Hi lexi I'm nearly 50 and have hair just below my shoulders; I feel it needs to have a bit of movement in it and not hang too flat and drag your face down, if you know what I mean, but do we have to have short hair if we feel it doesn't suit us... no we don't! Mags |

I always said that when i hit 40 i would have my hair cut short! But I am just under 40 and hair just below my shoulder and when i hit the big 40 i am not having it cut as its my pride and joy!! I dont think it matters as long as you are happy with the style and colour there is nothing cast in stone to say you must have it cut |

long hair is fab, no matter what your age is! depending on whether it is in good condition & not of the cutain variety! I'm 58 decided a few years ago to grow it (to my shoulders)& go blonde...never regretted it for a minute! Go for it!! |

Lexi I think if it suits you, then keep it long.....good point about long hair you can wear it up or down and look at the stars who are over 60 with long hair eg.......twiggy Requel Welch....and so on ![]() Freesia x |

Hi Lexi, I am 53 and my hair is well past my shoulders. I love it!!! It can be worn "up" or "down", curled, straightened....loads of choices. I ask my stylist every year whether I should take it shorter and she always says NO!!!! Think Jane Seymour, Twiggy, Jo Lumley....classy ladies who are breaking the mould as far as our perception of the "more mature" lady goes!!!

If it suits you and you like it, keep it. There are no rules, be yourself. |

In our mother's age, once you passed a certain age hair was short. You were "too old`" to have it long. Not nowadays. Okay, don't be silly and have it look like rats tails and hanging down like curtains but we all look and think younger nowadays. Mine is approaching my shoulders, a thing it hasn't done for a long time, and I rather like the change. |

We all agree, they are some really stylish women out there with longer hair, if it suits you and is healthy and sexy keep it !!! Unfortunately it does not suit me and I have the Fern Britton look .....

Hello lexi Don't cut your hair if you like it! 54 is certainly not 'too old' for long hair. I think I suit my hair longer so will keep it long for as long as it suits me - hopefully til I'm 94! Kez x |

My gran had long hair until well into her 80s. Mine is down to my bra strap and although it feels like a scarf in this weather (so it's up most of the time) I'd really miss it if I had it cut. If it still looks good and you're happy with it why get it cut short? |

If you have lovely hair, thick, shiny and glossy keep it long and enjoy your asset (and envious looks from people like me, whose hair goes stringy past a certain length). Your hair sounds fab. |

I have very curly hair and made the mistake of having it cut to a short bob length when i was 40...it looked awful..like a helmet on my head!!I hope to always have my hair about shoulder length.!! |

I am glad to read that so many others have not succumbed and cut their hair simply because they are over 40(Or over 50, like me!) I had the same problem as blossom97, I had my hair cut short but because it too is very curly it just looked dreadful. So I started growing it again and enjoy being able to wear it up or down..so many ways.. YES the famous women who have long hair are inspiring.. PS new to this forum, perhaps I should have introduced myself first...

Welcome Ailanthus. You should introduce yourself on the my lives section......!! Age doesn't matter for longer hair as long as it suits you. I am envious as I would love longer hair, but it really doesn't suit me, but it would be so great to be able to change styles and not be stuck with the same one all the time. Carsma x |

Welcome to the Forum Ailanthus, hope you will be happy with us. Good Morning Lexi and All, I think it is a personal choice, what makes you happy, if you are over a certain age, and you want to have long hair, or want it cut short, then so be it, no one can influence you, its a choice that is made by the beholder.
