Who can recommend a decent mascara?

Hi there, I've recently been using a Clarins mascara as I was assured by the sales girl that it would not smudge. She was sssooooo wrong, it cost a lot and was probably one of the most annoying mascaras I have used. So when the time came to replace it, I thought I would get a different brand and went through most of the 'normal' brands looking for a smudge free mascara. I got one, but after the first time of using it, I ended up with more on under my eyes than on the lashes, disaster!! It was clumpy and seemed dry. I just want a mascara that will go on easily and stay on until I want it to come off when I take it off. Can anyone recommend a brand and/or way of putting on mascara for keeps? Thanks ladies x

After too many years than I care to remember of trial and error I have now found Clinique High Definition Lashes. Half the wand is a normal brush to put on the initial sweep, the other half is a comb to make sure each lash is covered without clumps. Brilliant!

I got a sample Dior mascara the other day and the filaments of the brush are really fine, so it doesnt clump at all... I am using a YSL one at the moment which is similar, but not quite as good. Will buy the Dior one when the YSL finished. I have tried Boots, Maybelline, Max Factor, and none are as good - it tends to be the applicator which is wrong - either to thick or to spikey...and then when you put it on, it goes in clumps.

I've always blamed my mascara for smudging. But then after a posting on here, I realised it was my eye pencil.
I'm now using a different eye liner, and I apologise to all those mascaras that I have blamed

I have started having my eyelashes tinted and then just use a clear mascara for a bit of definition.
It's great, no smudging, and having it done is actually quite relaxing.

Bluebell, do your eyelashes look really black when you've had them tinted? I've got very fair lashes and have often wondered about getting them tinted, but don't know if they'd look too black (I normally wear brown mascara).

I would recommend Lancome Virtuose mascara.
I also have my lashes tinted, you can choose what colour you want black, brown black, brown, blue black................

I also dye my eyelashes and have done for years and years. It is very easy to do at home and makes a huge difference.

Mollymandy I got a sample of the Dior one a couple of months ago and just bought the full size. It's called Diorshow and I can recommend it also - it makes my eyelashes look thicker and longer.

I'm another fan of tinting my lashes, as I find any obviously 'mascaraed' look very aging. But would also like to have a good clear mascara to use when I want a bit more definition. Bluebell and others, can you recommend a good one? (I don't mind about price).

Ejane...I buy a kit, Colorsport i think it's called from Boots. I mix it and splodge it on. Take no notice of anyone who tells you that it will mark your skin...it never has mine. Any small marks come off in the bath easily. I never bother with putting vaseline around my eyes first or any of that nonsense.
It stings a bit if you get it in your eyes (!) but then i just slosh loads of water over my eyes and it's ok.
I DO prefer to have my daughter do the application for me as her eyesight is so good and there is no doubt she does a better job of it than I do. But if she's not around...and she often isn't...than I DIY. It's fine, easy, no problem, give it a go Ejane!

This year I tried MAC waterproof mascara and eye pencils - brilliant !! But you must take it off with a good remover at the end of the days, because it will make your eyes puffy and sore if you sleep in it !! (Now you know what a trollop I am !!)

I have just invested in the No 7 Stay Perfect Perfection continue. You are supposed to apply it once a day and dont need to do it again. It SO works its fab well worth the £6.

May I suggest three options?
1. Dye your eyelashes with Eyelure Dyelash colourant. It goes on with a mascara brush and lasts about ten days. No smudges and it doesn't get on your skin as it's just like applying mascara. Then curl your lashes with a heated curler. Eyelure do a good battery-operated one; like a wee biro pen with a hot end. It doesn't hurt and it works a treat. No scary metal gadgets or lost eyelashes;
2. Get your lashes professionally permed. They'll dye them first and the tint/perm lasts a month, easily. My local charges £30 and it's a very relaxing 45 mins;
3. (My new personal favourite) Use false lashes/extensions. Eyelure (again!) do great, natural individual lashes for about £4. I've been wearing these for over three weeks. I just use the short ones as the longer ones are just too Tammy-Faye for me. The great thing is that I save half an hour each morning as I don't use any mascara and, to be honest, much less make-up in general. Just be sure to use an oil-free eyemake up remover and they'll stay put. They also look great getting out of the pool/bed! Couldn't beat them with a big stick.

I really recommend Bad Girl Mascara by Benefit. It really plumps and lengthens the lashes and never clumps, but goes on really nicely and smoothly every time. It definately makes my lashes look thicker and much longer and lasts for ages. Lisa.

Hi,
I definitely recommend Estee Lauder magnascopic as the best mascara ever, its quite pricey at £16 but its the best. The 2nd best is max factor 2000 calorie, no smudges and does the job.

I use a Clinique one which only comes off with warm water. It is very good, no smudging - well worth the money.

I've used Lancome mascara now for 29 years - not the same one I hasten to add!! They do several different varieties, all fabulous it's a case of deciding the look you want.
At one time I worked in a large department store so could try pretty much every brand of make-up and product they made. It was Lancome every time, and I still wouldn't swap.

Estee Lauder "Sumptuous Bold Volume Lifting Mascara". I have sparse, thin eyelashes and this mascara is the best one I have used that really shows a difference.

I bought the Clinique one as well, and it is wonderful. Stays on all day and doesn't smudge.
My Dior one gave me much thicker lashes, but also gave me panda eyes after a couple of hours

I like MAC too and I must be a trollop too as I sometimes sleep in it, has never caused me any problems although I agree you need a good cleanser. Dare I say it - I also find all Rimmel mascara excellent and well priced.
