I know it's silly, but I'm scared....

Hello ladies,
Ive been very brave all day but falling apart a bit right now. Tomorrow I have to go into the Spine Centre here for a 'denervation'. I had one once before, so I know what to expect, but that doesn't seem to help! I should be used to this kind of thing, but instead of getting easier, it seems to get harder. They inject into a nerve in your spine and then pass a probe down the needle and laserburn/kill off the nerve. Aparantely in UK, USA etc., they sedate you, but here in Germany, they just expect you to climb up onto the bed, have the procedure, then climb off and go home..
I'm trying to avoid yet another big operation, and this is def worth another try. It's only very painful briefly... then I go home to rest for a couple of days, when it's not very good, but I can manage. Then-hopefully- slowly the pain levels start to decrease. Please please keep your fingers crossed for me...... I'm feeling such a scaredy cat

Expat you are not silly, and I also think that when you have had to go through lots of medical procedures and surgery etc, far from it getting easier, it gets worse. You just get fed up of going to hospital, and you also know what's coming up. Thinking of you and hoping it is all over as quickly as possible. make sure you get some rest afterwards.

No way are you a scardy cat ! i would be scared as well,can you ask for some sedation or something, sounds a bit cruel without anything ? Good Luck,take care,x

ExpatK, you are not silly - I think it's natural to be very nervous of medical procedures and the pain - knowing what to expect doesn't make it easier. I will think of you before they knock me out tomorrow and meanwhile am sending you a big hug and love and best wishes.

I was scared just reading your description Expat, remember take big deep breaths in threw the nose out thru the mouth, to help you relax.

ask them for some gas and air (entonox) and suck it in as if your life depended on it 30 seconds later you won't mind what happens!
What about taking some prophylactic analgesia before you go?
or if you have had children remember your breathing exercisies and focus your mind on those to help you through. I think it is very normal to be scared the very word needle does it for me so by comparision you are a hero!
Good luck and just look forward to getting back home tomorrow evening. Hopefully it will be easier than you think

Ohhhh ladies, you are so kind to me, thanks loads. It means a lot to know that you have all taken the time to wish me well. I am a lucky girl. Feeling quite sick at the moment, but we are just setting off now, so thank goodness it will soon be over.

Well, here I am, back again. Don't know whether to be happy or sad..... I didn't have it! Bit of an admin mix-up at the hospital, I have to go back on Dec 5th for it. They had booked me in for an ordinary out-patient appointment by mistake
(So much for the famous German efficiency.... although I have to say that they are usually very efficient).
Anyway, thanks for all your positive thoughts and good wishes, can I push my luck, and ask you all to do it for me in a couple of months??!!

Youn might try using a positive thinking/healing tape over the next couple of months. Some of them, particularly the hypnotic ones can help you recreate a sense of wellbeing during difficult moments.

I read your post very late last night Expat so decided to send you a "happy" message after it was all over. Never mind, try to take your mind off it for a while. Whenever I feel scared at something which has to be done I always remember my father telling me to be brave. He is one of the most courageous people I know so when he says it I know he understands what fear is.
