Menopause problems due to having had a hysterectomy!

Hi, has anyone out there had a hysterectomy, where both ovaries are removed and therefore means you fly feet first into the menopause, rather than gradually. I am 10 wks post op, and having the most tremendous hot flushes day and night. The ones at night are the worst as they just envelop you, like someones turned a switch on and turned up the heat and I drip with sweat. They actually wake me up, and I seem to be having them every 2 hours, so not getting a good nights sleep either. Any suggestions, what can help. My doctor has put me on the Beta blocker Propranolol, for the time being, until I have had my first Consultants visit, when I hope I can take some HRT. But if anyone has any self help suggestions I'd be happy to try anything.

Re: Menopause problems due to having had a hysterectomy!

Oh, you poor thing- I really sympathise..

I had the same hysterectomy 15 years ago(I was pretty young then) but have had HRT ever since. First I had an oestrogen implant and then I went on to patches. I keep thinking I should come off them, but my doctors say that I don't have to- and that the HRT risks don't apply so much to people with no ovaries and who are on oestrogen only. The thing is you read conflicting reports almost daily, don't you? I do know tho, that I needed the oestrogen to protect me from osteoporosis, initially. So I have decided to stay on them for the time being...

Anyway. I do hope you get some help soon. How long have you got to wait before going back to the consultant? In the meantime, try going down to your local healthfood store and ask about Black Cohosh, and Red Clover, they are supposed to help the flushes.

Good luck, hope it's soon sorted for you..

Re: Menopause problems due to having had a hysterectomy!

My friend used AGNUS CASTUS and BLACK COHOSH and they helped her but do check with a Chemist in case they aren't suitable for you.HRT will sort it out when you get it so the future is not so bad.

Re: Menopause problems due to having had a hysterectomy!

Hi ExpatK/Decorator, thanks for the suggestions, I go back to the Consultant Aug 20th. My Doctor wouldn't put me on HRT until the Consultant had ok'd it, as I had to have the hysterectomy becos of a Giant Ovarian Cyst 30 cm, which was Borderline. (I'd been mis diagnosed for 2 yrs!)She seemed reluctant to put me on it, incase the Consultant, said "who the hell put you on this, you shouldn't be on it, becos of the risk of cancer". Don't ask!

Re: Menopause problems due to having had a hysterectomy!

Hi

I had a hysterectomy twelve years ago I was lucky I still have both ovaries so the onset on the Menopause was not instant. However when it started some six years back the experience was not pleasant. I am on HRT and do worry about the side effects but despite trying not to take HRT I have to resort to taking it to at least sleep through the night without feeling like my body will explode like a ball of fire!

I can recommend a wonderful book "Women's Bodies Women's Wisdom" It makes you really think about life and the way you feel about yourself...

Also try Red Clover herbal remidy....

Take care

Re: Menopause problems due to having had a hysterectomy!

Had a hysterectomy about 5 years ago due to ovarian cancer. All of my bits were taken out so I was plunged into menopause instantly. Had HRT implants for two years but now I don't use anything excepy evening primrose and a herbal product called "Aria" from most health stores--Boots included. I really feel the difference in terms of "power surges" when I don't take it. It worked for me. Good luck!

Hi Snowy. Just a word about herbal remedies. They will work but you have to give it time - 6 months to a year - where you will very gradually feel better. It worked for me but I am not sure whether it works for everyone. Black cohosh (I have read) can be taken alongside HRT before people stop taking HRT so that they minimise the resurgence of symptoms.

Re: Menopause problems due to having had a hysterectomy!

Forgot to mention, once you do feel better on herbal remedies you don't need to take them any more. Herbal remedies are meant to work slowly and naturally with your body to bring it back to balance, hence the long improvement cycle.

Re: Menopause problems due to having had a hysterectomy!

Hi everyone, just read my last post, and didn't mean to insinuate that HRT would give me cancer, I meant that my Consultant might not agree with my Doctor putting me on HRT becos I had a Borderline ovarian cyst.Actually I'm not sure what I'm trying to say. But thankyou everyone with your suggestions, I will put some of them by my Consultant when I go in August.

Re: Menopause problems due to having had a hysterectomy!

I had a hysterectomy a year ago (everything removed!) and the hot flashes arrived about 2 weeks afterwards and drove me nuts! I can't take HRT so spent ages looking on the internet for herbal solutions. Soya seems to be one of the better ones, which you can get from soya milk (which is horrid, so I put a little nesquik in it!)or capsules from health shops. Black cohosh is supposed to be ok, but can have side effects.I currently take Menopace, which is a multi-vit, with soya in. It has certainly taken the edge off the hot flashes. Mine wake me up and I have spent many a night throwing the duvet off and then grabbing it back 5 minutes later because I'm cold!

Re: Menopause problems due to having had a hysterectomy!

Hi tree. Some time ago an article appeared about black cohosh having detrimental effects on the liver but that was easily disproved. I have read nothing about it since but I can say it helped me and quite a few of my friends a few years ago. I now go through life, at 56 taking no tablets or remedies for anything and long may it last.

Re: Menopause problems due to having had a hysterectomy!

Tell you what girls, if it was men that had to go through the menopause, you can be darn sure that there would be some 'wonder' drug that sorted all the horrible symptoms out pronto! I can't believe that in this day and age they haven't come up with a 'one rememdy suits all' pill...it's a minefield of contradictory advice out there!

Re: Menopause problems due to having had a hysterectomy!

hi issi, that's good to know about black cohosh. I don't know anyone else who's taken it, but I admit the bad press put me off a bit. I will be prepared to give it a go now. Some herbal remedies are supposed to have side effects, but let's face it, so do regular medicines! Just out of interest, how long did you take it for and how quickly did it work?

Re: Menopause problems due to having had a hysterectomy!

Hi everyone, I had a hysterectomy 5 years ago, but without removal of the ovaries, so the menopause has been gradual. I found taking Vitamin B really helped with the hot flushes. It doesn't stop them altogether, but does reduce them considerably.

Does anyone else find they get migraine headaches with the onset of the menopause? Any ideas on how to keep these at bay?

Re: Menopause problems due to having had a hysterectomy!

Hi Snowy - Like you, I had all my "bits" taken out and was plunged into the hell that is the menopause straight away. HRT wasn't suitable for me, so I struggled on for a bit, but couldn't put up with the hot flushes. The doctor gave me Chlonidine which helps with that a good bit, but doesn't stop them altogether. I also use one of those "Ladycare" magnet thingies. Bit of a belt and braces thing!! To be honest, I wish I'd just put up with the heavy periods - my body has gone to pot since I had the hysterectomy!! lol.

Anyway, good luck, hope you get it sorted out!
