Do you tip your hairdresser?

Hi Ladies,

Just wondered if anyone else out there tips their hairdresser? I used to as a matter of course but over the past year or so I have got a bit braver and only tip the ones that I think do a really good job. I just wondered what the etiquette is as I get the impression that the whole helping you on with your coat thing when you leave is to give you the opportunity to tip them? I can't say I blame them as it is a really low paid job, like waitressing etc but the main difference between us brits and the rest of the world is that we don't mind tipping if a job has been well done and a good service provided (Unlike many countries who put a service charge on their bill!).

What do you all think?

I usually tip about £2, is that tight (haircut costs £40)?

cheers

dgt3

Re: Do you tip your hairdresser?

Yes, I always tip. For a £40 haircut I would usually tip £5.

Re: Do you tip your hairdresser?

I always tip dgt, have to keep them on your side, never cross a hairdresser! My hairdresser comes to the house, and does my OH and me together, so I give her £5.00, I'm not sure if that is tight or not either.

Does one tip a chiropodist? I'm never sure.

Re: Do you tip your hairdresser?

Hi dgt3

I always tip my hairdresser - but that's because I always leave the salon satisfied with what she's done. I had my hair cut and coloured with some highlights at the front yesterday and gave her a £7.00 tip which was just slightly less than 10% of what I paid.

I don't think I would tip chiropodist. I have regular massages for my achey back , I don't tip her but always buy her a nice christmas present.

Re: Do you tip your hairdresser?

I don't tip at all. My hairdresser is very good but at £50 a cut, he earns much more than I do as a teacher and I don't see why I should. As for shampooists, i think it is up to the company to pay their staff properly and not rely on handouts. I didn't realise that people were tipping so much. I do feel a bit mean as I leave, but am a loyal client of about 7 yrs.

Maybe I'm a skinflint but I have never tipped a hairdresser. I don't know but I feel embarrassed to do so. Besides, it costs me a bomb.

Re: Do you tip your hairdresser?

Dgt,years ago I would tip my hairdresser £1 no matter what the cost, but then for a £3.60 cab fare I would give the driver £5 and tell him he could keep the change. My Dad pointed out to me how I was tipping the taxi driver more for a cheap fare than I did a hairdresser - now I tip my hairdresser £5

Re: Do you tip your hairdresser?

I tip my hairdresser and also the junior who washes my hair - I think the pool the tips anyway so give them 10% between them.

That sounds a bit mean now I've seen it written down! I might have to re-think

Re: Do you tip your hairdresser?

Yes I always tip my hairdresser, but suprisingly when I think about it never the person I go to for a leg wax or mainicure. Hairdresser £5 and both ladies a christmas pressie of a bottle of their fave drink.

Re: Do you tip your hairdresser?

When the minimum wage was introduced the salon I was using at the time put up a notice apologising for the price increasing and saying it was due to the necessary wage increases. I saw an advertisement for the same salon quoting an annual salary of £25K.

Considering what it now costs to go to the hairdresser I think I pay enough without a tip on top. If i'm happy with the service I go back, if not I find somewhere else.

I am really mean...I give the stylist £1 and the shampooist£1...I didn't realise you were expected to give 10%!

Re: Do you tip your hairdresser?

I always give the hairdresser about 10% and usually £1 or £2 for the girl who has washed my hair, made coffee etc.

However I never tip my beautician (I only go for regular leg/bikini wax, and occasional facial) I think it is because she is the salon owner and I feel awkward about it. But if I ever have her staff instead of her I give them a tip.

I hate the whole tipping thing!!

Re: Do you tip your hairdresser?

I read an article last year that suggested a good stylist (i.e. a posh stylist) would be offended if he/she was tipped and to just tip the junior who washed hair, made the coffee etc.

However, I have gone to the same small salon for years and always tip the girl who cuts my hair and the junior. I don't give them much though, just £1 each - I may have a rethink.

My hair cut only costs £15 though so I suppose it's ok (I colour it myself at home).

Have some of you ladies won the lottery?? £50+ for a haircut???

Re: Do you tip your hairdresser?

I don't tip my hairdresser as he is part owner but I do the hairwasher (anything from £2 - £5). I've been with this particular hairdresser since before he set up on his own. When I had my biopsy op my hair was all matted and absolutely disgusting I couldn't wash it myself, went along to hairdressers without an appointment asked if they could fit me in for a wash only. They not only washed and blow dried it but the salon owner wouldn't let me pay and the girl who washed my hair wouldn't take a tip either. I feel an extra special tip next time I go. I don't tip the person who waxes my eyebrows etc but at Christmas I do give her £20.

Re: Do you tip your hairdresser?

I tried a new salon earlier this week and was charged £30.50 for a cut 'n' blow dry. It was ok, nothing special, but I tipped the stylist £5 "just in case" I do go back there. Her eyes and smile really widened, giving me the impression that she thought £5 was a very big tip! I just did it out of habit, but I'm going to think twice in future.

