Cheap flights? Don't make me laugh

Just trawling the 'net looking for flights for next January for a holiday to the Canary Islands. Flights coming up at around £233.00 for two of us, which seems wonderful until they add on, taxes, surcharges, etc etc - final 'cheap' price £160 each - How come?
Has anyone any ideas or experienced similar?

Thanks Carol - I will have a look now. I won't be travelling to Lanzarote until next Jan and I thought the prices would be cheap booking so early but up until now they are not. Unfortunately Easyjet doesn't fly to Lanzarote:(
Travelscan here I come.............

Re: Cheap flights? Don't make me laugh

Hi Carol. Update on my flight booking. Monarch want about £434 now for 2 of us. This is because we want to check in baggage, i.e. 1 bag each. We would like to sit together and have extra legroom. Opted out of the food option. Without the extra legroom it is still £334 - ish.
Still looking aournd though............watch this space
