I am on medication and have been for quite a while. But I know that losing weight and regular exercise are the key to try and avoid medication - as long as you consult your doctor first of course.

Re: high blood pressure

Hi tegan, and welcome! I have high blood pressure too - some advice here
http://www.patient.co.uk/showdoc/23068761/
I have always been described as being borderline as to whether need to take medication or not. Just before Christmas I was fitted with a monitor that I had to wear for 24 hours and it took my BP every 30 mins. This was to give a true indication of my BP, or do I suffer from 'white coat syndrome' ie BP rises when in the Doctor's surgery.
I will get the result next week, but my feeling is as much as I would rather not take medication if I need it then so be it.

What a thrill it is to get a reply - thank you. White coat syndrome could be my problem also although I have had quite a stressful time recently. I had bp taken before christmas and docs said it was up a bit. I will be going back next week but I am worried that she puts me on meds. I am sure worrying about it does not help I also find that if I get a wee twinge e.g. indigestion etc I am beginning to think it is my heart. sorry for going on but I am just so glad that there are people out there reading my story. thank you thank you

Tegan,if you are overweight definitely try to do something about it and ,as has already been said, increase your exercise levels.Doing this brought my blood pressure right down. White coat syndrome definitely sends mine up too! Good luck Decx

Thank you - I may be a few pounds overweight but not too much although I plan to loose this. Looks like being more active should help. thank you so much

Re: high blood pressure

Just called Drs surgery for result of my BP monitoring, and it was a 'balanced' result - so no medication for me! Maybe ask if you can be fitted with a 24 hour monitor before accepting medication?

Re: high blood pressure

Definitely a healthy diet and taking exercise can have a dramatic effect on blood pressure and is preferable to medication if it is possible as the statins can have awful side effects. If you have white coat syndrome then definitely a 24 monitor will give a better and more accurate reading.
best wishes.

There's a book, paperback, titled High Blood Pressure, Diet Against It by Dr. James Scala which gives good guidelines.
I have to be on medication though as otherwise mine's sky high.
When I had the 24 hour monitor, I found that I was quite anxious at first but as the day wore on found I reacted the other way & relaxed when it started up! The worst part is trying to sleep in the thing overnight.
