Nails - had them done HELP!

I went for the Calgel nails and yes they look fab! However, when she had done one hand she casually mentioned not having long baths - not a problem - but, I go swimming twice a week! I didn't want to spoil the moment so I didn't ask but has anyone done any swimming with these nails? I have had the gel with polish which probably undoes the fact that the nails can breath! Also I got a bit carried away with the size, I've gone for long ones and just typing this is hard going. How do people who always have long nails cope with them?!! Applying cream is a nightmare, it gets right under the nail as does the mousse blusher I use. I won't mention going to the loo, just to say my screams could be heard three streets away!  As for my contact lenses - ouch! really difficult! Is there a knack to it all? I'm going to have them a bit shorter next time (as long as I can swim in them, if not I'm back to the drawing board.) In the meantime I'm enjoying the novelty and can't stop pointing at things!

Hee hee Marchlady.That really made me laugh! Not sure about the swimming,but I had gel nails on when I got married,and they drove me NUTS,so I know where you are coming from.Oopsi.

The trick is not to have them too long! One of the most difficult things is putting in your pin number into ATMs..
Not sure about the swimming, but think it is probably hot water which damages them - am always getting told off by my nail technician:

ATMs are hard but not as bad as answering my mobile (texting and phoning not an option at the moment). Have had to resort to knuckle and nose for answering the phone. Why does everyone call when I'm on the bus? It makes me look silly; It's not nails - the nails are lovely. I'll test the swimming next week.

You'll get used to them soon. I type all day with no problem and learnt my lesson the first time so have them a little shorter now. I also swim 2 or 3 times a week, I do go for the infills every fortnight. I add my own topcoat every few days to protect them from the water. It's rubbish about gel helping the nails breathe. I asked the owner of my nail bar and he told me gel is no less damaging than acrylic but it's more expensive. I've had gel nails for a couple of years now and when I have my next new set I might try acrylics to see if there's any difference.

be careful when opening car doors...thats painful! you may get used to the different noise you make when typing !! :-)

Hi ladies, I've always had long nails and have been typing for over 20 yrs. I eventually resorted to having acrylic nails about 6 months ago as for some reason my nails kept breaking down really low. I thought it might be my age (43). Anyway, I've found acrylic nails fine. Have infills every 2-3 weeks. The thing I find hardest with these lovely talons is that I cannot fasten/unfasten my necklaces. Am always having to call one of the children to assist. Also, getting the coin out of the supermarket trolley is quite a challenge, found myself having to prize it out with my car keys. I will suffer it though as they do look nice.

I have acrylic nails, but don't have them too long - also have infills every 3 weeks or so. I think over time you adapt to having longer nails - any difficulty with them being a bit longer is offset by the fact that they are so hard that you can do just about anything with them.
Marchbirdy, not sure if what I have done is the same as you have but I swim at least 3 times a week and have never found it a problem.

I remember when my sister first got hers and a sales assistant put her change down on the counter and she couldn't pick it up!!! She had to sort of slide it to the edge into her open purse!!!! They look lovely though!!!

I have my nails done, and the hardest things are opening a can of pop (or beer) and picking up change off the counter!
I always said that I would stop having them done when I finished work, but I still have them done, I think that they look nice. My manicurist is off to Florida on Sunday, then I am away so they won't get done for ages!
I swim most days and i doesn't seem to make any difference to them - just watch out that you don't stab any other swimmers!

Glad to see you went for the calgel too,first time I've been online this week so missed your post earlier but just to say what others have that you def need to get them quite short especially since you wear contact lense, I was like you to begin with but damaged so many lense and also had to get my husband to take them out that I decided short was better and have to say they do grow really fast with the calgel , much quicker than my nails normally do so short to begin with is good and makes it all last a bit longer! I have purple at the moment and this is another tip, dark colours last longer and appear to be stronger! what colour did you go for? I had french for my first but am more adventurous now, am going back next week to get orangey red for my hols

I highly recommend colours for holidays. I had French for my hols a couple of years ago and they went yellow from the salt water, not a good look!

I went swimming and felt like I'd got flippers on my hands, polish is ok though. I've gone for a lovely pinky purple and it has lasted for over a week now, however, the nail on my little finger has snapped. I've glued it on for now and am having a repair on Friday. The nail technician swears that Calgel 'breathes' despite me pointing out that with polish on the top it can't possibly! I'm going a bit shorter next week cos I feel like Edward Scissor Hands. I always think that dark polish lasts longer and seems harder - not sure why! At the mo, cans and clasps are impossible, I thought things like picking up coins and ring pulls would be easier with nails cos I always struggled when I had none - but no it's worse! Worth it though! Thanks for all your great advice

I have trained in both acrylic and Calgel and can assure you that the gel is much kinder to your nails. When you use Calgel you put a layer of gel over the natural nail before you apply the extension to the nail. This helps to protect the natural nail whereas when extensions are put on with acrylics the extension is applied to the natural nail. Also when you remove acrylics a lot of damage is done the natural nail whereas gels simply peel off. I would suggest to anyone that has Calgel tips put on that they should grow their nails with the tips and then remove them once the natural nail is long enough. They should then have Calgel applied over their natural nail to give them strength to continue to grow.
With all nail extensions though it is sensible to go shorter if you are not used to them.
