weird hair!!

I have just joined, although, i have been lurking for a bit reading your posts and am really impressed with the support you give to each other and all your advice and expertise . So i wondered if you can advise me on my weird hair? It has gone a bit weird in the past year or so - it has always been wavy and kinky and now it seems to have gone more curly - which i like but i'm not used to it and don't know how to manage it- i've even had people asking if i've had a perm. I'm 57 and perhaps its the aging process. does anyone else have this problem??

I have been trying to grow it longer over the summer as my last visit to a hair salon in June left we really p*****d off as he had cut it short on top and layered it - i suppose what he was trying to do was accentuate the curlyness. I went back and complained and he cut the back shorter so that the top wasn't such a contrast to the sides. But the overall effect is that it sticks up on top like a pair of horns and it looks very rectangular and seems to make my face look longer (its 2 inches below my ears).

I have made an appointment for 2 weeks from now with a really good hairdresser that i found through a friend and i am wondering what i should ask him to do - i want to accentuate the curlyness but i don't want any layers on top and my fringe drives me mad as it can be quite heavy and increase the overall rectangular look.

i look forward to hearing from you all

Re: weird hair!!

Hi Bellan

Welcome to the forum, it's so additive.

When you go to the forum ask them to show you or use straigteners on you. It's the best thing I have ever bought.
You don't have to achieve a poker straight style, but can just smooth it out a bit therefore making it a bit more manageable. Even I can make my hair behave, it look more professional when I blow dry it. Your hair does alter as you grow older, and mine's so thin but the straigteners make it look thicker.

I've bought GDH straighteners which are nearly £95 or something. GDH stands for Good Hair Day. Very expensive but I'd buy them again immediately if mine broke as they're worth it. You can buy cheaper ones but make sure they're ceramic (Boots have got loads).

ps sorry just re-read your post and it says you want to accentuate the curlyness (sorry can't help on that) but have still posted this to give you ideas. But welcome anyway.

Re: weird hair!!

Sounds to me like the old hairdresser wasn't much good. A good hairdresser should be answering these questions for you. They should look at your hair dry before they start and discuss options with you. Mine is very similar to you so I know what a nightmare it is! I ended up having long layers on top (I'm growing mine as well) which I blow dry, then I blast the lower ones to give them more curl and movement.

Also you might like to investigate some hair products. I am a big fan of Aveda and they do a range of products for curly hair which I have yet to try (I was seduced by the abundance range for thin hair which is really brilliant!).

Re: weird hair!!

thanks GYP and HollyUK
Holly i think you're right when you say the hairdresser will know what's best - its just me panicking.
GYP I tried the straighteners today to see if it helped undo the kinks etc it calms it down.

I'll have a look at aveda products for curly hair

Re: weird hair!!

I have very curly hair and I have it just below my shoulders with long layers.I have found over the years that I just do not suit it short.I had a short cut ( chin length ) a few years ago and looked like crusty the clown from the simpsons!!(ie it stuck out!)
I buy Kerastase products for curly / frizzy hair.I have also found that leaving a bit of conditioner in accentutes the curl!

Hi Bellan
youve probably had your new style by now but I have just found your post, years of H/D have proven to me that the more weight or length hair has the straighter it will be, ie gravity, likewise, remove the weight, layers or chipping in thinning etc, is to add volume ie width bulk, few exceptions are really fine/thin hair which can look sparse if too much is removed, how did it turn out, curious to know how they handled the shape, enjoy your new found curls, it happens often just needs practice
