Root canal

Has anyone had root canal work done through an existing crown? I only had a new crown (£325) put on 6 months ago. Now I need a root canal filling through the crown. If the ceramic shatters I will have to pay for another new crown as well! The dentist can't do it on NHS as it's too complicated. I can't just have the tooth out as the one next to it looks like it will need a root canal filling as well in the near future.

i have had a couple of root canals, but both BEFORE my crowns, why do you need it done?

I had to have my crown taken off to do my recent root canal. It is horrifically expensive. The crown was done 8 years ago by a different dentist and I gather, although nobody will actually say it, that food has gotten underneath the crown and rotted the remaining tooth. They took the ceramic one off - that was fun. Then appraised it - by dropping ice onto the nerve- 3 TIMES! I was sent to an endontist. This took 2 trips and $2300-00 (sorry, don't know the pounds)! The ceramic tooth was damaged and fell off 2 days after the final treatment....I bit it and am now getting a new crown. I am endeavouring to sell either OH or D to pay for it!! Good Luck!

Any tooth treatment is expensive, I was reading in the paper that lots of people don't go to the dentist regularly and I am sure the cost and the lack of NHS dentists contribute to it.
I am in the middle of implant treatment. I am going to have the implant inserted on 29 September (1 1/2 - 2 hours in the chair and ££££ from the wallet). I have crowns, fillings etc. but I don't want to have toothache or gaps, so what is the alternative.

I had the old crown replaced 6 months ago because there was some decay under it and it was 20+ years old.
Last week I had terrible tooth ache which spread to my neck and ear (was on holiday and visited emergency dentist. He gave me antibiotics which have made it bearable).
Saw my own dentist yesterday and he says he can either take the tooth out or do a root canal to save it. Apparently he can't do it NHS because they don't allow enough time and the eqipment to do it. It will take 1 and a half hours!! He can't take the new crown off for danger of breaking it, but hopes to drill through it to remove the nerves.
With the pain I had last week he could have chopped my head off and I wouldn't have cared but now but I'd like to save as many teeth as I can.

Hi I was wondering what you thought about implants as i am worried if i have them i will still worry about losing my teeth

Welcome to the forum. I am in the middle of implants at the moment. The treatment sounds awful, but I promise, hand on heart it has not been painful.
I had a cap which came out and the post was broken and could not be repaired. The first stage was removing the tooth root and then letting that heal. I just followed the instructions, do not touch area with your tongue, gargle with salt water, do not eat on that side and it has been ok. In September I am going to have an implant post inserted in the gum. There will be several small stitches which I have to have removed and then it is left for about 6 months to allow the bone to grow around it. Then a cap impression will be taken and a new cap made and put in. It is not a speedy process or a cheap one, but as it is a tooth at the side which shows when I smile, I have decided to go ahead. I have confidence in my dentist though!

Sorry Susanb but what your dentist is saying is rubbish; what he means is it's not ecomically viable for him to be doing a root treatment for you when he could be doing more expensive things for other private patients.
I would question why you need it so soon after having a crown - if there was any doubt as to the health of the tooth, he should have done it during the original crown prep, I would have thought.
I would try to find a good nhs dentist if I was you. Word of mouth recommendations are best. (I know, they are rare, but there are some out there!)
