Re: are M&S making their clothes smaller ...

I think you are right - either that, or they may be cutting them 'taller' - I am normally a size 18 in most stores - except Evans, when it comes to skirts, or dresses. I am unsizable there, because the waist is lower, the back longer. Therefore, i sometimes have to opt for Petite ranges, or go up a size. Even then, I may have to take other parts of the garment in, as it looks ridiculous.

Hello Ladies,

Have you tried H and M? I think they tend to be "Trendy " styles but worth a look maybe?

Re: are M&S making their clothes smaller ...

Hi, and thanks, and nice to meet you! Love the quote.
I haven't been there for a few years - love the styles, as I am a trendy kind of girl, but the range for larger ladies was a bit limited at the beginning of the noughties. I'll certainly give them another go.
I am a bit of a funny shape - somewhere between an apple shape and hour glass, i.e, hourglass from front, apple from side!!!
Still, I tend to work around my boobs (best feature on my body), and skim everything else with fit and flare, tailored clothes or Empire Line (doesn't help that I am short, but my new hubby loves my shape)!

Re: are M&S making their clothes smaller ...

I have size 16 trousers from M & S that fit, today I was in there trying on,(or trying to!) some navy ones that I need.I couldn't even get them over my bum, never mind trying to do them up! I have in my wardrobe an ancient cardi from them, size 14 which fits perfectly, even their size 16s now are a struggle to do up.

Re: are M&S making their clothes smaller ...

Maybe that's why the clothes are getting a bit cheaper there.
I bought 2 stretchy tops from them for work, and had to get size 20- but the bra sizes are spot on! Hmmm.

Re: are M&S making their clothes smaller ...

I agree, their sizes are definitely smaller (Or could it be that I'm just getting bigger!!). No honestly I've had to go up a size as well and like you other ladies I can still fit into my normal sized clothes that are hanging in my wardrobe. Dosent do much for your self esteem when you try things on!!

It certainly doesn't - especially in this 'size zero' culture. I helped at a fashion show once, and kept telling the models they needed a damn good meal inside them!

Re: are M&S making their clothes smaller ...

I tried on a cardigan in M&S on Saturday - it looked like a comedy outfit as the sleeves were about 3 inches too short....it didn't anywhere near fit me even though it was my usual size 16. OH fell about laughing and I was so disillusioned I refused to try on the 18!

M+ S are missing a fantastic marketing opportunity here. I know if they made things bigger I would buy LOTS! if the were a "size 14"

Re: are M&S making their clothes smaller ...

I think M&S are a bit hit and miss with sizes. I've got two skirts that should be identical apart from colour but there's over an inch difference in the waists. I've also got a size 18 skirt that won't do up and a size 14 that will and they're similar styles and a pair of size 16 trousers that are just right. I used to be able to buy from there without trying on if I was in a rush but I wouldn't risk it now.

Evans are also odd on sizes. I find that if a top fits my boobs it's like a tent elsewhere and I can go down a size or two from what I'd buy elsewhere and it will still be too big so haven't bought from there for ages. The shape of their clothes is very odd.

Re: are M&S making their clothes smaller ...

Agree their sizing is inconsistent. I'm an M&S fan but can fit in to anything between a size 12 and a size 16 (usually a 12-14) and even managed to buy a size 10 (no way!) the other week. Even 2 items the same size can differ, I've had the same experience as you ChrissiFi - 2 skirts, same style, different colours and 1 much tighter than the other.
I just have to try everything on now or end up taking it back. Another question - have I got abnormally short arms or are their full length sleeves designed with orangutans in mind? Everything I buy from M&S now has three quarter length sleeves or is petite as otherwise I have to roll the sleeves up - not a good look on someone in their 40's!

And the buttons fall off! Never used to happen, are they using cheaper thread, or not sewing on so tightly.

It's a nuisance

So it's not just me who picks the items with the loose buttons! I now check every one when I get home and re-sew.

20 years ago M&S used to be quite generous with their sizes, but not anymore.

I'm still a 10 in NEXT but haven't fitted a 10 in M&S for ages. Guess where I choose to shop?!

Re: are M&S making their clothes smaller ...

Many ,many years ago, when I was in my teens,I worked for a dress manufacturer who made clothes for M&S.They were extremely fussy in those days, would you believe that they even stipulated the size of the stitches? It's true! It really is frustrating trying to find things that fit there now.My daughter bought me a 16 blouse and I had to change it for a 20.I think that we just have to ignore the sizing and just find what fits. However,I'm not always up to trying things on there, will just have to now I guess. With regard to the buttons, for many ,many years now, they have been put on by machine and are not finished off properly.Sewing them on securely when you buy a new garment saves a lot of hassle later.

Re: are M&S making their clothes smaller ...

