Cataract Operation
|
I am due to go for an operation on a cataract behind my eye and wondered if anyone else had any experience of this? I was born with cataracts behind (not in front) both eyes, but only one eye is affected with restricted vision in it. The other eye has always been excellent. My 'good' eye is now being affected by the cataract behind it so I have got to have it removed. As I have very little vision in my other eye I am extremely worried because if anything goes wrong with the op I'll end up virtually blind. I know I have to have the op at some time, but to be honest I'm so scared I keep putting it off! People keep telling me it's nothing to worry about and it's done all the time, but it's not their eysight that could be affected. I have an absolute dread of not being able to see properly - never to read a book, drive, watch the TV - makes me go cold just to think about it. Am I being stupid to be so scared?

Snoopy no you are not being stupid, it is completely natural to be nervous.
I dont know about your particular condition but I had a cataract operaton about three years ago. The worries you have are exactly the same as those I had (and I expect everyone else who has this operation). It's actually one of the most common operations carried out in hospitals.
I had mine under local (eyedrop) anaesthetic and the whole thing was completed within about 15 minutes. My Consultant did warn me of the dangers (as I expect yours has too). As a consequence I followed the aftercare instructions to the letter. He stressed to me that infection is the cause of most problems and these generally occur when people either fail to use the antibiotic drops afterwards or simply fail to ensure rigourous hygiene.
Do you know yet when you are having the operation?

Of course you are not being stupid, anything that could possibly affect your eyesight is enough to make anyone nervous.
I hope I can make you feel a little happier about the actual op. I am the biggest coward out believe me, and I was filled with so much horror at the thought of this op. I had both eyes done and had implants put in straight away.
There was no need at all to be frightened, I didnt feel a thing, it was relatively quick, straight forward, the consultant, explained every single detail to me as he was doing the op. Everyone is told prior to the procedure that there could be a possible problem but that is the same for every op it is just a procedure. I have never known anyone have any problems.
Honestly Snowy, I would have that done again rather than go to the dentist to have a filling.

Thanks for that Glitterqueen.
No, don't know when I'm having it done. Consultant said to get in touch when I was ready to go on the list. I was due to go on holiday when I saw him, so put him off for the time being. (Coward!!) To be honest, think I wouldn't be so scared if my other eye was ok, but the little I can see out of it would just about enable me to walk around without bumping into things - that's about it.
Consultant also told me it was slightly more complicated because it was right at the back of the eye not like a film over the front.
I know I'm a 'grown-up' and should be mature about all this, but I just can't help being worried about it!

Hello Snoopy2 - of course you're not silly to be feeling nervous, I think anyone would be in your situation. I haven't any experience of cataract apart from the fact that my Mum has had both eyes done, quite some time ago now and her eyesight - at 80! - is much better than mine!
I do think that the more information you have, the better prepared you'll be.
I do hope everything goes well for you.

not silly at all we are all nervous about our eyes ,
I had a similar op to the normal cataract one to correct my sight and I have never regretted it , I was sooooooooooo nervous before but it was just a local anaesthetic and 15 minutes late I had 20 /20 vision .
google all the info on the net and them you can make your decision
