Australia's Capital is not Sydney

Great and interesting magazine but with regard to the travel article on Australia (July 2009 issue, page 178), Canberra is the capital of Australia, not Sydney. Sydney is the state capital of New South Wales. Also King's Cross is probably not one of the safest areas for tourists to be walking around at night.

Re: Australia's Capital is not Sydney

When we lived in Perth [Oz], unbeknowingly gatecrashed a 5 year olds birthday party with a dozen mothers present. Had called to say farewell as we were departing to live in Belgium within days. Half the mothers present [ca. 12] didn't know where Belgium was. One was heard to remark "Belgium............ that's in Germany innit"?

Re: Australia's Capital is not Sydney

Just before we got married hubby worked for 7 months in Houston, Texas. One day the conversation in his office got round to the UK. Hubby asked the three people he was talking to if they knew the four countries that made up the United Kingdom. The answers were:

England (good start)
London (erm...)
Finland (....)

They gave up after that. As did hubby! He was gutted as he's a Scot so you'd think they may have had a little clue to at least one other country eh? Even more worryingly these were all PAs to Vice Presidents of the company so were dealing with people from all over the world every day
