Help,fedup with hair fading ...

I should have my haior coloured every six weeks but i tend to drag it out as long as possible,now what i really need is a good shampoo that will help stop it fading.
Any recomendations Ladies :-)

I like Aveda's Colour Conserve shampoo and condtioner. My colour lasts 8 weeks with that, sometimes more (but admittedly I have dark blonde hair with highlights so regrowth doesn't show too badly anyway.

I have mine highlighted with reds as I'm brunette but confess don't have it redone every 6 weeks. I use tresemme colour shampoo and conditioner but have stopped washing my every day.

Once shy,i think thats my problem too since growing it and and having it coloured i tend to wash it most days ...

I've stopped washing my hair every day since having it highlighted.
I now usually wash it about three times a week,but if I know I have a dirty job coming up the following day I leave it until after that,so some weeks it could be just washed twice.
Years ago,I read that washing your hair every day strips it off its natural oils,and that modern shampoo contains a lot of chemicals to create a lather,the combination of the two results in colour fading fast.

Sainnsburys sell a very good Dry Shampoo in a spray - its really great for extending the time between washes and brilliant for times that you cant wash - like if you are in hospital or ill in bed. Recommended.

I swim every day and live in the sun so my colour lasts notime ,I even wear a hat but it makes no differance , Itried buying more expensive dyes but they were allthe same ,now I just buy a cheap one and colour more often

Definately use a shampoo that prolongs the colour of your hair, Having it coloured every 6 weeks will not be good for it.
I would recomment Elvivie Colour restoring shampoo, but there are loads out there which are great...or talk to your hairdresser who should recommend treatment too.

Talking about hair colour I have to have mine done very four weeks to cover grey regrowth and its a real pain in actual fact after three weeks the white appears!! I would love to stop colouring it altogether I have asked my family and friends what they think and they all say NO that it will really age me (I'm 51) even my son (student) said 'no way' but I have straight hair and always have a good cut and keep it in a bob style. I wish I was brave enough to go for it!!! Does anyone have this dilemma what do you think? X

Breda, I could have written your post!! I am exactly the same, and it really annoys me that I have to have the roots done so often. Sometimes I wish I had the courage to just leave it, but I don't! I have a side parting and the roots are really noticeable there. In fact later this morning I am going to the hairdressers to have the roots done again, but I have also booked a new cut. Decided that if I had a few layers put in, the regrowth might not be as noticeable. But yesterday I was at ' a bit of a do' with friends, and almost all of them said I should keep my style as it is! Aaagh!!Now I don't know what to do!!!

I had my colour done just over a week ago (three different blonde tints) and already the colour has faded drastically!
If there is a solution to this I wish someone would tell me what it is. I will try the Aveda's Colour Conserve shampoo and condtioner to see if that helps!

Daughter is a hairdresser. She says it a lot depends on the quality of the colour used. Some makes are better quality and hold longer than others. It also deends on the type of hair you have, and whether it will hold a pigment - your hairdresser should be able to tell you.
And some colours don't hold as well - red is particularly bad at fading, which is why so many reds and auburns go pink. Warm browns will also fade as the red in it fades.
She says that you need to use a good shampoo, and not too much. The ones the hairdresser sells are the best as you only need to use a little drop. Same applies to conditioner. Towel dry, and use a small amount od conditioner, don't slather it on. She has been known to throw out all my shampoos, on the grounds that she didn't spend ages doing my hair for me to ruin it with cheap rubbish!
Intensive conditioners improve the quality of your hair, but as the penetrate the hair shaft they can force colour out. Use sparingly, and never leave longer han the stated time.

I use Paul Mitchell shampoo and conditioners, which help keep the colour, they are expensive but you only need to use a little of each. You get it from certain hairdressers. My hairdresser also says you need to dry the hair directing the dryer down the hair as this way the shaft of hair lies flat and the light reflects better. Always looks good when he does it!

Have to say that, though I love Aveda, and have my hair cut at their Covent Garden salon, I had to abandon their hair colouring services - the colour looked lovely, but, as I got more grey hairs, was just too 'natural' and washed out in about 2 weeks. So I went back to a great colourist at Worthington who uses, and is an expert in, L'Oreal and it lasts a lot longer. The Aveda shampoos and conditioners are very good, though.

Yes I love Aveda too, their leave in conditioner is particularly good.

for hair that shows white roots too quick (hair grows an average of 1/2 inch a month more in summer and more on naturally fair heads than dark ), why not try a lighter shade that way the differance won't look as great, also the more porous the hair the quicker the pigment washes out, so if it's already in bad nick, the hair doesn't hold it , if it we're me and I had so much white I'd have a young style and let it grow out, Young face, young style white hair= stunning just my opinion.

I think your suggestion assumes everyone's hair will grow out a pleasing shade of grey or white - and that everyone can keep it that way in great condition, upsadaisy. In fact, on many people if not coloured it becomes a salt and pepper shade which I don't personally think looks good on anyone, and certainly looks aging. I'm sticking to my colourist!
