Window blinds - privacy measure
      #109598 - 02/05/2008 14:59

Hi

I live in a new house and nets are considered a real "no,no". The only trouble is, one of our rooms is distinctly "on view". It has a lovely view so I only want to screen maybe the bottom 2 or 3 feet so you can't be seen whilst sitting on the settee (and want to be lazy in privacy!)

Any ideas ladies? Shoji screens are too large and the newspaper I bought yesterday is too trashy to use!! I tell everyone I read the Times and have to keep my reputation intact!

My son and DIL live in Holland and what they all seem to do there is cover the bottom third or so of the window with an opaque film - often it has a slight decoration on it. I think you can buy spray on stuff but it needs to be applied well or it can run!

An alternative is thin slatted venetian blinds -if they are down but 'open' a lot of light comes through.

One of my mags last month mentioned opaque film - not sure if it was W&H, GH or She. Actually looked quite attractive (not like frosted glass).

I have nets...I HATE them but OH says it's not worth buying new blinds until we have our extension built...which I suppose is true, but I just loathe them sooo much.

The opaque film can be very attractive I've seen it in a friend's house. I think B and Q do it.

In Sweden they put pot plants on the window sill to give some privacy. I used it in my last house and it does work, as long as you remember to water them

What about the cafe rod type things that you put up half way down the window-can't remeber what they are called but I think they look quite nice!

My neighbour has opaque film on her bottoms. No, the bottom halves of her bedroom windows. I never noticed it till someone else said. So why not check it out?

Sarah Beeney says the spray has to be applied evenly so that might be more risky.

Good Luck

What about vertical blinds? Our living room looks out onto the path and anyone can peep in if they so wish. We had slatted venetian blinds originally, but they collect so much dust - so had verticals put in and they can be slanted to allow light in but people can't see you. Karen

I hate nets too but OH wont let me have nothing at the windows as our front garden not mature enough. so I have put 25 mm wooden venetian blinds in all windows on the front of our house and Im really pleased with the way they look on the outside and in. Plus you cant see in if you angle them just so and they let enough light in. Dusting is a bit of a task but got very nice feather duster so I have fun wit music on when cleaning!!!

I absolutely hate nets but in saying that I dont have a net but a pice of material about a third up from the bottom of the window, and I hang in various lengths big coloured glass balls all along the top of the window. It sounds really weird but it is really attractive and unusual, people have stopped outside and just stare at the window. It could of course be total SHOCK I dont know ha ha. Wish I could show you a picture. Plasmo xx
