Friday nights, a departure from previous novels, concerns six individual women, rather than a family.
The women, a disparate collection ranging from early twenties to seventy plus, meet regularly on Friday nights to share a bottle of wine. But when one member of the group meets a man, everything changes.
I did enjoy this book, but not as much as her previous novels. There were too many characters, all flawed in some way and I found them intensely irritating and frustrating.
However I am sure her many fans will still enjoy this book.

I mags51 and welcome to the Forum.
That is interesting because I am trying my best to read it as we speak. I just cannot get into it because I cant keep up with who is who. I have had it beside my bed for weeks now and keep reading other books in between but I will stick with it this time and see it through.
Do you have any books you really enjoyed reading that you would recommend?

Hi mags, I read this book on holiday recently and I have to say I loved it! I'd just read Nick Hornby's Slam before and I thought some of the characters were quite Hornbyish! I'd begun to think that her books were getting a bit samey, but I thought this was refreshingly different. Has anyone else read it?

I posted a review for Friday Nights on 12/2/2008. I think Joanna Trollope's unique skill for writing about relationships is demonstrated superbly in this novel. The characters are not always sympathetic but they are interesting and very real. I was fascinated by the way relationships changed when a new man arrived on the scene. I really enjoyed this book.

I have read most of Joanna Trollope's books(my personal favourite being A Village Affair) but got to feel they were all a bit samey.I haven't read Friday Nights but after all the views and reviews on here about it I think it may be on the next Amazon order.

I read it recently but it's nothing like as good as her others. I too found most of the characters annoying and I also felt the book never really got going. I'm glad I stuck with it but not sure I shall be rushing to read anymore of hers.
