Watching What you Eat

Those of us struggling to keep ourselves from overeating - you know who you are! - may be interested in this notion. I recently went out to a busy restaurant and whilst waiting for my starter I had a look around at all the other women sitting there (I think OH was boring me with something about Spurs at the time). Some had not received their food yet and I speculated on the idea that all the overweight ones would dive in straight away and all the slim ones would not. I was absolutely right. Not only that, the overweight ones seemed to be eating and drinking all the time whereas the slimmer ones did not. I am only talking about a couple of women here but it did seem to highlight the differences in the way the women tackled their food and not just the amount. I have always been the first to start and finish my food and now I try to pause before starting, and during the meal. Somehow it makes me feel more in control of what I am eating. Try the observation and see if you agree.

I think you are right in that observation. Mum and Dad always made us put our knife and fork down for a little bit while eating and to have a modicum of conversation.
However,I was interested in a recent remark I read in a National Newspaper last week by an emminent Doctor,who said'There is no such thing as 'Unhealthy Food' all food is healthy,what is unhealthy is how badly or how well, the consumption of food is balanced'
That suits me, now where did I put those cream buns???

Issi, what an interesting observation and I think you are right. I once saw a doctor interviewed on television and he said that generally speaking slim people are slim because they eat less and have a different attitude to food.
I think it's getting the right balance; I know some women who order food and then really just pick at it and don't eat it at all (one woman I know will order a pizza and then just pick some of the peppers and onions off the top...).
Typically I'm a dive in and eat quickly person but shall give it a lot more thought now. And possibly I might also appear more ladylike!

I think eating with a knife and fork, cutting your food up and chewing it thoroughly helps. One tip I was given by a slim friend is: when you are eating out with friends and you don't really want a starter but feel you have to have one order a salad side dish. Ask for no dressing or dressing on the side. It takes quite a time to eat a salad and there are not many calories either.

I was interested to read this thread. I'm slim and always have been but I always dive in quick and eat my food quickly (OK, greedily!) - so I suppose I buck the trend there. But, I get full really quickly and I hate the feeling of eating when full so I don't eat such a lot. On the other hand, at a buffet or something where I am nibbling bits over a long period of time I can put away quite a lot of food - esp when drinking alcohol!
In general, I agree it is all about attitude. I am very controlling in my eating in general and believe in all things in moderation - I eat chocolate, cake or biscs and crisps every day and still stay slim cos I also eat lots of veg, fruit, meat, cereals etc. I force myself to be balanced and if I've had chips for lunch I will have rice or veg for dinner even if I do fancy something more unhealthy!
