I wonder if anybody can explain this: with the years I seem to be eating less and less and , although I have never been slim but sort of "plumpish" (sounds like a fruit !) , I seem to put on more weight, particularly round my stomach ! ![]() Last week I took out a skirt I hadn't worn since last summer and felt it was a bit tight. ![]() Yet I have the impression that I eat less not more ? This may sound silly but I am actually wondering if I eat enough ?? ![]() Does it make sense?? I love fruits and veg so my daily diet is based on those. thanks for your replies and advice.

Sial, it could be your age. I know that most women put weight on, without doing anything different, once their hormones start packing their bags. I had an early menopause and I remember distinctly that at 40 I suddenly weighed more without seemingly doing anything different. If menopause is a possibility then it is worth having a blood test to check and then you can start thinking about managing your body (it comes to us all in the end). |

Hi sial. I can sympathise with you! Only this morning have I been told by my GP when complaining about 'mystery' weight that seems to be piling on around my middle even though like you, I don't think I am eating more, that it is an unfortunate side affect of the menopause and being 50!! Apparently women over 50 have to 'eat like a bird' to maintain their weight....I was so fed up when I came out I took solace in a cake from the cake shop at lunch time, telling myself it would be my last ever cake!!! In the meantime, my husband tucks into platefuls and drinks copious amounts of alcohol and it doesn't matter! I also suffer from low blood sugar and tend to grab bits of biscuits and cake when it dips. I have looked at diets and honestly wouldn't survive on what it tells me to eat without falling over!!! You may not be my age but I have spent most of my life being skinny and now am piling it on...boo hoo!!! |

Hi Sial. I know what you mean. I am exactly the same. It's a real pain. If you eat, you put on weight. If you don't eat, you put on weight. If you merely look at food, you put on weight. I joined a ladies only gym and found that that helped to at least keep the weight static and think it was beginning to tone me up a bit - before it closed down! However the main thing I find helps is to cut out as much carbohydrate as possible and to curb (not stop altogether, we have to spoil ourselves occasionally!) the booze. Definitely helps, occasionally a couple of pounds will go, but I find it keeps things about the same. The problem arises when you have visitors etc. But I just have to think that I would be in an even worse state if I don't try that inbetween times. The menopause does not help. Age does not help. Hormones - who'd have 'em!! |

Thank you ladies for your quick answers! I should have said that I went through the menopause 11 years ago , yes, yes, I don't look it but I'm nearly 60 !So I don't think hormones are an issue. I was raising the question of not eating enough because apparently when you eat less your metabolism slows down , my physical activity is still the same i.e. non existant apart from a fair amount of walking!I am not obese just getting plumper and plumper and I don't know why! ![]() Nearly dinner time and we shall have tomato / tuna salad and to finish off the meal some fromage frais and fruit salad ! How's that for a healthy diet?

Hi All I am fairly new to the forum, couple of weeks. You dont know how pleased I was to read this post. I am 56 and my middle is expanding rapidly. Seems to have happened over the past twelve months or so. Don't eat bickiees and seldom cake, never eat sweets (can't give up choc entirely). Was told today that I probably dont eat enough and bod goes into starvation mode. Think I'll go raid the fridge!!!! |

I read recently that women put on 10lb of fat every 10 years, but lose 5lb of muscle. This seems to make sense, accounts for why clothes get tighter. NO consolation to know that, tho.

Just remembered something. My mother in law is 84 years old and looks a good ten years younger, and is very fit - she can still kick her legs in the air and dance around a room, and she goes out every day. When she was 64 she started going to an exercise class for exactly the reason we are all complaining. She could see her figure was going to pot (literally!). She absolutely hates exercise but for the last 20 years she has rarely missed a session, once a week. Very, very slowly her figure improved and her fitness along with it. She did cut down on her eating but not as much as you would think. She still goes to the same class. I remember it did take a year or two but the benefits were huge and still are. |
