Fake Tans...which is best?

It's all this talk about sitting out in the sun that has really got me thinking. Like most of you lovely ladies, I used to sit in the sun and fry! However, I can only sit for a while now and my face has deleloped quite a lot of freckles over the years...which seem to be growing (hubby has even noticed it so it must be obvious!).

Last year, I tried Johnson's Holiday Skin Body Lotion, which seemed OK. What would you all recommend...both for body and face?

For me St Tropez is the best, and my daughter even though a student would rather go without her M & S meals for this one but she has recently tried Tesco's own and is impressed, this from a "Princess" is praise.

I use Dove Summer Sun and really like it - although I only go for a light tan - don't want to look like I've been tangoed! It goes on easy, smells nice and doesn't stain clothing. My daughter uses St Tropez when she is going clubbing etc but it seems a bit of a palaver to put on. I have to do her back and it takes ages to blend in although the result looks good.

Agree with bonnieblooming that dove is worth trying, have tried quite a few and this one looks very natural and doesn't have a cloying smell.
Having said that sat out for an hour this afternoon with my book and don't think I need a top up......

I recently asked a similar question and got quite a few replies so you might like to have a look at that (sorry don't know how to show you how to find it!). On a cautionary note I am currently the proud owner of legs that look like I have been paintballing with fake tan courtesy of Lancaster Water Bronze Spray!! It's supposed to be fab but take my advice and give it a wide berth!! Has anyone had any success with fake tan on super-white legs that never tan? I don't have much trouble anywhere else but it looks like my legs are destined to be streaky forever:(

Personally I prefer an 'instant' tanner rather than 'fake'. The one I use is Rimmel Sun Shimmer. There is one for legs and another for face and body, different shades, I use golden (for legs) and Light Shimmer for face and body.

The advantage of these is that you can see it as you apply and it washes off. Not expensive, and even cheaper at Tesco at the moment 'cos it's buy one get one free!

Must admit, I've only ever tried a fake tan once - St Tropez done at a salon and boy did I feel tangoed! I am naturally very pale skinned and don't tan easily at all (my legs never, ever even change colour let alone tan!

), but the St Tropez made me look very unnatural indeed, so since then I've tried those creams that do you gradually - Johnsons, Nivea, Avon, L'Oreal, Garnier etc. etc. but I'm afraid I just can't find one that doesn't end up smelling horrible after a while - they smell lovely to start with, but then seem to change after a while.

I become really conscious of being near anyone cos of the 'pong' so have given up on them too.

Does anyone have any idea of any that don't actually give off that nasty chemically smell??? I would love to have a bit of colour this year - or do I have to stay 'pale and interesting'??

I've heard a lot of good reports about Fake Bake though I have never tried it myself.

I like solait Glam legs
I cant use fake tan as I always streak (yes I do exfoliate beforehand)
Solait is soo easy
Just shake it spray and rub in and it just washes off
I have nasty scars and marks on my legs and it covers them really well!

Glitterqueen, Fake Bake is good, just a bit of a bind to apply-the original one that is. There is an airbrush one now though, but it is quite expensive. It seems as though it's not just me who has problems with lily white legs and fake tan. Does anyone have the secret??!!

Gok Wan suggested Make Believe Tan Extender last year, which I bought. Its very gentle so you can build your tan up over several days and doesn't smell too much.

I found it in John Lewis for �21 but it's cheaper than a foreign holiday!

I much prefer the 'gradual tan' products when I'm doing it myself as there is less scope for things going wrong.This year am using an old favourite on my face, Clarins' Radiance-Plus self-tanning cream/gel (which I've used in summer for 3 years or so)and trying Clinique's new Gradual Tanning moisturiser on my arms. Happy with the results so far.

I dont have much luck with fake tans either, my face is ok but the reat of me just looks patchy and streaky, I do the exfoliator bit too, but I have tried loads of them and they all do the same.

I bought L oreals Sublime one from Tesco the other day and guess what, yes, blotchy, streaky and I am not impressed.

I think that see the colour ones that wash off are probably best for me.

There is a review of fake tanning products in today's Daily Mail. Of the 10 they reviewed, the one that came out top was Clarins Delicious Self Tan - says it's easy to apply and quick to absorb and gives an instant golden glow. It's quite expensive though - �19.50.

Only use it on my legs. Sally Hansen stocking cream is good. goes on very well and washes off in the shower but does'nt rub off on clothes.

I tried the Olay one and the smell was shocking. The Garnier Summerbodies is good, smells pleasant too.

mjm, I am like you, have never had any luck with them at all. I tried an Estee Lauder product for the face, I looked worse after it than before. Someone else recommended a really inexpensive brand, I think it was Seventeen from Boots, I havent tried it, but the person who recommended it looked really good. Plasmo x

I still like Tesco's own brand, never had it streak yet and it's a good colour.
What is that about with the white legs, I suffer too. They are the part that's covered up most of the time ergo you would think they would be more vulnerable, but no. I can fry the rest of my body and still advertise bleach via my legs. I had an embarrassing moment on the beach in Monaco, a french lady insisted on walking by and pointing out loudly "madame rouge, madame rouge" she clearly wasn't looking at my legs.
And nail polish...has anyone else found that it can stay put on toes for ages, despite rubbing against shoes all day, while the carefully attended finger nails chip and splinter within hours?

The one I have used for sooooooo long is the Ambre Solare Fake-Tan....I ues it as a moisturiser then a little foundation on top {after it has 'dried' a bit}....I have tried other brands but have always gone back to my Ambre.....Also no smell and its a fabulous moisturiser...

I have just tried the Garnier No streaks spray (not sure if that is the exact name) that was reviewed by Gok's team and I think with practice it will be fine. As you can't see where you have sprayed I did manage to miss a couple of bits when I tried it on my legs yesterday, but I was pleased with the colour and I think if I pay more attention when I am spraying next time it will be fine. There are two levels of colour I think and I used the lightest.

When I have had St Tropez tans at the salon in the past I have always asked them to dilute the colour with moisturiser and haven't ended up being "tangoed".

The Garnier tan smells fine when you are applying it, but eventually reverted to that nasty fake tan smell so will apply it in the evening next time. I read somewhere that Patsy Palmer (from East Enders) markets a fake tan under the name Palmer Cutler that is intended for redheads so the colour isn't too intense but I have never seen it in the shops so I have no idea how expensive it is.

I find the Dove gradual tanning lotion never has or develops an unpleasant smell. Worth a try, Morrisons and Sainsburys were doing 2 for 1 a while ago - it also comes with factor 15 which is v. handy if you fancy topping it up with some natural sunlight (you'd have to find it first of course!!!)
