Do You Sunbathe Or Do You Stay In The Shade?

I for one feel great for getting a bit of sun on me.
I am enjoying this good weather we have been having here in the UK. I do sit out in the sun when I have the odd five minutes. I always wear at least a Factor 8 suncream and lately have been using Factor 15+
I have a dark olive complexion but still can go a bit pink if I over do it
Do you sunbathe or do you cover up and stay in the shaded?

Hi there Spanishlady.
You under your olive tree sounds just ideal
I have an olive tree but it would be very hard to sit under it as it is only a 1 ft high
I do how ever have a fig tree which is now five years old and is three times larger than seen here. It has begun to open out its leafs and when fully out they give a good amount of shade on our area patio. Also gives me loads of lovely juicy figs later on in the summer

Re: Do You Sunbathe Or Do You Stay In The Shade?

Hi Debbie,

I'm not a big fan of sunbathing - prefer to sit in the shade, preferably under an umbrella with a good book and a glass of wine!

Mind you, there's not much danger of getting a chance to sit in the sun today - Edinburgh is damp and drizzly and appears to be in the middle of a big cloud!

Re: Do You Sunbathe Or Do You Stay In The Shade?

I go for long walks and come back with not only shoulder strap marks but an extra diagonal mark across my chest where my bag strap was

Or at least that's what I did yesterday (despite the factor 15!)

Re: Do You Sunbathe Or Do You Stay In The Shade?

I lost myself just then thinking about sitting under an olive tree - it sounds idyllic!

As for the sun - I wish I could sit in it but as a ginger I don't stand a chance. I was only outdoors for ten minutes yesterday and I have caught the sun

I will have to remain pale and interesting

Re: Do You Sunbathe Or Do You Stay In The Shade?

Hi Debbie - I don't like sitting in the sun and would much rather be in the shade (preferably on a comfortable lounger, with a good book and a glass of something nice!). I don't mind going for a walk on a sunny day, as long as it isn't too hot, but don't like just sitting or laying in the sun.

Re: Do You Sunbathe Or Do You Stay In The Shade?

I'm very pale skinned - I catch the sun and burn very quickly despite the high factor sun lotion.

I rarely sit in the sunshine, much preferring cool shady spaces.

Definitely a sunbather, but slathered in cream and with access to the shade for when it's just too hot.

Oh I love the sun.

Only came in here for a minute to cool off!!!

It is glorious and I am sitting on the patio
drinking coffee and chilling out.
Have lots of sun protection on though.

I hope the weather continues

Re: Do You Sunbathe Or Do You Stay In The Shade?

Phew What a hot one again. I have spent most of the day outside with my factor 15 on but I wasn't sunbathing.
I have been weeding. My face is a little sun kissed but otherwise I think I covered myself well with the suncream this time
I have a friend who, like many of you who have replied here so far, is pale skinned. She isn't a beach, sunbathing type of person. She just goes pink then red if she is in the sun to much. I think she wears a factor 30 sun block and even then she still goes pink!
Hi there SusiQ and Nightingale my fellow sun bathers. I've got my mum popping over tomorrow for lunch so then I imagine we will be sitting in the sun for a bit while chatting 9 to a dozen

Re: Do You Sunbathe Or Do You Stay In The Shade?

I quite like sitting out in the sun for short bursts, or walking in the sun, but always wear sun lotion - had factor 30 on chest and factor 10 on my arms and face today. Mowed the lawn this morning, and wore a hat. Walked the dog at lunchtime, and wore a hat, but tried to stay under trees more than open fields.

I used to love sunbathing when I was in my teens and twenties, but was always careful and used sunscreen. Glad I did. My dad used to chance it and now experiences skin cancer from time to time, as does my gran.

Re: Do You Sunbathe Or Do You Stay In The Shade?

I used to be a sun worshipper - even applying coconut oil and other oils to get more brown! I just hope I got away with it as I haven't had any problems so far!

Anyway I'm much more sensible now. I like to feel the sun on me, but find I get overheated much more quickly these days. By choice it would be the Olive Tree for me and a nice cool drink, sunglasses and a good book (but I'm much too busy working and have just popped in for a break!).

However I do love to be brown - I look and feel so much better. My plan this year is to try and do it more gradually with about a factor 8/15 depending on sun strength.

Always had a tough skin and tanned easily, but it seems none of us can get away with what we used to. Besides I want to try and keep the wrinkles at bay. I have noticed that a lot of ladies who have done a lot of sunbathing seem to have very wrinkly skin, and not just on their faces! I think I'll use a touch a fake tan to acelerate the tanning process and be careful.

Re: Do You Sunbathe Or Do You Stay In The Shade?

Hi All

I prefer the shade but have recently been on hols and used factor 25 on my face. But now have a huge, I mean huge, spot on my chin which I'm sure is from the cream. One son said I was growing another head, the other recoiled in horror and my father said what's that mole on your face.

Has anyone else reacted like this? I'm sure it's from the heavy cream, it's same make as my cleaners etc!!!!!

Re: Do You Sunbathe Or Do You Stay In The Shade?

I thought today, here in the South East, where it was bright and sunny all day, how lighthearted I felt. With bright blue sky, and sparkling sun it really lifted my spirits.....but I like to sit in the shade.

Defo the shade for me wearing sun glasses and SPF of 50. The sun will age your skin like nothing else ladies. A wrinkled prune I do not want to resemble.

