There was a documentary on Channel Four last might about anti-ageing face creams, did anyone see it? They tested a selection of well known creams, some very expensive like Dior 'Capture' range, right down to Simple facial moisturiser which costs less then a fiver. Also tested were ranges from Olay, L'Oreal, the famous Boots Protect and Perfect, Nivea and a couple of others I've forgotten. Granted that these were tested on a very small sample of women (they didn't know what make they were using) and it was only over a couple of weeks, but not only did the scientists not find any improvement at the end of the trial, some women had worse lines and wrinkles than before! The cosmetic companies must be pretty upset by this programme - of course the companies concerned said it wasn't a proper trial, the products needed to be used for longer etc....but it kind of put me off spending money on anti-ageing creams, especially at the top end of the market - not that I do anyway. I use Dermalogica at the moment, which isn't too pricey, but I'm now wondering whether I should just use something even cheaper! One of the experts concluded that the only anti-ageing cream necessary is a good sunscreen, as it's the sun that does most of the damage.

I didn't see it, but I wish I had. I'm just about to renew my face cream - I may think twice before parting with nearly £20 and try a cheaper one this time. |

I missed the program. Didn't the BBC do something similar a while ago that concluded the Boots Protect and Perfect actually worked? I remember seeing something about samples being sold on ebay for a fortune after that. |

It didn't surprise me at all and the medics (dermatologist and plastic surgeon) repeated what I have always heard them say - protect your skin from the sun, get a face cream with SPF, use the cheapest that suits your skin without irritating. And to think I used to feel intimidated (ok, a long time ago) by saleswomen on beauty counters. I loved the former beauty editor who spilled the beans. It was a very small trial and I won't be giving up the Boots Protect and Protect serum which I bought after the BBC said it did work. I like the bounce it gives my skin and now also use the night cream. I use a tinted moisturiser with SPF10 for daytime. |

I watched that. Confirmed what I had always suspected, I'm afraid. My name is Mrs Ding and I'm a Superdrugaholic!!!

It was a bit of a shocker! I have tried lots of different creams including some at the high end of the market (La Prairie, SK11, Guerlain) and have to say that I don't think that any of them have made any diference at all. The only one I have ever rated was Estee Lauder's Resilience, but after last night's programme I think it probably had some kind of cosmetic effect rather than a long term one. Seems like it's all been a big con! |

Do you mean that pentapeptides wasn't the word on everyone's lips? ( Ad for olay or something) Anyway who changed Ulay for Olay and Marathon for Snickers and who's idea was it to change the filling in Milky Way bars ( ok a few years ago now) and Jif to Cif and why can you not get Cif with bleach anymore (the green one) I like nice smelling moisturisers but you can't even get those now because everything is fragrance free. Why can't they just leave things alone! |

This is what we've often been told, but some people persist in thinking that the more you pay, the better the result. Sorry, it just doesn't work like that with human skin. A good sunscreen, a light moisturiser, a proper cleansing at night and a healthy diet are all you need. I've never felt the need to spend huge amounts of cash on whipped-up oils with long names - "Super Nu-Retriv Plumping and Anti-wrinkling pro-Xlane enriched Day Creme" £50 please,when you can get reliable and cheaper products from Nivea or Superdrug. And don't take any notice of beauty editors, they have to toe the line as the advertisesr pay for the magazines (£60,000 for a full page ad)and hence their salaries and expenses are at risk if they promote the less expensive lines. |

I dont know if its still sold but my ex-MIL used Ponds cold cream (as it was called at the time) and her skin was absolutely wonderful even in her 70s. Also used it on her hands and she had no age spots or dry skin. I use Perfect & Protect too but I dont really think it has made much difference. Still have the wrinkles! |

I don't think beauty creams hold back the years, more the pity, they just act on our insecurity. Just good clean skin and don't sunbathe without sunscreens is the best advise. And always remember that the price of any magazine is affected by how many ads they can put into it to cover the cost. I wonder what this magazine would cost if there were no beauty adverts in it.

