Epilators...advice please!

How do they work? Are they painful to use? 
Do you have to wait until you are..umm...a bit hairy before you can use one or do they work on stubble? 
(I hate the word stubble..is there another?)
I'm thinking of getting one so can anyone who has used one give me any advice please? I would also be interested to know which you consider to be the best brands!

I'll go along with Summer OUCH, the one I had even had a water filled plastic thing that you put in the freezer and then attached to the epilator, supposed to make it more comfortable. But speaking from experience I would rather give birth!

They're not that bad and if you keep using them the hairs decrease markedly. Yes it does hurt a bit but no worse than plucking your eyebrows. Skin feels a bit tingly afterwards but soon calms down. I would say the hairs need to be about 1/4 of an inch for one to work properly.
I would only use one on my legs of course.

Only for my legs too. I always use them after a glass or two of wine and before I go to bed so any redness and tingling subsides overnight.
You do get used to the flinch factor 
I wouldn't dare use them anywhere other than my legs and I do have problems with ingrowing hairs so you need to exfoliate regularly. Mind you, I had that with waxing too which I hate more.
I'd buy a Braun or a Phillips. Most have various 'lessen the pain' gadgets but it's all about bracing yourself. Keep the skin taught at all times and make sure your legs are bone dry.
The hair grows back more finely as you don't have a blunt cut as you would have from a razor. Use every three weeks or so.

i use one great for the legs, not that painful once you get used to it, however for bikini line only use on short hair on the sides unless you like extreme pain when you can try and go else where!!! mines a braun by the way

oh no I've had a leg wax....was not impressed AT ALL! Didn't like having to let the hair grow first and also ended up with a few ingrowing hairs.
I usually shave ever 3-4 days.....could I epilate as often????

Not sure, you see the epilator pulls the hair from further below the skin's surface - I won't say by the root because that's a myth - so it will take longer for it to grow back to the surface. However, the hairs you do pull will be at different stages of growth, anagen, catagen etc and will be quicker or slower to grow back. When you shave you just lop the top of and it needs redoing the 3rd day.
You don't have to leave 4 weeks between like you do for waxing and since it's done by you at home I don't see why you can't do it every 3 days as long as there is something there to epilate.
Am I making any sense? I seem to be waffling a bit today

Have used an epilator in winter time for the past few years but have my legs waxed for the summer. My Epilator sometimes cuts out mid use (probobly due to age)so would advise a good brand. Also make sure you can but a good supply of the "rubber bandy thingeys" that actually remove the hair cos I have had problems sourcing new ones and am looking at throwing the gizmo out when my current rubber things wear out. Still think waxing is best.

I was given one for Christmas one year and I've used it twice, it is excrutiating, don't even go there.

Used one years. the more you use it, the less it hurts. I've used it so much that my legs are almost bald now.
But I recommend a couple of nurofen and a double gin before you use one

Not that sore on the legs but watch what you are doing on the bikini line. Hairs need to be quite short there so as not to bruise. Keep the skin taught and you should be fine, I think the are better that waxing because you can do it at home.

I bought one a few (well actually more than a few) years ago - then threw it away. However have since had the more modern version and swear by it. Yes it is a bit painful but to be honest as a regulat user it really isn't too bad now - hair is weaker and shorter, and time in between having to do it is longer. Don't do it at the time of the month - for some reason it does hurt then!

Can I bear to spend...what £50????? Is that an average amount...I don't know....on something I'll used once and never go near again cos it's too flipping painful...

I bought one earlier this year from QVC - a tiny one for the face. Like other ladies have said it does hurt, but less so the more it is used.

I bought one last Christmas, a Braun X-elle, after reading good reviews and it's one of the best electrical things I have ever bought. Absolutely brilliant! I too had one years ago which was excrutiatingly painful and gave up. After plucking up the courage to use it I couldn't believe how pain free it was and moved straight onto the advanced head! You feel more of a tingle and it helps if you are used to having a leg wax but is much less painful. You can also use it on really short hair so there are no cover up days in the summer! The only one downside is that you can get a few ingrowing hairs at first but I only noticed it for the first few months. My colleagues have all got one now and are all converted! Not sure about other makes but I can't recommend this one highly enough!

highly recommend them, buy an expensive one, they hurt first time, but after a while they become less painful, great investment.....phillips is my brand
