Me too Sue. All my life my weight has been pretty stable and now all of a sudden I have put 10lb on in the last year - Dr said to 'eat like a bird' once you hit 50 to which my son replied, 'yeh Mum, but not like a vulture!'... |

Oh I'm definitely a vulture Jules!Nothing Sparrow like about my eating!! I look at a peanut and gain 10lbs! I've learned to live with my body now, I don't like it, but I accept it, and I'm happier for it, I still go swimming and couldnt careless if people look becos I'm overweight. I keep fit as much as I can, eat healthy as much as poss, Mon-Thurs we eat fish mostly with a little bit of chicken, and always fresh veg and salad, hardly ever have desserts only if someone coming. But Frid Sat Sun we eat what we like! My biggest failing is chocolate and eating inbetween meals, biscuits, choc bars are all a major problem to me, and all the while they produce chocolate I will never be slim! |

Think it was around 45 after I got divorced. My ex was one of those uber fit, sporty men who never seemed to sit still. I thought I was huge when only a size 12 - played squash three times a week, aerobics, swimming every morning. When I was my own person for the next five years, I rebelled and did absolutely nothing, except ride my horse. Think it was a combination of age, menopause and relaxation from stressful life which made my weight balloon (also started taking HRT at that time too). Prior to 45, I never knew what it was to diet - did eat sensibly, but never over a size 12. Now it is a constant battle, having knee and back problems for almost a year didnt help - although now that walking is easier, feel a whole lot better. Will never be a size 12 again though, so reconciled! |

I think 42 was about the age for me too. Up till then I never thought about what I ate or how much exercise I did. I stayed a size 10-12 all the time. Now I am a 12-14 but I am certain that a size 12 today is bigger than a size 12 years ago. |

Well, the reason for middle age spread is this. If you are plumper, your face saggs less. So you have a choice to make - either lose weight and have even more wrinkles and a droopy jaw line - or keep the weight on and have a smoother face! Me, I am ugly anyway, so I try to lose weight so that I do have at least one thing going for me! (Self esteem is another problem) |

For me i would say 44. For about 8 years i was a trim 8 stone 2, in November i suddenly put on 10lbs, i'm sure it was overnight! now i have put on another 7lbs this year. I walk 6-8 miles daily and am really struggling. illness has meant i have missed a few days walking. Will have to read the boards more and get some motivation from somewhere. |

Neonate, please don't say you are ugly. It is awful to read someone describing themselves in that way. There is so much you can do superficially to make yourself look better but it all starts inside so get that positive side of yourself to the surface. x |

Sorry about the 'ugly'. I do think I am a beautiful person!! |

I think middle spread crept on over about 3 tears from about 45.The nice thing is OH still always buys me pressies in the size I was when we met!AHH! |

I think it is just having to accept that as you get older you do need less food. Really depressing thought though! issi - I agree I think dress sizes have got larger and one size 10 in one shop could be a size 12 in another shop. I have said it before on other posts, but the easiest way to lose 7lbs is to stand up straight. This lifts your shoulders and puts some space between your hips and ribs. |

Having 3 children in my late 30s started my problem,a bad back for the next few years didnt help and now I am just grateful if I can keep my weight to 1 1/2 stone over my pre-baby days. But apparently, we lose 5lb of muscle and gain 10lb of fat every decade, thats what makes it look so bad!!! |

It hasn't struck YET!! I'm 47 and have a stomach like an ironing board!

yeah, know what you mean jane2008, my stomachs like an ironing board, it's just got quite a bit of that foam stuff under the cover..... 43 for me, I ended up with that spare tyre thing, although the weight stayed the same. I think the fat cells just moved around a bit! |

Chilla Liked your reply. My stomach use to be like an ironing board in my younger days, trouble is now I'm older I have to iron it and my face each morning before going to work otherwise I'm creased\wrinkled all day long! |

Hi Lillie, I would love to have the body I had about 14 years ago, I think my middle age started after I had my hystorechtomy, I just put loads of weight on. I joined Slimming World and lost three stone, but unforunately, put it all back on again. I eat a healthy diet most of the time, but I dont think I do enough physical exercise. I swim, and walk, but I think Im going to join Rosemary Conley's Class, as they combine the exercise with a diet. Trouble with me is I love to cook, MOH cooks also, I am a foodie in as much as I love trying new ingredients, and different styles of cooking, I just look at a teaspoon of cream and I say "hello 6 pounds in weight" its not fair. I always have good intentions but they never last. Plasmo x |

'I am as I am' said Omar Khyam - wish I could go along with the sentiments - I got fat in my 50's - no matter how we dress it up - i.e. 'middle age spread - it is fat and I am it now after years of being thin. So do we accept and live eating a healthy diet or obsess with trying to go back to what we used to be -- HELP pls !!!! |

I'm not fat but I long to be slim again as I used to be. Clothes just look so much nicer. What really irks me though is that I know a couple women of my age who really have kept their weight as it was, with no sign of a pot belly or burgeoning chest. Admittedly one of them seems not to eat and the other one is always cycling wherever she goes. |

I have a theory that because of my diminished height, this has caused the space between my ribs and hip bones to decreaseresult; thicker waist, not my mouths fault at all!!!

42 for me as well. I've been overweight though for a number of years. I was a size 12 until I reached the age of 29, then had my last child and also passed my diving test (not a good combination!). But everything was in proportion (ie went in at the waist, etc). At 42 my waist disappearred and now I've changed from an hour glass to an apple!!.
