado for years now but although they are the best of the worst I have had problems with individual stylists. I had a bob for years and when I saw some old pics of me and was shocked by the similarity between me and matt lucas/marjorie dawes (dust!!) I was horrified that I had let the hairdresser do that to me. So I went back, chose a new stylist and told her I didn't want a bob anymore and she gave me a really sharp, fresh and sleek new hairdo that I completely loved, then she left!! Could I get anyone to re-create that, could I ****! So the last time I went I got a photo out of a mag so I could show her, she nodded and said she could do it and lo and behold, something completely different!! I felt really annoyed/robbed. I didn't have the courage to say anything I just didn't give her a tip!! So after 3 months of growing it out I have finally got the courage up to have my hair sorted out again. I have booked an appointment tomorrow (wish me luck) with a new stylist that has come recommended and I had a seperate consultation with her the other day and so far so good, so we will see if my faith in hairdressers will be restored again.
I'll keep you posted,

My daughter is a hairdresser, and she dreads it when someone comes in with a picture and says they want it just like that. In many cases, she has to explain (tactfully) that it won't work because their hair is too thin/thick/curly, or their hairline is wrong, or their face shape is wrong, or a million other things.
Even worse, that it might look like a simple style and it's actually high maintenance requiring blow drying, and starightening, and wax.. And she knows that person will never make that effort.
Fortunately she a tactful girl, and usually persuades the person too compromise on something that suits them better.
Unless it's me, and she just tells me not to be so ridiculous. Then cuts my hair the way she thinks is best for at that time. And she's usually right. My mid brown hair is currently sporting lowlights in gold, red and dark brown.
