Munich Christmas Markets
|
Have just booked a trip to Munich early December.
Was wondering if anyone has every been?? and tips would be very much appreciated.

Not been to Munich - been to Brussels and Bruges Christmas markets tho. It was great fun - is it an organised trip? Only problem we had was that they took us to the markets early in day and then took us back to hotel in evening so missed the most magical part with all the lights on etc. We were too far away to go back at night!!! Wrap up warm and drink the gluhwein!!! - then you will be toasty - and tipsy!!! Have a lovely time.

yes Anne its organised by the same people we went to Canada and US with in June.
We had a great time , about 40 of us so am looking forward to the crack.
I will remember your tip about not going back to the hotel too early in the evening. Thanks.

OOPS! sorry forgot to say Crack in Ireland means fun. LOL.
Made a bobo in US when chatting to some policemen who were staying at our hotel and wanted to join in our Irish singsong.
One of the lads went over to them and told them "join in the crack with us". Their faces were priceless. Thought he meant drugs.

I lived in Munich for three years and went every year to the markets. Its a really magical experience, but don't get disappointed with the tat, there is a bit of that. Ignore that and go for the wooden cribs, the decorated gingerbread and, of course, the gluhwein. If your staying centrally you will be able to walk home, or go on the Ubahn as parking can be a bit hard.
Enjoy, nothing else is ever like Munich in winter, its very 'christmas card, pretty.

Hi Rowena, Thanks for the tips. Just looking forward to the whole trip as we have never been to Germany.
Almost afraid to ask but what is Gluhwein?? I am presuming its some sort of alcahol wine???? If so I'll be in my alley.
Yes our hotel is central so should be able to walk back. Can you tell me what I should expect with the weather please??

Hope you have a great time I have been to the Rhine Christmas markets Klobenz, trier, rhudesiem, spent 4 days it was very pretty, my ex O/H is an European coach driver, so i have seen a few of these, i even spent a christmas there, they really concentrate on the children so it makes it vey special, i hope you enjoy it

Gluhwein is the spiced wine (we call it mulled wine but its not really the same). They serve it in pottery mugs on lots of stalls and its just wonderful.
The weather will be cold, there may have been snow and ice so take boots, thick socks, etc. If your hands get cold, go back to that gluhwein stand and wrap your hands around your mug!
I know you'll enjoy it, its a real experience.

Hi Carrieb - I've never been to the Christmas market but Munich is one of my fav cities and the market in summer is great so I should think it is pretty spectacular at Christmas time.
The place just has a buzz that's hard to describe!

I try to go to Munich every December around my birthday - it's my favourite place. There's alway lots of yummy things to eat - sausages, cakes, fruit dipped in melted chocolate....
As well as the main Christmas market, there is another one that has a medieval theme.
Try and go to a shop called Dalmyr - it's a bit like Fortnum & Mason for lovely posh food and beautiful Christmas decorations. I can recommend a restaurant called Alter Hof in the centre, but you might want to book before you go. Also, go to Kruezkam for coffe and cakes

I travel a lot to Munich for work and it is a really lovely place. Two years ago I visited the Christmas market one evening and it was magical; freezing cold, icy underfoot and with the most beautiful Christmas decorations to buy. We bought gluhwein in mugs; you had to pay a deposit for the mug but I just kept mine and forfeited the deposit.
Last year when I was there at Christmas I briefly visited the Christmas Market at the airport with my German colleague but it wasn't quite the same in mild drizzle!! Their weather has been as unpredictable as ours...