I know what you mean. I think they chnged Jif to Cif because in some countries it is hard to pronounce and in Italy there is no J in th alphabet, don't know why the others were changed. Face creams- I recently began to use E45 cream on my neck, it works better than anything else I've used and I find that sudocreme works wonders on my hands and keeps my cuticles tidy with no effort on my part with just one application at night. |

I have been using Boots Refine and Rewind for a year and do really think it is helping(it is a stronger version of Protect and Perfect and was recommended by a Boots assistant.) But I also take an Evening Primrose capsule daily and have for years and think that is partly what brings the "I can't believe you are seventy" remarks. Or am I being naive? Mayday |

Hi Everyone I didn't see the programme, the general jist I am getting is that no one cream is better than any other, no matter what you spend. Is this right or were there are recommended creams? Can someone please tell me? Thanks Foxie x. |

Hi the Anne. If there was a cure and something that truly worked for face lines and that stopped ones skin from aging for that matter then there wouldn't be all these creams and lotions on the market. Oh silly me there is plastic surgery I can not help thinking these creams and the like are all a con and just one big money making business I to like Spanishlady use suncream when I am out in the sun. I also use Astral cream and have since I was in my teens, I followed on from what my mum used then and still does. I don't think she or I look bad for 68 and 43 |

None were recommended. See if I can remember: Protect and Perfect, Simple moisturiser on its own, Nivea Q10, an expensive Dior (60/80 or soemthing like that), L'Oreal (the one Penelope Cruz advertises).... The docs said protect your skin from the sun, use cream with a high SPF, use the cheapest that suits your skin without irritating. They found an improvement in only one woman's skin but she was soap and water and nothing else before the trial. Most guinea pigs had more wrinkles after the month. |

dbverycherry, love the picci. You and your Mum look fab, like sisters! Celabs take note, no need for plastic surgery. Wish you both a happy day. Bel |

I think we mostly inherit our skins - hence the very young dbverycherry and dbmum. I use only retinol and vitamin C creams on my skin each morning and nothing at all at night. I alway put on the minimum amount because I believe that creams can overtake your natural oils if you overdo it. Is that why some people had worse wrinkles on the TV report? The Sunday Times magazine had an article on the back page about Dr Sebagh who has a practice in London and Paris. He uses botox, fillers and vitamin injections. "If you come to me two or three times a year at 35 or 40 I can keep your face that way for 20 years without surgery." He does not like young women (he is 53 and his girlfriend is 44) and one of his clients is 80. He sees himself as slowing down the ageing process and does not like someone who wants to change their face. I think I would like to meet this man!!! |

I use Garnier deep wrinkle A and you can see a difference for the worse when i swap to something else, during the day i have just started using an Almay SPF15 moisturiser that cost me £1.99. Tips for good skin, good food, plenty of sleep(apparently a silk or satin pillowcase helps),water, not too much alcohol and don't smoke. Oh, and be gentle with your skin, don't pull it. |

Did they really change the filling in milky ways? I have often thought that they didn't taste as good as when I was young but I thought it was my imagination! And what was wrong with the name Opal Fruits! And what happened to Five Boys Chocolate and bars of Milk Tray chocolate - a different centre in each piece of the bar. |
||||||||

|
|||||||

Emptynest you are supposed to be posting about moisturiser not chocolate! You are going to have to walk an extra mile Sunday or piggy back me, you choose! Always thought this about creams, have never paid mega bucks for them and never will, unless some kind soul wants to buy me Creme De La Mer, just want to try it once! |

I read somewhere that Joanna Lumley uses Astral moisturiser - couldn't get a better endorsement than her! And, who decided to call Marathons, Snickers? What kind of name is that! |

I am allergic to Astral It brings me out in hives! Tanya |

I've tried Creme de la Mer and hated the thick, too-rich texture actually, i think you can now get a lighter lotion). But I do love the similarly expensive SisleyA, and would use it all the time if I could afford to do so. |

My friend uses Creme de la Mer cream religiously and her skin looks great for her age. It's hard to tell though if it would look that way anyway. My sister has lovely skin and she's never used anything other than cheapie stuff from Boots. I can't imagine spending the money on Creme de la Mer but I suppose if I had enough money to throw away on it I'd give it a try. In the meantime I'm quite happy with Liz Earle. |

Anj - perhaps Creme de la mer is so expensive because its good to eat as well as put on your face. Yes, I know I'm talking about food again. |

Is Protect and Perfect part of a range, or is it an over the counter thing? Never heard of it. |

Has anyone ever heard or used anything from the Dr Pierre Ricaud range.? I buy it occasionally,and must say I'm impressed,but I don't know of anyone else who has!? |
