Braved Primark today. Came out with cheap & I think good bargins....

I braved a rather crowded Primark today but survived and came out with cheap but I feel good bargains....

OH wanted a couple of their beige cotton Chinos trousers to wear while on his work trip to LA, he is leaving for LA mid day tomorrow.
So off I dutifully toddled to our local Primark.
I was good at first and went straight for and got the two pairs of trousers OH had asked for.

But I also got distracted by the loads of stock just in After doing a dash from one rail to another and queuing for a bit I came out with rather more for myself
A navy dotty dress - £10 and 2 summer tops - £1 each 100% cotton, patterned vest top £3 100% cotton, a couple of bright coloured 80% cotton 3/4 sleeved jumpers a £6 each.

Have you bought any bargains recently?
Are you like me and happy to get a bargain and shop in the lower end of the market shops or do you prefer designer shops and labels?

My OH is " Man at Primark" He always buys casual trousers there. On a recent trip to the USA my boys persuaded him to buy a nice quality Ralph Lauren jumper which promptly stretched and we have never heard the end of it.

Re: Braved Primark today. Came out with cheap & I think good bar

I enjoy a good look round Primark but have to go early in the day when the shop is tidy - I can't bear it when it's busy and the queues for the changing rooms and the tills are a mile long.

The pyjama bottoms at £4 a pair are brilliant value as are the £1.50 't' shirts. At the moment I've also got 2 pairs of their £4 leather flip flops that look as though they should cost an awful lot more, a striped cardi and a plain green one. The £2.50 mens polo shirts are excellent and my son has had several of their sweaters, none of which have cost more than £6 - some of them have definitely been better than others wash wise but on the whole I've got no complaints.

The shower curtains at £4 are a really good buy if you can find a colour/pattern that suits - although they've just changed the top so that they now clip around the rail rather than fit on a hook. At one time I was buying the plain white striped shower curtains which were selling for £15 in M & S and were exactly the same. I know because I bought the M & S ones first time round.

Perhaps I'm opening a can of worms here but is it just me that feels a little uncomfortable when I hand over my money? I know that the remedy is in my own hands but I can't help but wonder who makes the things they sell and what sort of wage they receive for doing so.

You do wonder how they can sell stuff at those prices without anyone being harmed in the making. I am never quite sure what view to take. Should they have fair trade labels? I buy fair trade goods but there are the sceptics who say it serves no purpose. I think it is better to do something, after all as the billion pound earning tesco says "every little helps"

I'm with you Duckegg. The only time I can bear Primarni is first thing in the morning when the stuff is still on the hangers!

Sorry but I would prefer to forego the 'lots of cheap bargains' and have one or two quality items. I am sure if you added up all of your inexpensive items you buy you could buy ONE really good item that lasts years and years, unless of course you are a fashion follower in which case buy cheap and throw away at the end of the season !!

Hi there Jewels. No need to be sorry we all have different view and ideas on clothes.
Each one knows what we like to buy and wear. I do have one or two items from Karen Millen that I have bought for say a wedding or party.
On the whole I buy at the lower end of the market and couldn't personally face paying out over the odds for the sake of just a known fashion label being in a jumper or beach top. Many of these cheaper clothes last me over two seasons and I am more than happy with the quality.
The amount I have spent today on clothes wouldn't even have bought me one item in Karen Millen!
I really do feel I have got myself and OH truly many good bargains today
Even some celebs, with plenty of £££'s no doubt, have been known to pop into Primark and grab a bargain
May be its having a daughter who's a London College of Fashion student that keeps me up to date and a dedicated follower of fashion.

dbverycherry, what a lovely photo of you and your daughter, and the dress you bought at Primark looks really pretty. We are about to have a Primark in Derby very shortly, there used to be one three or four years ago but for some reason they moved to Leicester. I have bought a few things from there but really cant bear the mess that is sometimes in there it really puts me off. I have bought a couple of bags from there (big ones) and some knickers which were quite cheap and lasted quite a while.

On the whole when I can I would rather pay a little bit more plus a lot of their fashion is very young. I still like to see what is on offer though.

I also would like to know if they pay the people who work in these factories a realistic wage, it does make you think. Plasmo xx

Well done , fab finds! I very rarely go in Primark, but may make an effort to "nip in". And don't go in Karen Millen very often, just gaze in the window. (Although I did venture in a few times when I visited New York.....well you have to make the most of the exchange rate!!!)

Just to say if any one remembers my Primark pants thread sometime ago........

I purposely did not wash one pair of pants from the set of three. I measured all three pairs against each other and they were all the some size. I have washed and worn two pairs and they have shrunk by about 2 inches. The cotton is not as soft as M&S either. I am keeping them just to use as extra holiday pants. After that I have a feeling Mr F. will be using them as car polishing cloths.

I also have an uncomfortable feeling about how the clothes can be so cheap.

ps I never found the Primark trousers pants in my local Primark either!! This was despite asking sales assistants.

Re: Braved Primark today. Came out with cheap & I think good b

Hi there Foxie and others who have added to this post.

To me it seems, and may be rightly so, that every time fashion and clothes prices are mentioned on these forums the thread turns to low paid workers.

I did watch a program the other day on clothes being made for pennies with interest. I recall it wasn't just places like Primark that were paying low wages but a well known mens designer etc were just as bad on NOT paying, what we in the UK and Europe, consider a decent wage.

A while back I did say on a thread over this very issue that I do worry a little and wonder what peoples wages are for making such cheap clothes
Any industry, be itthe car, clothes or computers tend to farm out work to cheaper places like India. I know as IBM, who my OH works for here in the UK, transfered some of their call centers and work load out to India a few years back. The average wage there is far below our basic one here.

To me the cost of clothes in say M&S compared to Primark is fairly big I feel. Also do M&S pay higher wages to the workers for marking them or just make more profit? Does anyone know for sure?

The world is an unfair place thats for sure.

I'm still happy with my bargains from Primark and when they do fall apart I will recycle them. I support and sometimes buy from Oxfam and other such charity shops.

Personally I try, in my own small way, to make a difference to the unfairness of this world and its uneven placement of food and wealth. But can what we do make a difference surely this is down to the big guns and world rulers and leaders of our world?

My daughter introduced me to Primark and I found a skirt I liked, then bought it in all 4 colours!