Re: Do You Sunbathe Or Do You Stay In The Shade?

Definitely plenty of sun cream, factor 25+ for me. I tend to use fake tan, not too much that I go orange but just enough to have a 'healthy glow' (as the adverts say).
I'm fair skinned alike some of the others and know I'll burn, and that is sooo not a good look!

Well its been sunny and cool here today, nipped into town with just a shirt on and I was back to being freezing.........
I do love the sun I'm afraid, don't lie out all day like I used to but prefer early morning and late afternoon with a good book. and when its hot the bar preferably..........

No, I'm quite fair skinned so never sit in the sun for long. I always make sure I put a good false tan on though so I look like I've been in the sun. Nothing worse that white legs sticking out the bottom of your dress.

We had a glass of wine in the garden yesterday evening and it was beautiful!!

This may sound daft but I like to sit in the shade with my lily white legs in the sun!

Have done quite a lot in the garden the last few days but I haven' burnt despite forgetting the Sunscreen, I did slather on the Aftersun though.

Psyche, I think lily white legs look fine!!! It's just my legs are shocking white and I hate wearing a skirt without first applying false tan!

Re: Do You Sunbathe Or Do You Stay In The Shade?

Here comes the sun.....I love it..lying in it and getting a tan..when I am in my 60`s and all leathery and wrinkly covered in melanomas I will think back to my days of sunbathing and regret every minute of it.....In fact when I came in yesterday after an hour lying in it...and saw my face I was shocked...freckles and red.... I did vow then to move onto the false stuff...before it is too late!!!...

It is really so dangerous...but I like a tan...false from now on!!!!!....

Re: Do You Sunbathe Or Do You Stay In The Shade?

I love to get a golden tan and still do this naturally.

Being serious for a minute I do agree with you Duffy and others here.
yes it can be dangerous to be in the sun to long and damaging if too done often but like with all things if ones does it to much or to often it normally turns out to be harmful one way or another.
I seem to recall that doctors said it is good to get a bit of sun now and again on ones body to boost ones immune system and cells.

I was reading on Sunday in The Times about those poor children in Austria who had never seen the life giving sun shine. the two that were kept and lived in the basement of a house never saw the light of day for years and until now.

I do go out in the sun but clothes of course, wearing cream, and with sunglasses and I try to stay out of it and in the shade around mid day.

As the saying goes 'Mad dogs and English men go out in the mid day sun!'

Re: Do You Sunbathe Or Do You Stay In The Shade?

Not easy to stay out of the sun here but if out in it for any length of time I alway put factor 50 on the nose and over any moles, SPF 15 or higher elsewhere and always use moisturiser with SPF15.

Love the sun but hate being hot and sweaty so July and August aren't my favourite months here as it's nearly always too hot to enjoy. When I move the lounger around my OH always says "there she goes legs in the sun, head in the shade" which probably sums up the way I sunbathe

Re: Do You Sunbathe Or Do You Stay In The Shade?

I have lived in Africa and Australia and I have seen what sitting in the sun can do to our skin. My advice is just don't do it....it's not worth it. Skin cancer is a killer and it comes on later in life so you can't see the damage you are doing now but you will pay later. Sorry to put you in the shade.

i used to love to sunbathe and went really brown.... a few years ago I burnt my legs and they went all shiny....now they will not tan at all....can anyone explain why???

I tan (using factor 15/20) down to my knees and my feet but nothing between my knees and ankles ....i do look odd ....will my skin ever be normal or have I ruined the pigment???

Re: Do You Sunbathe Or Do You Stay In The Shade?

Definitely shade for me. In fact I have a problem with heat because it really makes my mind go "fuzzy" and I can't cope until I feel cooler. No-one understands so I have endured endless very hot sunny holidays with other people whose idea of heaven is to lie on a sun lounger all day. I have white legs too Psyche but my daughter put me on to fake tanning creams and they really make them look better.

Re: Do You Sunbathe Or Do You Stay In The Shade?

I can relate to feeling 'fuzzy' in the heat, issi. Although I like the sunshine and warm weather, I don't like the heat. I much prefer cooler temperatures and feel as though I am on top of things more so when it is cooler. I also find that the heat saps me of all my energy. Holidays in very hot temperatures do not appeal to me at all.

Re: Do You Sunbathe Or Do You Stay In The Shade?

i do think a nice golden tan makes me look healthier. i normally use factor 30 at the beginning of a foreign holiday coming down to a 15 (i'm quite fair skinned). i usually use factor 15 when out and about in this country. being a nurse i have seen some of the problems the sun can cause - however on monday, i was having lunch in the garden minus my lotion (cupboard in utility room now empties when you open it things also get lost in it)fell asleep as i was night shift and now i am walking around doing a good impression of a lobster!

Jax ouch that sounds sore and painful.
Sun cream goes fast in this house and we have a cupboard just like that to! Still I do try to put some on every time I am out there in it even if it means using some of my daughter's. She, lucky for me, has hers always neatly placed in her make up draw

I adore the sun and guess I'm lucky enough to tan quite easily, aslong as I don't over do it...lobster isn't a good look for me! But I'd love to be able to achieve a wonderful looking fake tan. Has anyone achieved it? I buy all the new creams and lotions, that promise I will look golden and healthy, but somehow I always end up streaky or orange or worse..both!!!
