Wedding invite to evening reception - what to wear???

Help!! Have received an invite to evening reception of good friend that I've not seen for many years. What to wear is my main problem as have not been to a wedding for a few years and am out of touch. Wedding is in July. Am 44 yrs old, size 14, but with a bit of a 'muffin' waist (am hoping to lose some weight btwn now and event!). Am also restricted by budget, so if buying new outfit it will have to be useful more than once. Currently own a pair of pale blue, wide leg linen mix trousers from Principles but would need to buy a top to compliment/go with - any ideas gratefully received! Gill

The sales will be on in June so you might grab a bargain. Perhaps you could ask your friend what kind of evening it will be. If very dressy, you might be able to get a reasonably priced long skirt that is not too eveningy so could also be worn during the day. Or you could always dress up your blue trousers and new top with sparkly jewellry.

Re: Wedding invite to evening reception - what to wear???

My only suggestion is to dump the idea of trying to loose weight between now and then!!

What's wrong with a size 14?? Perfectly normal and attractive.

Buy a gorgeous outfit you like and feel good in now and look forward to wearing it, rather than fretting about loosing weight between now and then (and let's be honest, how many people do actually loose the weight they want to within a couple of montsh?)

I don't mean to sound negative, but I'm sad of hearing of women who worry about loosing a few pounds for an event, rather than looking forward to it.

Buy something gorgeous and have a WONDERFUL time. (don't forget to get some lovely underwear and new perfume ... you'll look GORGEOUS!!)

Get a snazzy, dark top with a shawl or pashmina to ward off the evening breezes

Agree with susieblue - you need to know if the day guests have been asked to glam up, that will set the tone of the evening.

If you can wear your trousers, which sound lovely, then why not a nice kaftan style top perhaps with some beading around the neck. I love this type of look and it doesn't matter what's going on underneath!! A nice pair of sparkly sandals, pretty little bag and some great earrings and you'll be good to go.

Love the sound of the blue linen trousers. They would match well with a slightly fitted jacket or cardigan (any colour really), a nice scarf and some cheap and chearful jewellery. Defintaely nothing wrong with size 14 - I'd be happy with it - and it's all about having a great time and celebrating a marriage. Enjoy and let us know what you chose in the end.

I have got some linen trousers and Nougat make some stunning tops, I have one with 3/4 sleeves and it drapes at the sides hiding muffin top. Get some big big jewellery and some high heels. Stunning. The top looks good for evening or day wear .

Agree with everyone else's idea of getting a dressy top. I am sure you will be sitting down for part of the evening and the top of you is what most people will see.

There is some lovely jewellery in TopShop which is very 'on trend' as W&H fashion pages would say! Buy or borrow a little sparkly evening bag too to finish your outfit off. Have a great time.

Re: Wedding invite to evening reception - what to wear???

Thank you all so much for your replies - I totally agree, there is nothing wrong at all with being a size 14, (after 3 sons I feel lucky that I am still a size 14!)it's just the 'muffin' top that gets me down - need to tone up big time! I like the sound of a darker top & pashmina to go with the light blue trousers, will see what I can find. Thanks once again!

If its only the muffin top that's the problem, what about magic knickers? I got some high waisted ones from Marks and they took pounds off my tum.

I always think it's so much easier to look glamorous in the summer.

I think a good false tan is a must, as it always makes you look and feel good. A dress which is a good cut in a colour that really flatters your complexion would be great (you might be able to pick something up in the sale at Monsoon). A stunning necklace to compliment the outfit and the best shoes you can afford, and you're away!!

(I would stick with a fairly plain dress if I was going to go for an elaborate piece if jewellery though)

You can’t go wrong!

Good point - a professional salon fake tan and ditto pedicure are two 'musts' for me before summer weddings or similarly dressy events (as well as making sure hair cut and colour and eyelash and brow tinting are up to date). I also agree that an outfit can easily be either completed or updated with the right jewellery, strappy shoes, and a pretty bag of the sort so easy to find nowadays in Accessorize, etc.

Sparkly caftan with your linen pants.