Re: Do you tip your hairdresser?

Reading this post, i've realised i'm a skinflint - i so hope my hairdresser doesn't think that but i have only been going to him for a few months now. he charges 42.50 (cash only) and the first couple of times i left him £4 and the shampooist £1 but last week I only left him £3 and I'm mortified now after seeing most of you leave £5! I have to admit I thought £42.50 was quite a lot for a haircut but then again, I hate salons and had been doing my own for quite a while. Thats it - I'm upping my tip next time.

Re: Do you tip your hairdresser?

I always tip my hairdresser £3, whether I have a cut and blow, or foils. To be honest with you, I can't afford any more
Same as my husband says, did anyone tip you when I worked in a shop, and that was minimum wage

Re: Do you tip your hairdresser?

I never tip anybody!!

Neither Mr Ding or I have ever earned a fortune (both of us below this so-called "national average") and when we have been in "service" jobs, we have never received tips for the things we do. For example, when Mr Ding worked for the supermarket "where Mum's gone" he was earning only a bit more than the minimum wage and nobody came in for their weekly shop and gave 10% extra to him!

Why should tipping apply in some low-paid jobs and not others?

Sorry to be controverial but this one gets me on my soapbox!!

Best of it, how many of us on this Forum not long ago, were complaining about our hairdressers not getting things as we wanted, and yet we still tip them.

Re: Do you tip your hairdresser?

I read this post with interest because this conversation came up at our supper club. I was the only one that did not tip.

I go to the hairdresser every 5 weeks and get my nails done every 3 weeks....my theory is that I am a regular customer come rain or shine and I think just paying them is enough. I shopped around for a hairdresser and don't go to an overly expensive one but still pay From £32 - £65 depending on what I have done. However, on saying that if ever I need something done (not by appointment) and they fit me in then I either tip or get them a box of chocs to say Thank you and I do tip my nail lady at XMAS.

Re: Do you tip your hairdresser?

I tip my hairdresser £2 -£3 for a £30 cut and blowdry - but now she owns the salon maybe I shouldn't any longer. Don't know!
There are labelled boxes for tips on the desk where you pay so no-one knows how much you put in! Only tip the junior if she's very good -some of them are awful, water everywhere and not good at shampooing!

I never tip - although I did when I was more of a regular years ago. I like to change hairdressers quite frequently nowadays, but in any case I think they charge quite a lot to begin with !

My hairdresser is excellent. I tip her £3 (every 6 weeks) and buy a small pressie at Christmas. I don't tip anyone else as my Beauty Therapist used to be my DIL!

Re: Do you tip your hairdresser?

Just got back from hairdressers and logged on to read this post. I didn't tip and don't normally now I feel a bit guilty, but have been going there for 6months and still get a good haircut so they haven't taken revenge on me...yet! After all I think £34 is a lot for a cut and blow dry but she does cut hair well.

Re: Do you tip your hairdresser?

Gosh I don't know if I should increase my tip of just stop altogether!
I normally tip about £3, rounding a £17 cut up to £20, but I must admit, I do it because I feel its expected. I have worked in retail for years, long hard hours for minimum pay, and only ever received one tip. Some kind gentleman give me £1 for carrying a heavy item out to his car as he had a bad back. When I got back and told my supervisor, she said if excepted another tip I would get the sack as it was against company policy! Surely if someone is pleased with service given and wants to tip you, it would be offensive to refuse? Sometimes i feel some firms rely on tips so that they can get away with paying the staff low wages, or maybe i am just on my soap box here.
Still not rely sure how i feel about tipping
Chris

Re: Do you tip your hairdresser?

I don't tip - no way! Getting my hair done is expensive enough as it is, and while I always go to the same salon I don't always have the same stylist so have not real 'bond' there either.

Re: Do you tip your hairdresser?

Add me to the list of skinflints, I never tip hair dressers. I had a really good hair dresser for years and he alwasy did a great job, but I was in and out of the shop in 30 mins very happy with my cut and blow dry which cost me £30.00, that's about £60.00 per hour (cash in hand as he didn't take cards or cheques!) He owned the shop and it was a little gold mine. I moved away a couple of years go and it took me ages to find a good hairdresser. I was paying as much as £45.00 for the a cut and blow dry, still out of the shop in about 30 mins and there was always someone waiting to sit in the chair after me. None of the shops would take cards so again I look at it that they could be making as much as £90.00 an hour in some cases, I might be wrong though!!

Re: Do you tip your hairdresser?

I tip 10% of the bill because I don't want them to talk about me when I leave the salon and I am a regular!!! My hairdresser is very moody and abrupt..BUT....she cuts my hair well. She's not cheap at £35 and the prices are going up next week apparently .It rankles but I'm old enough and ugly enough to know that I either put up or shut up. No point in cutting off my nose and all that.
