Good morning girls, its another lovely day here again today yippee!! In the past we used to eat far more veg than we do today, especially potatoes and green veg. During the war years, even with the horrendous stresses of peoples everyday lives, their diet was much healthier because they "dug" for victory and ate lots of potatoes and home grown veg. Veg are an important part of the "5 a day" fruit and veg that we are encouraged to eat everyday for good health. Potatoes however are NOT included as a part of this group. Potatoes are a good source of carbohydrate and are also relatively low in calories, but because they contain carbohydrate, they absorbe fet very easily, so if you fry or roast them in oil their calorie content increaces. The skin on potatoes is a good source of dietry fibre so it is best to cook them with their skins where posible. You can easily make roast potatoes and oven chips from tatties with their skins on; brush them or spray them with a little oil and bake in a hot oven. Small new potatoes and sweet potatoes are an even better option as they have an added benefit of containing the antioxidant beta-carotene. All of the green veg like cabbage, broccoli, sprouts, lettuce, cucumber, coliflower, radishes contain the powerful antioxidants. They are low in carbohydrate and therefore have a negligible effect on your blood sugar levels, so eat large portions of them! I steam all my veg, and never add salt, except to the potatoes if they are being boiled. |

Morning mjm rarely do I eat my 5 a day when at work, habit I am going to try and develop over summer. Went food shopping yesterday and tried to buy rainbow colours, sounds daft but thought it might make me remember. Have got peppers, aubergines, carrots, cabbage and lots of salad stuffs. |

Hi mjm, I love vegetables, but I don't think I eat enough of them. Have a lovely summer cabbage in the fridge though, so will eat that today. Sweet potatoes are delicious mashed with some lemon juice and black pepper - I also sometimes add them to ordinary potatoes for a more interesting flavour. I very rarely add salt to any food when I cook it as my ES had heart problems as a child and we were told he should always have a low salt diet. Once I got used to eating unsalted food, I didn't miss it at all. |

Good Morning Everyone! I love vegetables and most days eat plenty of them (steamed or raw) - I can't really think of a vegetable that I don't like. At home we have a tendency to stick to ordinary potatoes as my OH doesn't like sweet potatoes - I enjoy them, though - baked in the oven or mashed with a bit of seasoning. I like the idea of adding lemon juice, valaber - I haven't had them like that. That reminds me - I want to try and go to Southampton market tomorrow morning as they have a really good veg and fruit stall there. The produce is always very fresh and reasonably priced. Hope you all have a good day. xx |

Good morning lorca and Val, It takes abit of practice and effort to remember to eat the 5 a day, but once you get in to it, its great. When your at work lorca, you could chop up some fruit and veg and put it in little pots like we were discussing a few days ago, its great fun. Val that sounds lovely, I shall try that one. I slice my sweet potatoes thinly and lay them out on a baking sheet and pop them in the oven, give them 10 mins and then turn them over for another 10, and their done. I put them with a salad and sprinkle some cheese on the top so it melts slightly, yumm! Im the same as you Val, I dont add salt to anything, except chips, which I rarely have now. I sometimes think that peole dont realize how much salt is taken in by every day foods, without actually adding more, bread is one culprit. |

Hi girls...well I have to be honest..I am cr*p at eating my 5 a day..except for wine...well it does contain grapes. ![]() Seriously tho I prefer pasta and rice to potatoes although when I do eat potatoes it's either new or jacket so at least they are the healthier option (although slathered with butter is a bit of a downfall ) I am trying to make up my 5 a day with fruit as I really don't like alot of veg. My only veg dish which I really like is peppers, red onion courgettes mushrooms and whole cherry tomatoes tossed in olive oil and garlic with a few herbs and a squezze of fresh lemon and roasted in the oven. Makes a great accompaniment to BBQ food and Jacket potato...Gosh I am hungry now

Sally, that sounds delicious - will be trying that today!! I love most vegetables, salad and fruit - I should be sylphlike but I'm not!! Have discovered risotto and love it!! Home made oven chips with their skins left on - sprayed with a little oil and sprinkled with paprika & cayenne pepper - baked in hot oven until brown & crisp. Serve with a dip made with fat free greek yogurt, minced garlic and chopped chives. Healthy but yummy!!!! Will definitely try the sweet potato recipes. I don't use salt for cooking - haven't done for more than 20 years. Not just hungry - famished now!!!!! Anne xx |

mjm...unfortunately I eat the white pasta and rice...I have tried the brown 'healthy' varieties on several occasions in the past and always felt like I was eating cardboard!!! Anne love the sound of your homemade chips. I was trying to think of something to go with an Omelette and salad tonight...problems solved!!! Thanks |

I know what you mean Sally, I have got the brown stuff in the pantry, but it never gets used, I have great intentions when I buy it tho, but then again, why eat it if you dont like it, that would be braking one of the golden rules and we cant have that can we?? |

I usually manage at least 5 a day but can't stand brown rice and pasta. I never add salt to veg when cooking and if I do use it (in bread or pastry) it's normally sea salt as it's supposed to be healthier than the cheaper rock salt. I'm trying to decide what to cook tonight - I've got courgettes, peppers, carrots, onions and a small amount of lettuce in the fridge (probably some potatoes too). Maybe I'll take a look at the Good Food site in a while. |

hi all I am a salad eater, not that keen on veg. Tell me girls, what do you eat when you go to a supper club meet. Us Essex girls meet regular at least every 2/3weeks, so its really had. I don't want to eat salad when i go out as i have enough of that at home, so what do you choose??? all sugestions gratefully received. Brandyqueen |

brandyq, sometimes I have a starter for a main course and then a pudding, so I dont feel as if I have missed out. You really should be going for what you really want, not what you think you should, so following the golden rules is crucial, eat slowly and enjoy every mouthful and STOP when you feel comfortably full, if you end up feeling stuffed..........then you have blown it!! Thats where the control comes into it. Its eating too much over the years and years that had put most of us where we were 116 days ago! Keep at it, you will get there it just takes a little practice, but its worth it, your worth it!! |

mjm..that's so true. I now do eat what I want but make a concerted effort to enjoy every mouthful. It really works....I feel satisfied much sooner and eat far less than I used to. Also the reverse applies...on the odd occasion when I eat on the run or in front of the telly (an old bad habit) I stuff myself to the point of feeling uncomfortable and if anyone would ask me what the meal tasted like or why I enjoyed it...I wouldn't be able to tell them... The system works, it really does...we just have to be consistent!!! |

As the girls have said, I eat exactly what I want but just eat less of it. Rarely finish a full meal nowadays -unless I'm not concentrating then ooops - all gone. When you are chatting away at a supper club meal, I do find it hard to taste & feel the food properly but because I'm always chatting - I can't eat & talk at the same time. Grateful for small mercies LOL Anne xxx |