Wispa - here is my tip for buttons - as soon as you get home, paint over the thread and the button with clear nail varnish.

It will dry and the buttons will never fall off!

Sorry I'm sounding like a balmy old woman who has nothing to do but it is a good one.

Re: are M&S making their clothes smaller ...

I was in M&S on thurs and tried on a blouse sz12 which I am in other stores, and it was too tight around the middle, granted I have developed the "muffin" top due to middle age spread, but I came out of there feeling miserable thinking I know I need to get rid of the muffin but is it really too small?? I used to be able to buy straight off the rack, but now have to try on just in case!

Re: are M&S making their clothes smaller ...

I too have found their clothes to be rather small, and I havent gained any weight, but talking of bra's I went in to be measured and she gave me a total different bra size to what I was wearing, she then asked what size was I wearing at the time, I told her and she started making sure that the bra was fitting me ok, then said "well this is only a guide and your bra looks ok" the size she measured me for was a cup bigger than the size I was wearing, how do they work that out???

Re: are M&S making their clothes smaller ...

My daughter and some girls at work had been to M&S to be measured and all said they felt the size they gave was wrong. My daughter and one of the girls I work with went to House of Fraser store, used their service and both felt they got a better service, more accurate, and the bra's they got fit perfect, both sizes differed from the M&S measurement!

Re: are M&S making their clothes smaller ...

I have to agree with you there. I went to buy a pair of jeans from them a style that I often buy and they had obviously been designed for a very tall person even though I had picked out a short length also had to go up a size from my normal jeans.
They obviously are not considering the differant height/sizes of the general public....

perhaps M&S should be reading this post then they would see where they are going wrong and do something about it.

Just a thought!!!

Re: are M&S making their clothes smaller ...

I hate shopping in there now - I have to take three sizes of the same garment into the changing room. It makes shopping a chore. As you are limited to 8 items I used to take 8 different items to try on to see what coordinated with what. Now I am taking three of the same garment so never get complete outfits anymore - I buy piecemeal. Not only are te sizes dodgy but the quality is awful now. I have bought 5 tops of varying fabrics from there recently and all have shrunk on the first wash - even when following their washing instructions to the letter.

Re: are M&S making their clothes smaller ...

The problem is that M&S just don't listen to their customers. I have had the same problem with trouser leg lengths. A standard/medium used to fit me perfectly (I'm 5ft 6in) now they are too long and the short are too short.

When the assistant serving me agreed with me I asked to see a manager who insisted they had not changed their length, they had standard lengths. I then insisted that he get a tape measure and guess what they weren't the same length. He then told me it was because all their customers now wear high heels with trousers. I then asked him to actually LOOK at his customers (who were mostly middle aged women in sensible shoes) and he blustered that he didn't have time to continue the discussion. Later the assistant told me how frustrated M&S staff are by management indifference to their and customer comments.

I now avoid M&S like the plague.

Agree so much DeepBlue - the quality is dreadful and although they sometimes look ok hanging on the rail, the sizing is peculiar.

Prefer to save money buying from, say, Sainsburys - where at least they are cheaper and wash far better. Some of their woollens at the moment are really good.

I agree about M&S trouser lengths. I have a pair of size 10 long length which are perfect. I went to buy another pair today and the long is too long and the medium is too short!! Even the assistant was lost for words. She advised me to try on lots of pairs!!!!

I fit into some size 12 trousers in Marks but have to have 14 in others it doesn't make sense, I can end up buying a size 16 cardigan or sweater, they are definately more skimpy than they used to be.

Re: are M&S making their clothes smaller ...

This makes very comforting reading. I was in M & S yesterday for a pair of Roma jeans, short length always OK yesterday the waist was to big and the length to short. Medium size cardi - skimpy and the rest of the things I tried on were frumpy, this in the Per Una range. When I asked the assistant if they had changed the sizing she looked at me as if I was from another planet.! Decision -Avoid M & S for clothes.

Re: are M&S making their clothes smaller ...

Hi Everyone,

I dont have much luck with M@S at all where clothes are concerned, the standard trouser length is too long for me, and the Short length is way too short.

I love the colours of their T shirts, but they tend not to fit over my shoulders. Underwear is about the only thing I buy successfully that fits.

Re: are M&S making their clothes smaller ...

I think M+S have lost their way with regards clothes, what people want to wear and who their target market is.
I was always able to walk in and buy clothes that I knew were good value and fitted. Not now, I often walk around and out again without even trying things on.
Maybe they should have their designers or buyers talk to their customers, or read this forum.

I was in M&S today and they have loads of stripey cardigans which are very similar, just different colours and different applique. M&S have produced this style for the last few seasons haven't they got any other ideas?

I do buy their food (I was told today that M&S will be doing their Eat Out for 2 for £10 next week end).
