Hello girls hope you are all enjoying the sunshine. Anyone out there had the misortune to have an underactive thyroid? How was it treated? I went to the docs yesterday and when I told her what my symptoms were she was pretty sure that I have the above. Looked on the net of course and am amazed at just how manyof te symptoms I have. Bloods being done soon but just wondered if anyone had any advice? Thanks

Hi Suzy I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid about 5 years ago and was then suprised to find out many other people I know have it (well, 2 others but....) Anyway it's treated by taking tablets daily for the rest of your life which is a bit of a bind but in the great scheme of things isn't too bad and the upside is, because it's hormonal (?) all your prescriptions for everything whatever it may be are free (I don't have anything else - fingers crossed - long may that last). You have to have a blood test once a year to see if the level of tablets needs upping but apart from that the biggest nuisance is remebering to get the repeat prescription!! I do think I have more energy since I've taken the tablets, or at least I don't get that dreadful lethargy so much, but I still find it really hard to lose weight but that's probably an age (mid life) thing as much as anything. Anyway, don't worry too much- it's a nuisance but ok. PM me if you want to talk about it more. Good luck |

I have an underactive thyroid as well- about 3 years now. Pretty much as Aprilsland says. As long as you keep popping the pills you will be okay. Think it is better to have an underactive than over active one. Easier to treat. Bunnygirl |

Husband was diognosed with this about 3 years ago. He was very grumpy bless him, until they started treating it. One thing I will say, it can take time to get the dosage just right - I think H could do with a boost as he is still carrying the weight around despite exercise. As Bunnygirl so rightly says, better this way around - a relative of mine had over-active and it was a complete pain. Take care, |

I'm an 'underactive' as well, but have coped really well since I've been on the tablets - too many years to remember! I first thought I was going through an early menopause, so the doc took bloods and found out it was the thyroid. So once that got sorted, the 'change' came a few years later, but I sailed through that with HRT for 5 years. The doc didn't tell me when she put me on that it would just delay the symptoms! However, I am coping with gradually reducing hot flushes - I think it helps to have the thyroxin tablets to even things out a bit. So, don't worry - just keep popping those little pills and you'll soon feel better. Best wishes, Barbara |

i have been underactive for around 6 years now, my mum had the same, one of my sisters, and two of her daughters have it and we are all on 150mcg daily. It's a pain having to remember to order repeat perscriptions, my weight has only just started creeping on and i hate it, after being slim all my life. |

Hi Snowy I have had a permanently swollen throat for the last 3 months, really really tired all the time despite much sleep, flaky nails and of course weight gain when I have always been slim. I put that down to the dreaded M as I had a full hysterectomy a year ago but it doesn't matter what I eat or how much I exercise it just keeps coming! Actually haven't done much exercise at all lately as I am just too tired. Oh and my memory is rubbish - correction more rubbish! |
