Curves Gym

Hi
I am thinking of joining Curves, but I wonder if anyone out there knows how much it costs? Their websites are very vague and I would like to know before I approach them.
If you have any feedback on your experience I would appreciate that also.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Curves Gym

Hello Helski
Curves are fun! It about £29.00 a month plus an initial joining fee - they have various incentives to get you to join and not have to pay the full fee! Definitely no lycra - wear what you are comfortable in. Best thing is to go along to your local curves and have a chat with them - they are all very friendly and it works - may not have lost lbs but have inches!!

Re: Curves Gym

Thanks - still thinking about it but I do need to tone up especially my tum and upper arms. A little nervous about signing up and then not going. Do you find it a friendly environment? I know this may seem pathetic but I belong to a gym before and I think it cost me about £200 for each length of the pool the amount of time I used it!!

Re: Curves Gym

Hi Helski
Yes it is a very friendly environment and everyone is very encouraging. Have been to two different Curves the one in Warwickshire where I go and one in Tavistock when I was staying nearby earlier this year. They are slightly different, my home one having a few more pieces of equipment than the Tavistock one. You go round the circuit twice, depending on size of gym, encouraged all the time by the ladies who are there to help you - lots of chat and laughing from one and all. You are encouraged to go 3 times a week and each visit takes about half and hour. You really need to go and have a look to see if it is for you. I too went to a gym before and just used the swimming pool - not cost effective - but I find curves ok and it has been remarked on that I have lost weight. Not as many lbs as I would like but that is ongoing but finding clothes fitting better and it being noticed is very moral boosting!!
Go on get down to your local Curves and see for yourself.

Re: Curves Gym

Hi. Yes I signed up to Curves about 18 months' ago - but I wish I hadn't. They did not give me any diet advice and I found there opening times useless. They shut at 1pm until 4pm at our local club, which did not fit in with the hours I was working at the time. They opened evenings, but only half day Saturdays. The trouble is you have to sign up for 12 months direct debit payment, and you can't get out of it if you find that you don't like it/you're not losing weight or inches. I lost 4 - 61bs initially, but then no more, despite dieting.
Hope this helps.

Re: Curves Gym

I've just left Curves gym - I was paying £40 a month, but I think it would have been £34 if I had paid for a whole year rather than month on month.

I left for similar reasons to Suja; the opening times just didn't work for me. My club opened at 9am weekdays through to 7.30pm, so unless I was working from home and could go early evening or at lunchtime I couldn't get there. On Saturdays it opened from 10 till 1, which meant if I went on a Saturday morning by the time I got home and had a shower the whole morning was gone. And it didn't open at all on Sundays or Bank Holidays.

I just felt the opening hours meant I wasn't able to go often enough.

I have now rejoined a local 'Cannons' for £64 a month and for that I can use the gym, swim, go to as many classes as I like etc etc. And it's open from early in the morning every day till late evening, and on bank holidays. By the time I have factored in the fact that the parking is free (it cost me about £3.30 a week if I went to Curves 3 times in a week) and that I can use their showers, hot water, hairdryers etc, it's really not much more expensive. And there's a bar and restaurant and other facilities too.

I didn't lose any weight through going to Curves, but although I am slightly overweight I was already quite fit before going there. The ladies who seemed to be successful in losing weight were either very overweight and unfit or were on a diet as well.

The Curves workout is interesting and enjoyable, and I shall miss going, but I think it is most beneficial if part of a wider exercise regime. It is certainly good if you want a gym which is women only, are very unfit or are intimidated by larger gyms. But you are paying the money for one type of exercise only, with no real variety and very restricted opening times (I don't think any Curves open on a Sunday), and I really believe that it is not good value for money; an off peak membership at a bigger gym would probably offer more facilities and be no more expensive.

Hope this helps.
